This also means that the strings are always NUL-terminated by the common code, making the API a little bit safer. As most handler just pass through the data to one of the common handlers a lot of the changes are mechnical. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | It turned out that fake numa support is rather useless on s390, since there are no scenarios where there is any performance or other benefit when used. However it does provide maintenance cost and breaks from time to time. Therefore remove it. CONFIG_NUMA is still supported with a very small backend and only one node. This way userspace applications which require NUMA interfaces continue to work. Note that NODES_SHIFT is set to 1 (= 2 nodes) instead of 0 (= 1 node), since there is quite a bit of kernel code which assumes that more than one node is possible if CONFIG_NUMA is enabled. This function uses the extra1 and extra2 members from struct ctl_table as minimum and maximum allowed value. On sysctl handler declaration, in every source file there are some readonly variables containing just an integer which address is assigned to the extra1 and extra2 members, so the sysctl range is enforced. The special values 0, 1 and INT_MAX are very often used as range boundary, leading duplication of variables like zero=0, one=1, int_max=INT_MAX in different source files: $ git grep -E '\.extra[12].*&(zero|one|int_max)' |wc -l 248 Add a const int array containing the most commonly used values, some macros to refer more easily to the correct array member, and use them instead of creating a local one for every object file. Historically this used to be the best option for (virtual) machines in overcommited hypervisors. For some workloads however it is better to generate a different topology where all cpus are siblings within a package (all cpus are core siblings). This shows performance improvements of up to 10%, depending on the workload. In order to keep the current behaviour, but also allow to switch to the different core sibling topology use the existing "topology=" kernel parameter: Specifying "topology=on" on machines without topology information will generate the core siblings (fake) topology information, instead of the default topology information where all cpus have the maximum distance. On machines which provide topology information specifying "topology=on" does not have any effect. If a level is not supported, or no data is available, user space can recognize this with a -EINVAL error code when trying to read such data. With the facility enabled each core will surface multiple hardware threads to the system. Each hardware threads looks like a normal CPU to the operating system with all its registers and properties. The SCLP interface reports the SMT topology indirectly via the maximum thread id. Each reported CPU in the result of a read-scp-information is a core representing a number of hardware threads. To reflect the reduced CPU capacity if two hardware threads run on a single core the MT utilization counter set is used to normalize the raw cputime obtained by the CPU timer deltas. This scaled cputime is reported via the taskstats interface. The normal /proc/stat numbers are based on the raw cputime and are not affected by the normalization. Also fix the broken core vs socket variable naming and simplify the locking a bit. When running in environments without topology information also invent book, socket and core ids, so that not all ids are zero.
