* libata-sff: ata_sff_[dumb_]qc_prep are BMDMA specificTejun Heo2010-05-191-3/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | Both qc_prep functions deal only with BMDMA PRD setup and PIO only SFF drivers don't need them. Rename to ata_bmdma_[dumb_]qc_prep() and relocate. All usages are renamed except for pdc_adma and sata_qstor. Those two drivers are not BMDMA drivers and don't need to call BMDMA qc_prep functions. Calls to ata_sff_qc_prep() in the two drivers are removed. Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <tj@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Jeff Garzik <jgarzik@redhat.com>
* libata-sff: clean up BMDMA initializationTejun Heo2010-05-191-4/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When BMDMA initialization failed or BMDMA was not available for whatever reason, bmdma_addr was left at zero and used as an indication that BMDMA shouldn't be used. This leads to the following problems. p1. For BMDMA drivers which don't use traditional BMDMA register, ata_bmdma_mode_filter() incorrectly inhibits DMA modes. Those drivers either have to inherit from ata_sff_port_ops or clear ->mode_filter explicitly. p2. non-BMDMA drivers call into BMDMA PRD table allocation. It doesn't actually allocate PRD table if bmdma_addr is not initialized but is still confusing. p3. For BMDMA drivers which don't use traditional BMDMA register, some methods might not be invoked as expected (e.g. bmdma_stop from ata_sff_post_internal_cmd()). p4. SFF drivers w/ custom DMA interface implement noop BMDMA ops worrying libata core might call into one of them. These problems are caused by the muddy line between SFF and BMDMA and the assumption that all BMDMA controllers initialize bmdma_addr. This patch fixes p1 and p2 by removing the bmdma_addr assumption and moving prd allocation to BMDMA port start. Later patches will fix the remaining issues. This patch improves BMDMA initialization such that * When BMDMA register initialization fails, falls back to PIO instead of failing. ata_pci_bmdma_init() never fails now. * When ata_pci_bmdma_init() falls back to PIO, it clears ap->mwdma_mask and udma_mask instead of depending on ata_bmdma_mode_filter(). This makes ata_bmdma_mode_filter() unnecessary thus resolving p1. * ata_port_start() which actually is BMDMA specific is moved to ata_bmdma_port_start(). ata_port_start() and ata_sff_port_start() are killed. * ata_sff_port_start32() is moved and renamed to ata_bmdma_port_start32(). Drivers which no longer call into PRD table allocation are... pdc_adma, sata_inic162x, sata_qstor, sata_sx4, pata_cmd640 and all drivers which inherit from ata_sff_port_ops. pata_icside sets ->port_start to ATA_OP_NULL as it doesn't need PRD but is a BMDMA controller and doesn't have custom port_start like other such controllers. Note that with the previous patch which makes all and only BMDMA drivers inherit from ata_bmdma_port_ops, this change doesn't break drivers which need PRD table. * libata: kill ATA_FLAG_DISABLEDTejun Heo2010-05-171-36/+30
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | ATA_FLAG_DISABLED is only used by drivers which don't use ->error_handler framework and is largely broken. Its only meaningful function is to make irq handlers skip processing if the flag is set, which is largely useless and even harmful as it makes those ports more likely to cause IRQ storms. Kill ATA_FLAG_DISABLED and makes the callers disable attached devices instead. ata_port_probe() and ata_port_disable() which manipulate the flag are also killed. This simplifies condition check in IRQ handlers. While updating IRQ handlers, remove ap NULL check as libata guarantees consecutive port allocation (unoccupied ports are initialized with dummies) and long-obsolete ATA_QCFLAG_ACTIVE check (checked by ata_qc_from_tag()). * include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo2010-03-301-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. * libata: rename SFF functionsTejun Heo2008-04-171-6/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | SFF functions have confusing names. Some have sff prefix, some have bmdma, some std, some pci and some none. Unify the naming by... * SFF functions which are common to both BMDMA and non-BMDMA are prefixed with ata_sff_. * SFF functions which are specific to BMDMA are prefixed with ata_bmdma_. * SFF functions which are specific to PCI but apply to both BMDMA and non-BMDMA are prefixed with ata_pci_sff_. * SFF functions which are specific to PCI and BMDMA are prefixed with ata_pci_bmdma_. * Drop generic prefixes from LLD specific routines. For example, bfin_std_dev_select -> bfin_dev_select. The following renames are noteworthy. ata_qc_issue_prot() -> ata_sff_qc_issue() ata_pci_default_filter() -> ata_bmdma_mode_filter() ata_dev_try_classify() -> ata_sff_dev_classify() This rename is in preparation of separating SFF support out of libata core layer. This patch strictly renames functions and doesn't introduce any behavior difference. Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <htejun@gmail.com>

* libata/pdc_adma: make SFF EH handle non-bmdma SFF drivers and standardize ↵Tejun Heo2008-04-171-14/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | pdc_adma ops pdc_adma has interface similar to SFF but has its own DMA interface. It currently implements noop bmdma ops to avoid crashing ata_bmdma_error_handler() which BTW actually is EH for SFF drivers. This patch makes ata_bmdma_error_handler() dereference bmdma ops iff bmdma_addr is initialized as done in ata_bmdma_post_internal_cmd. This change allows pdc_adma to standardize ops and use SFF error_handler and post_internal_cmd. * libata: make reset related methods proper port operationsTejun Heo2008-04-171-8/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently reset methods are not specified directly in the ata_port_operations table. If a LLD wants to use custom reset methods, it should construct and use a error_handler which uses those reset methods. It's done this way for two reasons. First, the ops table already contained too many methods and adding four more of them would noticeably increase the amount of necessary boilerplate code all over low level drivers. Second, as ->error_handler uses those reset methods, it can get confusing. ie. By overriding ->error_handler, those reset ops can be made useless making layering a bit hazy. Now that ops table uses inheritance, the first problem doesn't exist anymore. The second isn't completely solved but is relieved by providing default values - most drivers can just override what it has implemented and don't have to concern itself about higher level callbacks. In fact, there currently is no driver which actually modifies error handling behavior. Drivers which override ->error_handler just wraps the standard error handler only to prepare the controller for EH. I don't think making ops layering strict has any noticeable benefit. This patch makes ->prereset, ->softreset, ->hardreset, ->postreset and their PMP counterparts propoer ops. Default ops are provided in the base ops tables and drivers are converted to override individual reset methods instead of creating custom error_handler. * ata_std_error_handler() doesn't use sata_std_hardreset() if SCRs aren't accessible. sata_promise doesn't need to use separate error_handlers for PATA and SATA anymore. * softreset is broken for sata_inic162x and sata_sx4. As libata now always prefers hardreset, this doesn't really matter but the ops are forced to NULL using ATA_OP_NULL for documentation purpose. * pata_hpt374 needs to use different prereset for the first and second PCI functions. This used to be done by branching from hpt374_error_handler(). The proper way to do this is to use separate ops and port_info tables for each function. Converted. * libata: implement and use ops inheritanceTejun Heo2008-04-171-8/+11
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | libata lets low level drivers build ata_port_operations table and register it with libata core layer. This allows low level drivers high level of flexibility but also burdens them with lots of boilerplate entries. This becomes worse for drivers which support related similar controllers which differ slightly. They share most of the operations except for a few. However, the driver still needs to list all operations for each variant. This results in large number of duplicate entries, which is not only inefficient but also error-prone as it becomes very difficult to tell what the actual differences are. This duplicate boilerplates all over the low level drivers also make updating the core layer exteremely difficult and error-prone. When compounded with multi-branched development model, it ends up accumulating inconsistencies over time. Some of those inconsistencies cause immediate problems and fixed. Others just remain there dormant making maintenance increasingly difficult. To rectify the problem, this patch implements ata_port_operations inheritance. To allow LLDs to easily re-use their own ops tables overriding only specific methods, this patch implements poor man's class inheritance. An ops table has ->inherits field which can be set to any ops table as long as it doesn't create a loop. When the host is started, the inheritance chain is followed and any operation which isn't specified is taken from the nearest ancestor which has it specified. This operation is called finalization and done only once per an ops table and the LLD doesn't have to do anything special about it other than making the ops table non-const such that libata can update it. libata provides four base ops tables lower drivers can inherit from - base, sata, pmp, sff and bmdma. To avoid overriding these ops accidentaly, these ops are declared const and LLDs should always inherit these instead of using them directly. After finalization, all the ops table are identical before and after the patch except for setting .irq_handler to ata_interrupt in drivers which didn't use to. The .irq_handler doesn't have any actual effect and the field will soon be removed by later patch. * sata_sx4 is still using old style EH and currently doesn't take advantage of ops inheritance. * libata: implement and use SHT initializersTejun Heo2008-04-171-13/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | libata lets low level drivers build scsi_host_template and register it to the SCSI layer. This allows low level drivers high level of flexibility but also burdens them with lots of boilerplate entries. This patch implements SHT initializers which can be used to initialize all the boilerplate entries in a sht. Three variants of them are implemented - BASE, BMDMA and NCQ - for different types of drivers. Note that entries can be overriden by putting individual initializers after the helper macro. All sht tables are identical before and after this patch. Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <htejun@gmail.com>
* libata: implement and use ata_noop_irq_clear()Tejun Heo2008-04-171-7/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | ->irq_clear() is used to clear IRQ bit of a SFF controller and isn't useful for drivers which don't use libata SFF HSM implementation. However, it's a required callback and many drivers implement their own noop version as placeholder. This patch implements ata_noop_irq_clear and use it to replace those custom placeholders. Also, SFF drivers which don't support BMDMA don't need to use ata_bmdma_irq_clear(). It becomes noop if BMDMA address isn't initialized. Convert them to use ata_noop_irq_clear(). * libata: convert to chained sgTejun Heo2008-01-231-1/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | libata used private sg iterator to handle padding sg. Now that sg can be chained, padding can be handled using standard sg ops. Convert to chained sg. * s/qc->__sg/qc->sg/ * s/qc->pad_sgent/qc->extra_sg[]/. Because chaining consumes one sg entry. There need to be two extra sg entries. The renaming is also for future addition of other extra sg entries. * Padding setup is moved into ata_sg_setup_extra() which is organized in a way that future addition of other extra sg entries is easy. * qc->orig_n_elem is unused and removed. * qc->n_elem now contains the number of sg entries that LLDs should map. qc->mapped_n_elem is added to carry the original number of mapped sgs for unmapping. * The last sg of the original sg list is used to chain to extra sg list. The original last sg is pointed to by qc->last_sg and the content is stored in qc->saved_last_sg. It's restored during ata_sg_clean(). * All sg walking code has been updated. Unnecessary assertions and checks for conditions the core layer already guarantees are removed. * [libata] kill ata_sg_is_last()Jeff Garzik2007-10-181-3/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Short term, this works around a bug introduced by early sg-chaining work. Long term, removing this function eliminates a branch from a hot path loop in each scatter/gather table build. Also, as this code demonstrates, we don't need to _track_ the end of the s/g list, as long as we mark it in some way. And doing so programatically is nice. So its a useful cleanup, regardless of its short term effects. Based conceptually on a quick patch by Jens Axboe. Signed-off-by: Jeff Garzik <jgarzik@redhat.com>
* libata: implement and use ata_port_desc() to report port configurationTejun Heo2007-10-121-3/+10
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently, port configuration reporting has the following problems. * iomapped address is reported instead of raw address * report contains irrelevant fields or lacks necessary fields for non-SFF controllers. * host->irq/irq2 are there just for reporting and hacky. This patch implements and uses ata_port_desc() and ata_port_pbar_desc(). ata_port_desc() is almost identical to ata_ehi_push_desc() except that it takes @ap instead of @ehi, has no locking requirement, can only be used during host initialization and " " is used as separator instead of ", ". ata_port_pbar_desc() is a helper to ease reporting of a PCI BAR or an offsetted address into it. LLD pushes whatever description it wants using the above two functions. The accumulated description is printed on host registration after "[S/P]ATA max MAX_XFERMODE ". SFF init helpers and ata_host_activate() automatically add descriptions for addresses and irq respectively, so only LLDs which isn't standard SFF need to add custom descriptions. In many cases, such controllers need to report different things anyway. Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <htejun@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Jeff Garzik <jeff@garzik.org>

* libata-link: introduce ata_linkTejun Heo2007-10-121-4/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Introduce ata_link. It abstracts PHY and sits between ata_port and ata_device. This new level of abstraction is necessary to support SATA Port Multiplier, which basically adds a bunch of links (PHYs) to a ATA host port. Fields related to command execution, spd_limit and EH are per-link and thus moved to ata_link. This patch only defines the host link. Multiple link handling will be added later. Also, a lot of ap->link derefences are added but many of them will be removed as each part is converted to deal directly with ata_link instead of ata_port. This patch introduces no behavior change. * libata: s/ap->id/ap->print_id/gTejun Heo2007-02-211-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | ata_port has two different id fields - id and port_no. id is system-wide 1-based unique id for the port while port_no is 0-based host-wide port number. The former is primarily used to identify the ATA port to the user in printk messages while the latter is used in various places in libata core and LLDs to index the port inside the host. The two fields feel quite similar and sometimes ap->id is used in place of ap->port_no, which is very difficult to spot. This patch renames ap->id to ap->print_id to reduce the possibility of such bugs. Some printk messages are adjusted such that id string (ata%u[.%u]) isn't printed twice and/or to use ata_*_printk() instead of hardcoded id format. * [PATCH] remove many unneeded #includes of sched.hTim Schmielau2007-02-141-1/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | After Al Viro (finally) succeeded in removing the sched.h #include in module.h recently, it makes sense again to remove other superfluous sched.h includes. There are quite a lot of files which include it but don't actually need anything defined in there. Presumably these includes were once needed for macros that used to live in sched.h, but moved to other header files in the course of cleaning it up. To ease the pain, this time I did not fiddle with any header files and only removed #includes from .c-files, which tend to cause less trouble. Compile tested against 2.6.20-rc2 and 2.6.20-rc2-mm2 (with offsets) on alpha, arm, i386, ia64, mips, powerpc, and x86_64 with allnoconfig, defconfig, allmodconfig, and allyesconfig as well as a few randconfigs on x86_64 and all configs in arch/arm/configs on arm. I also checked that no new warnings were introduced by the patch (actually, some warnings are removed that were emitted by unnecessarily included header files). * libata: add another IRQ calls (libata drivers)Akira Iguchi2007-02-091-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch is against each libata driver. Two IRQ calls are added in ata_port_operations. - irq_on() is used to enable interrupts. - irq_ack() is used to acknowledge a device interrupt. In most drivers, ata_irq_on() and ata_irq_ack() are used for irq_on and irq_ack respectively. In some drivers (ex: ahci, sata_sil24) which cannot use them as is, ata_dummy_irq_on() and ata_dummy_irq_ack() are used. * libata: convert to iomapTejun Heo2007-02-091-23/+24
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Convert libata core layer and LLDs to use iomap. * managed iomap is used. Pointer to pcim_iomap_table() is cached at host->iomap and used through out LLDs. This basically replaces host->mmio_base. * if possible, pcim_iomap_regions() is used Most iomap operation conversions are taken from Jeff Garzik <jgarzik@pobox.com>'s iomap branch. * libata: update libata LLDs to use devresTejun Heo2007-02-091-58/+21
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Update libata LLDs to use devres. Core layer is already converted to support managed LLDs. This patch simplifies initialization and fixes many resource related bugs in init failure and detach path. For example, all converted drivers now handle ata_device_add() failure gracefully without excessive resource rollback code. As most resources are released automatically on driver detach, many drivers don't need or can do with much simpler ->{port|host}_stop(). In general, stop callbacks are need iff port or host needs to be given commands to shut it down. Note that freezing is enough in many cases and ports are automatically frozen before being detached. * [PATCH] Fix numerous kcalloc() calls, convert to kzalloc()Robert P. J. Day2006-12-131-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | All kcalloc() calls of the form "kcalloc(1,...)" are converted to the equivalent kzalloc() calls, and a few kcalloc() calls with the incorrect ordering of the first two arguments are fixed. * IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlersDavid Howells2006-10-051-3/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the Linux kernel. The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path (ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()). Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception handling. Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing. I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers. I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile with minimal configurations. This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy. Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one: struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs); And put the old one back at the end: set_irq_regs(old_regs); Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ(). In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary: - update_process_times(user_mode(regs)); - profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs); + update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs())); + profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING); I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself, except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode(). Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers: (*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in the input_dev struct. (*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs pointer or not. (*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type irq_handler_t. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The biggest change is that ata_host_set is renamed to ata_host. * ata_host_set => ata_host * ata_probe_ent->host_flags => ata_probe_ent->port_flags * ata_probe_ent->host_set_flags => ata_probe_ent->_host_flags * ata_host_stats => ata_port_stats * ata_port->host => ata_port->scsi_host * ata_port->host_set => ata_port->host * ata_port_info->host_flags => ata_port_info->flags * ata_(.*)host_set(.*)\(\) => ata_\1host\2() The leading underscore in ata_probe_ent->_host_flags is to avoid reusing ->host_flags for different purpose. Currently, the only user of the field is libata-bmdma.c and probe_ent itself is scheduled to be removed. ata_port->host is reused for different purpose but this field is used inside libata core proper and of different type.
