There remains work to do on nds32, arc, unicore32, powerpc, arm, arm64, ia64 and x86 to get the code that generates siginfo into a simpler and more maintainable state. Most of that work involves refactoring the signal handling code and thus careful code review. Also not included is the work to shrink the in kernel version of struct siginfo. That depends on getting the number of places that directly manipulate struct siginfo under control, as it requires the introduction of struct kernel_siginfo for the in kernel things. Overall this set of changes looks like it is making good progress, and with a little luck I will be wrapping up the siginfo work next development cycle" * 'siginfo-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace: (46 commits) signal/sh: Stop gcc warning about an impossible case in do_divide_error signal/mips: Report FPE_FLTUNK for undiagnosed floating point exceptions signal/um: More carefully relay signals in relay_signal. signal: Extend siginfo_layout with SIL_FAULT_{MCEERR|BNDERR|PKUERR} signal: Remove unncessary #ifdef SEGV_PKUERR in 32bit compat code signal/signalfd: Add support for SIGSYS signal/signalfd: Remove __put_user from signalfd_copyinfo signal/xtensa: Use force_sig_fault where appropriate signal/xtensa: Consistenly use SIGBUS in do_unaligned_user signal/um: Use force_sig_fault where appropriate signal/sparc: Use force_sig_fault where appropriate signal/sparc: Use send_sig_fault where appropriate signal/sh: Use force_sig_fault where appropriate signal/s390: Use force_sig_fault where appropriate signal/riscv: Replace do_trap_siginfo with force_sig_fault signal/riscv: Use force_sig_fault where appropriate signal/parisc: Use force_sig_fault where appropriate signal/parisc: Use force_sig_mceerr where appropriate signal/openrisc: Use force_sig_fault where appropriate signal/nios2: Use force_sig_fault where appropriate ...
| * signal: Ensure every siginfo we send has all bits initializedEric W. Biederman2018-04-251-0/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Call clear_siginfo to ensure every stack allocated siginfo is properly initialized before being passed to the signal sending functions. Note: It is not safe to depend on C initializers to initialize struct siginfo on the stack because C is allowed to skip holes when initializing a structure. The initialization of struct siginfo in tracehook_report_syscall_exit was moved from the helper user_single_step_siginfo into tracehook_report_syscall_exit itself, to make it clear that the local variable siginfo gets fully initialized. In a few cases the scope of struct siginfo has been reduced to make it clear that siginfo siginfo is not used on other paths in the function in which it is declared. Instances of using memset to initialize siginfo have been replaced with calls clear_siginfo for clarity. Signed-off-by: "Eric W. Biederman" <ebiederm@xmission.com>

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This way we have one central definition of it, and user can select it as needed. The new option is not user visible, which is the behavior it had in most architectures, with a few notable exceptions: - On x86_64 and mips/loongson3 it used to be user selectable, but defaulted to y. It now is unconditional, which seems like the right thing for 64-bit architectures without guaranteed availablity of IOMMUs. - on powerpc the symbol is user selectable and defaults to n, but many boards select it. This change assumes no working setup required a manual selection, but if that turned out to be wrong we'll have to add another select statement or two for the respective boards. * mm: fix races between swapoff and flush dcacheHuang Ying2018-04-052-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Thanks to commit 4b3ef9daa4fc ("mm/swap: split swap cache into 64MB trunks"), after swapoff the address_space associated with the swap device will be freed. So page_mapping() users which may touch the address_space need some kind of mechanism to prevent the address_space from being freed during accessing. The dcache flushing functions (flush_dcache_page(), etc) in architecture specific code may access the address_space of swap device for anonymous pages in swap cache via page_mapping() function. But in some cases there are no mechanisms to prevent the swap device from being swapoff, for example, CPU1 CPU2 __get_user_pages() swapoff() flush_dcache_page() mapping = page_mapping() ... exit_swap_address_space() ... kvfree(spaces) mapping_mapped(mapping) The address space may be accessed after being freed. But from cachetlb.txt and Russell King, flush_dcache_page() only care about file cache pages, for anonymous pages, flush_anon_page() should be used. The implementation of flush_dcache_page() in all architectures follows this too. They will check whether page_mapping() is NULL and whether mapping_mapped() is true to determine whether to flush the dcache immediately. And they will use interval tree (mapping->i_mmap) to find all user space mappings. While mapping_mapped() and mapping->i_mmap isn't used by anonymous pages in swap cache at all. So, to fix the race between swapoff and flush dcache, __page_mapping() is add to return the address_space for file cache pages and NULL otherwise. All page_mapping() invoking in flush dcache functions are replaced with page_mapping_file(). * | License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman2017-11-022-0/+2
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. Thus the pointer can point to const data. However the attributes do not have to be a bitfield. Instead unsigned long will do fine: 1. This is just simpler. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | There are few things about *pte_alloc*() helpers worth cleaning up: - 'vma' argument is unused, let's drop it; - most __pte_alloc() callers do speculative check for pmd_none(), before taking ptl: let's introduce pte_alloc() macro which does the check. The only direct user of __pte_alloc left is userfaultfd, which has different expectation about atomicity wrt pmd. - pte_alloc_map() and pte_alloc_map_lock() are redefined using pte_alloc(). | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | the handler Introduce faulthandler_disabled() and use it to check for irq context and disabled pagefaults (via pagefault_disable()) in the pagefault handlers. Please note that we keep the in_atomic() checks in place - to detect whether in irq context (in which case preemption is always properly disabled). In contrast, preempt_disable() should never be used to disable pagefaults. With !CONFIG_PREEMPT_COUNT, preempt_disable() doesn't modify the preempt counter, and therefore the result of in_atomic() differs. We validate that condition by using might_fault() checks when calling might_sleep(). Therefore, add a comment to faulthandler_disabled(), describing why this is needed. faulthandler_disabled() and pagefault_disable() are defined in linux/uaccess.h, so let's properly add that include to all relevant files. * mm: fix false-positive warning on exit due mm_nr_pmds(mm)Kirill A. Shutemov2015-02-111-0/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The problem is that we check nr_ptes/nr_pmds in exit_mmap() which happens *before* pgd_free(). And if an arch does pte/pmd allocation in pgd_alloc() and frees them in pgd_free() we see offset in counters by the time of the checks. We tried to workaround this by offsetting expected counter value according to FIRST_USER_ADDRESS for both nr_pte and nr_pmd in exit_mmap(). But it doesn't work in some cases: 1. ARM with LPAE enabled also has non-zero USER_PGTABLES_CEILING, but upper addresses occupied with huge pmd entries, so the trick with offsetting expected counter value will get really ugly: we will have to apply it nr_pmds, but not nr_ptes. 2. Metag has non-zero FIRST_USER_ADDRESS, but doesn't do allocation pte/pmd page tables allocation in pgd_alloc(), just setup a pgd entry which is allocated at boot and shared accross all processes. The proposal is to move the check to check_mm() which happens *after* pgd_free() and do proper accounting during pgd_alloc() and pgd_free() which would bring counters to zero if nothing leaked. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Commit 4b59e6c47309 ("mm, show_mem: suppress page counts in non-blockable contexts") introduced SHOW_MEM_FILTER_PAGE_COUNT to suppress PFN walks on large memory machines. Commit c78e93630d15 ("mm: do not walk all of system memory during show_mem") avoided a PFN walk in the generic show_mem helper which removes the requirement for SHOW_MEM_FILTER_PAGE_COUNT in that case. This patch removes PFN walkers from the arch-specific implementations that report on a per-node or per-zone granularity. ARM and unicore32 still do a PFN walk as they report memory usage on each bank which is a much finer granularity where the debugging information may still be of use. As the remaining arches doing PFN walks have relatively small amounts of memory, this patch simply removes SHOW_MEM_FILTER_PAGE_COUNT. * mm, vmalloc: change iterating a vmlist to find_vm_area()Joonsoo Kim2013-04-291-12/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patchset removes vm_struct list management after initializing vmalloc. Adding and removing an entry to vmlist is linear time complexity, so it is inefficient. If we maintain this list, overall time complexity of adding and removing area to vmalloc space is O(N), although we use rbtree for finding vacant place and it's time complexity is just O(logN). And vmlist and vmlist_lock is used many places of outside of vmalloc.c. It is preferable that we hide this raw data structure and provide well-defined function for supporting them, because it makes that they cannot mistake when manipulating theses structure and it makes us easily maintain vmalloc layer. For kexec and makedumpfile, I export vmap_area_list, instead of vmlist. This comes from Atsushi's recommendation. For more information, please refer below link. https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/12/6/184 This patch: The purpose of iterating a vmlist is finding vm area with specific virtual address. find_vm_area() is provided for this purpose and more efficient, because it uses a rbtree. In non-blockable contexts, the page allocator will emit a page allocation failure warning unless __GFP_NOWARN is specified. In such contexts, irqs are typically disabled and such a lengthy delay may even result in NMI watchdog timeouts. To fix this, suppress the page walk in such contexts when printing the page allocation failure warning. * unicore32/mm/fault.c: Port OOM changes to do_pfKautuk Consul2012-11-091-10/+27
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Commit d065bd810b6deb67d4897a14bfe21f8eb526ba99 (mm: retry page fault when blocking on disk transfer) and commit 37b23e0525d393d48a7d59f870b3bc061a30ccdb (x86,mm: make pagefault killable) The above commits introduced changes into the x86 pagefault handler for making the page fault handler retryable as well as killable. These changes reduce the mmap_sem hold time, which is crucial during OOM killer invocation. Port these changes to unicore32. There exist more than one function for allocating and freeing the buffers: currently these 3 are used dma_{alloc, free}_coherent, dma_{alloc,free}_writecombine, dma_{alloc,free}_noncoherent. For most of the systems these calls are almost equivalent and can be interchanged. For others, especially the truly non-coherent ones (like ARM), the difference can be easily noticed in overall driver performance. Sadly not all architectures provide implementations for all of them, so the drivers might need to be adapted and cannot be easily shared between different architectures. The provided patches unify all these functions and hide the differences under the already existing dma attributes concept. The thread with more references is available here: http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-sh/msg09777.html These patches are also a prerequisite for unifying DMA-mapping implementation on ARM architecture with the common one provided by dma_map_ops structure and extending it with IOMMU support. More information is available in the following thread: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel.cross-arch/12819 More works on dma-mapping framework are planned, especially in the area of buffer sharing and managing the shared mappings (together with the recently introduced dma_buf interface: commit d15bd7ee445d "dma-buf: Introduce dma buffer sharing mechanism"). The patches in the current set introduce a new alloc/free methods (with support for memory attributes) in dma_map_ops structure, which will later replace dma_alloc_coherent and dma_alloc_writecombine functions." People finally started piping up with support for merging this, so I'm merging it as the last of the pending stuff from the merge window. Looks like pohmelfs is going to wait for 3.5 and more external support for merging. * 'for-linus' of git://git.linaro.org/people/mszyprowski/linux-dma-mapping: common: DMA-mapping: add NON-CONSISTENT attribute common: DMA-mapping: add WRITE_COMBINE attribute common: dma-mapping: introduce mmap method common: dma-mapping: remove old alloc_coherent and free_coherent methods Hexagon: adapt for dma_map_ops changes Unicore32: adapt for dma_map_ops changes Microblaze: adapt for dma_map_ops changes SH: adapt for dma_map_ops changes Alpha: adapt for dma_map_ops changes SPARC: adapt for dma_map_ops changes PowerPC: adapt for dma_map_ops changes MIPS: adapt for dma_map_ops changes X86 & IA64: adapt for dma_map_ops changes common: dma-mapping: introduce generic alloc() and free() methods

* memblock: s/memblock_analyze()/memblock_allow_resize()/ and update usersTejun Heo2011-12-081-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The only function of memblock_analyze() is now allowing resize of memblock region arrays. Rename it to memblock_allow_resize() and update its users. * The following users remain the same other than renaming. arm/mm/init.c::arm_memblock_init() microblaze/kernel/prom.c::early_init_devtree() powerpc/kernel/prom.c::early_init_devtree() openrisc/kernel/prom.c::early_init_devtree() sh/mm/init.c::paging_init() sparc/mm/init_64.c::paging_init() unicore32/mm/init.c::uc32_memblock_init() * In the following users, analyze was used to update total size which is no longer necessary. powerpc/kernel/machine_kexec.c::reserve_crashkernel() powerpc/kernel/prom.c::early_init_devtree() powerpc/mm/init_32.c::MMU_init() powerpc/mm/tlb_nohash.c::__early_init_mmu() powerpc/platforms/ps3/mm.c::ps3_mm_add_memory() powerpc/platforms/embedded6xx/wii.c::wii_memory_fixups() sh/kernel/machine_kexec.c::reserve_crashkernel() * x86/kernel/e820.c::memblock_x86_fill() was directly setting memblock_can_resize before populating memblock and calling analyze afterwards. * memblock: Kill memblock_init()Tejun Heo2011-12-081-1/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | memblock_init() initializes arrays for regions and memblock itself; however, all these can be done with struct initializers and memblock_init() can be removed. This patch kills memblock_init() and initializes memblock with struct initializer. The only difference is that the first dummy entries don't have .nid set to MAX_NUMNODES initially. This doesn't cause any behavior difference. * memblock: Fix include breakages caused by 24aa07882bTejun Heo2011-12-082-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 24aa07882b (memblock, x86: Replace memblock_x86_reserve/free_range() with generic ones) removed arch/x86/include/asm/memblock.h and dropped its inclusion from include/linux/memblock.h which breaks other architectures which depended on the generic memblock.h pulling in the arch specific one. However, the proper fix isn't adding back the asm inclusion. memblock doesn't have any arch dependent part and doesn't need arch specific header file and asm/memblock.h files are either practically empty or contain mostly unrelated arch specific stuff. * In microblaze, sh, powerpc, sparc and openrisc, asm/memblock.h is either empty or just contains unused MEMBLOCK_DBG() macro. Remove them. * In arm and unicore32, asm/memblock.h contains arch specific stuff. Include it directly from its users. It might be a good idea to rename the header file to avoid confusion. * arch, mm: filter disallowed nodes from arch specific show_mem functionsDavid Rientjes2011-05-251-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Architectures that implement their own show_mem() function did not pass the filter argument to show_free_areas() to appropriately avoid emitting the state of nodes that are disallowed in the current context. This patch now passes the filter argument to show_free_areas() so those nodes are now avoided. This patch also removes the show_free_areas() wrapper around __show_free_areas() and converts existing callers to pass an empty filter. ia64 emits additional information for each node, so skip_free_areas_zone() must be made global to filter disallowed nodes and it is converted to use a nid argument rather than a zone for this use case.
