| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Considering the following integer multiplication: u64 = u16 * u16 What on earth, one might wonder, is the problem with this? Well, due to C's unfortunately abstruse integer semantics, both u16's are implicitly converted to int before the multiplication, which cannot hold all possible values of a u16 * u16. Even worse, after overflow the intermediate result will be a negative number, which during the conversion to a u64 will be sign-extended to a huge integer. Not good. The solution is to manually cast one of the u16 to a u32 or u64, which are large enough to not have any overflow and will prevent the implicit conversion. The type of the u64 is preferred, though a u32 is used instead of size_t, since that can change depending on the platform. This is because in the original the line begins with a space. Checkpatch rejects that. Checkpatch also rejects changing the space to a tab because that makes it more than 80 chars. I rejected breaking the line because it makes it even less readable. All the changes forced by checkpatch make the code less readable. Herman Hollerith would be proud. Because of that requirement symbol tables need to be present because the relocations reference the symbols. Additionally, symbol tables reference a string table for the symbol names. Provide the necessary support for adding all of those things to an ELF writer. TEST=Extracted rmodule from a cbfs and compared with the source ELF file. Confirmed relocations and code sizes are correct. A memory leak that used to occur when compressing files with lzma is also found and fixed. Finally, there are several fixes for the Makefile: - Its autodependencies used to be broken because the target for the .dependencies file was misnamed; this meant that Make didn't know how to rebuild the file, and so would silently skip the step of updating it before including it. - The ability to build to a custom output directory by defining the obj variable had bitrotted. - The default value of the obj variable was causing implicit rules not to apply when specifying a file as a target without providing a custom value for obj. - Add a distclean target for removing the .dependencies file. A specific example is the tegra124 which boots on an ARMv4 coprocessor while most code, including most of the firmware, runs on the main ARMv7 core. To support SOCs like this, the plan is to generalize the ARM architecture so that all versions are available, and an SOC/CPU can then select what architecture variant should be used for each component of the firmware; bootblock, romstage, and ramstage. We don't always want to use ARMv7 code when building for ARM, so we should separate out the ARMv7 code so it can be excluded, and also make it possible to include code for some other version of the architecture instead, all per build component for cases where we need more than one architecture version at a time. The tegra124 bootblock will ultimately need to be ARMv4, but until we have some ARMv4 code to switch over to we can leave it set to ARMv7. This completes the improvements to the ELF file parsing code. We can now parse section headers too, across all 4 combinations of word size and endianness. I had hoped to completely remove the use of htonl until I found it in cbfs_image.c. That's a battle for another day. There's now a handy macro to create magic numbers in host byte order. I'm using it for all the PAYLOAD_SEGMENT_* constants and maybe we can use it for the others too, but this is sensitive code and I'd rather change one thing at a time. To maximize the ease of use for users, elf parsing is accomplished with just one function: int elf_headers(const struct buffer *pinput, Elf64_Ehdr *ehdr, Elf64_Phdr **pphdr, Elf64_Shdr **pshdr) which requires the ehdr and pphdr pointers to be non-NULL, but allows the pshdr to be NULL. If pshdr is NULL, the code will not try to read in section headers. To satisfy our powerful scripts, I had to remove the ^M from an unrelated microcode file. BUG=None TEST=Build a peppy image (known to boot) with old and new versions and verify they are bit-for-bit the same.
