* skge: make support for old Genesis chips optionalstephen hemminger2011-07-071-32/+47
| | | | | | | | | | | | | The GENESIS boards are really old PCI-X boards that are rare. Marvell has dropped support for this hardware and there is no reason for most users to have to have this code. Rather than riddling code with ifdef's make one macro and let the compiler do the dead code elimination. This saves about 15% of the text size. * skge: cleanup pci id tablestephen hemminger2011-07-071-11/+10
| | | | | | | | | | | The PCI table was using mix of defines for device id and hard coded hex values. This patch change it to all hex values. It also adds comments based on the names provided in the vendor driver table. There is NO CHANGE to the actual resulting table. * Add appropriate <linux/prefetch.h> include for prefetch usersPaul Gortmaker2011-05-221-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | After discovering that wide use of prefetch on modern CPUs could be a net loss instead of a win, net drivers which were relying on the implicit inclusion of prefetch.h via the list headers showed up in the resulting cleanup fallout. Give them an explicit include via the following $0.02 script. ========================================= #!/bin/bash MANUAL="" for i in `git grep -l 'prefetch(.*)' .` ; do grep -q '<linux/prefetch.h>' $i if [ $? = 0 ] ; then continue fi ( echo '?^#include <linux/?a' echo '#include <linux/prefetch.h>' echo . echo w echo q ) | ed -s $i > /dev/null 2>&1 if [ $? != 0 ]; then echo $i needs manual fixup MANUAL="$i $MANUAL" fi done echo ------------------- 8\<---------------------- echo vi $MANUAL ========================================= Signed-off-by: Paul <paul.gortmaker@windriver.com> [ Fixed up some incorrect #include placements, and added some non-network drivers and the fib_trie.c case - Linus ] Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
* ethtool: cosmetic: Use ethtool ethtool_cmd_speed APIDavid Decotigny2011-04-291-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This updates the network drivers so that they don't access the ethtool_cmd::speed field directly, but use ethtool_cmd_speed() instead. For most of the drivers, these changes are purely cosmetic and don't fix any problem, such as for those 1GbE/10GbE drivers that indirectly call their own ethtool get_settings()/mii_ethtool_gset(). The changes are meant to enforce code consistency and provide robustness with future larger throughputs, at the expense of a few CPU cycles for each ethtool operation. All drivers compiled with make allyesconfig ion x86_64 have been updated. Tested: make allyesconfig on x86_64 + e1000e/bnx2x work Signed-off-by: David Decotigny <decot@google.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
* ethtool: Use full 32 bit speed range in ethtool's set_settingsDavid Decotigny2011-04-291-2/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | This makes sure the ethtool's set_settings() callback of network drivers don't ignore the 16 most significant bits when ethtool calls their set_settings(). * ethtool: allow custom interval for physical identificationAllan, Bruce W2011-04-141-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When physical identification of an adapter is done by toggling the mechanism on and off through software utilizing the set_phys_id operation, it is done with a fixed duration for both on and off states. Some drivers may want to set a custom duration for the on/off intervals. This patch changes the API so the return code from the driver's entry point when it is called with ETHTOOL_ID_ACTIVE can specify the frequency at which to cycle the on/off states, and updates the drivers that have already been converted to use the new set_phys_id and use the synchronous method for identifying an adapter. The physical identification frequency set in the updated drivers is based on how it was done prior to the introduction of set_phys_id. Compile tested only. | * include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo2010-03-301-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. * skge: use unique IRQ nameMichal Schmidt2009-10-011-2/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Most network drivers request their IRQ when the interface is activated. skge does it in ->probe() instead, because it can work with two-port cards where the two net_devices use the same IRQ. This works fine most of the time, except in some situations when the interface gets renamed. Consider this example: 1. modprobe skge The card is detected as eth0 and requests IRQ 17. Directory /proc/irq/17/eth0 is created. 2. There is an udev rule which says this interface should be called eth1, so udev renames eth0 -> eth1. 3. modprobe 8139too The Realtek card is detected as eth0. It will be using IRQ 17 too. 4. ip link set eth0 up Now 8139too requests IRQ 17. The result is: WARNING: at fs/proc/generic.c:590 proc_register ... proc_dir_entry '17/eth0' already registered ... And "ls /proc/irq/17" shows two subdirectories, both called eth0. Fix it by using a unique name for skge's IRQ, based on the PCI address. The naming from the example then looks like this: $ grep skge /proc/interrupts 17: 169 IO-APIC-fasteoi skge@pci:0000:00:0a.0, eth0 irqbalance daemon will have to be taught to recognize "skge@" as an Ethernet interrupt. This will be a one-liner addition in classify.c. I will send a patch to irqbalance if this change is accepted. * net: dont update dev->trans_startEric Dumazet2009-05-291-2/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | Second round of drivers for Gb cards (and NIU one I forgot in the 10GB round) Now that core network takes care of trans_start updates, dont do it in drivers themselves, if possible. Drivers can avoid one cache miss (on dev->trans_start) in their start_xmit() handler. Exceptions are NETIF_F_LLTX drivers Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <eric.dumazet@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: David S. * skge: fix occasional BUG during MTU changeMichal Schmidt2009-04-141-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The BUG_ON(skge->tx_ring.to_use != skge->tx_ring.to_clean) in skge_up() was sometimes observed when setting MTU. skge_down() disables the TX queue, but then reenables it by mistake via skge_tx_clean(). Fix it by moving the waking of the queue from skge_tx_clean() to the other caller. And to make sure start_xmit is not in progress on another CPU, skge_down() should call netif_tx_disable(). The bug was reported to me by Jiri Jilek whose Debian system sometimes failed to boot. He tested the patch and the bug did not happen anymore. * net: Remove redundant NAPI functionsBen Hutchings2009-01-211-3/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | Following the removal of the unused struct net_device * parameter from the NAPI functions named *netif_rx_* in commit 908a7a1, they are exactly equivalent to the corresponding *napi_* functions and are therefore redundant. * net: Remove unused netdev arg from some NAPI interfaces.Neil Horman2008-12-221-3/+3
| | | | | | | | | | When the napi api was changed to separate its 1:1 binding to the net_device struct, the netif_rx_[prep|schedule|complete] api failed to remove the now vestigual net_device structure parameter. This patch cleans up that api by properly removing it.. Signed-off-by: Neil Horman <nhorman@tuxdriver.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
* netdev: add more functions to netdevice opsStephen Hemminger2008-11-201-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | This patch moves neigh_setup and hard_start_xmit into the network device ops structure. For bisection, fix all the previously converted drivers as well. Bonding driver took the biggest hit on this. Added a prefetch of the hard_start_xmit in the fast path to try and reduce any impact this would have.
