| * Docs/mm/damon/faq: remove old questionsSeongJae Park2023-06-091-23/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Patch series "Docs/mm/damon: Minor fixes and design doc update". Some of the DAMON documents are outdated, or having minor typos or grammar erros. Especially, the design doc has not updated for DAMOS, which is an important part of DAMON. Fix the minor issues and update documents. This patch (of 10): The first two questions of DAMON faqs have raised when DAMON patches were first submitted. More than one year has passed since DAMON patches get merged in the mainline, and that kind of questions are not asked nowadays. Remove the questions. | * | Documentation/mm: Initial page table documentationLinus Walleij2023-06-161-0/+149
| |/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This is based on an earlier blog post at people.kernel.org, it describes the concepts about page tables that were hardest for me to grasp when dealing with them for the first time, such as the prevalent three-letter acronyms pfn, pgd, p4d, pud, pmd and pte. I don't know if this is what people want, but it's what I would have wanted. The wording, introduction, choice of initial subjects and choice of style is mine. I discussed at one point with Mike Rapoport to bring this into the kernel documentation, so here is a small proposal. The current form is augmented in response to feedback from Mike Rapoport, Matthew Wilcox, Jonathan Cameron, Kuan-Ying Lee, Randy Dunlap and Bagas Sanjaya. * / mm: page_table_check: Make it dependent on EXCLUSIVE_SYSTEM_RAMRuihan Li2023-05-291-0/+19
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Without EXCLUSIVE_SYSTEM_RAM, users are allowed to map arbitrary physical memory regions into the userspace via /dev/mem. At the same time, pages may change their properties (e.g., from anonymous pages to named pages) while they are still being mapped in the userspace, leading to "corruption" detected by the page table check. To avoid these false positives, this patch makes PAGE_TABLE_CHECK depends on EXCLUSIVE_SYSTEM_RAM. This dependency is understandable because PAGE_TABLE_CHECK is a hardening technique but /dev/mem without STRICT_DEVMEM (i.e., !EXCLUSIVE_SYSTEM_RAM) is itself a security problem. Even with EXCLUSIVE_SYSTEM_RAM, I/O pages may be still allowed to be mapped via /dev/mem. However, these pages are always considered as named pages, so they won't break the logic used in the page table check. | * | shmem: add support to ignore swapLuis Chamberlain2023-03-281-0/+2

One of the *raves* about brd over shmem is you can avoid swap, but that's not really a good reason to use brd if we can instead use shmem. Using brd has its own good reasons to exist, but just because "tmpfs" doesn't let you do that is not a great reason to avoid it if we can easily add support for it. I don't add support for reconfiguring incompatible options, but if we really wanted to we can add support for that. To avoid swap we use mapping_set_unevictable() upon inode creation, and put a WARN_ON_ONCE() stop-gap on writepages() for reclaim. | * mm: discard __GFP_ATOMICNeilBrown2023-02-021-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | __GFP_ATOMIC serves little purpose. Its main effect is to set ALLOC_HARDER which adds a few little boosts to increase the chance of an allocation succeeding, one of which is to lower the water-mark at which it will succeed. It is *always* paired with __GFP_HIGH which sets ALLOC_HIGH which also adjusts this watermark. It is probable that other users of __GFP_HIGH should benefit from the other little bonuses that __GFP_ATOMIC gets. __GFP_ATOMIC also gives a warning if used with __GFP_DIRECT_RECLAIM. There is little point to this. We already get a might_sleep() warning if __GFP_DIRECT_RECLAIM is set. __GFP_ATOMIC allows the "watermark_boost" to be side-stepped. It is probable that testing ALLOC_HARDER is a better fit here. __GFP_ATOMIC is used by tegra-smmu.c to check if the allocation might sleep. This should test __GFP_DIRECT_RECLAIM instead. This patch: - removes __GFP_ATOMIC - allows __GFP_HIGH allocations to ignore watermark boosting as well as GFP_ATOMIC requests. - makes other adjustments as suggested by the above. The net result is not change to GFP_ATOMIC allocations. Other allocations that use __GFP_HIGH will benefit from a few different extra privileges. This affects: xen, dm, md, ntfs3 the vermillion frame buffer hibernation ksm swap all of which likely produce more benefit than cost if these selected allocation are more likely to succeed quickly. | * mm/highmem: add notes about conversions from kmap{,_atomic}()Fabio M. De Francesco2023-02-021-10/+31
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | kmap() and kmap_atomic() have been deprecated. kmap_local_page() should always be used in new code and the call sites of the two deprecated functions should be converted. This latter task can lead to errors if it is not carried out with the necessary attention to the context around and between the maps and unmaps. Therefore, add further information to the Highmem's documentation for the purpose to make it clearer that (1) kmap() and kmap_atomic() must not any longer be called in new code and (2) developers doing conversions from kmap() amd kmap_atomic() are expected to take care of the context around and between the maps and unmaps, in order to not break the code.
