* include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo2010-03-301-1/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. * PM: Introduce PM_EVENT_HIBERNATE callback stateRafael J. Wysocki2008-02-231-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | During the last step of hibernation in the "platform" mode (with the help of ACPI) we use the suspend code, including the devices' ->suspend() methods, to prepare the system for entering the ACPI S4 system sleep state. But at least for some devices the operations performed by the ->suspend() callback in that case must be different from its operations during regular suspend. For this reason, introduce the new PM event type PM_EVENT_HIBERNATE and pass it to the device drivers' ->suspend() methods during the last phase of hibernation, so that they can distinguish this case and handle it as appropriate. Modify the drivers that handle PM_EVENT_SUSPEND in a special way and need to handle PM_EVENT_HIBERNATE in the same way. These changes are necessary to fix a hibernation regression related to the i915 driver (ref. http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/2/22/488). Signed-off-by: Rafael J. * backlight: Separate backlight properties from backlight ops pointersRichard Purdie2007-02-201-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | Per device data such as brightness belongs to the indivdual device and should therefore be separate from the the backlight operation function pointers. This patch splits the two types of data and allows simplifcation of some code. Signed-off-by: Richard Purdie <rpurdie@rpsys.net>
* backlight: Remove uneeded update_status call from chipsfb.cRichard Purdie2007-02-201-18/+0
| | | | | | | | Remove uneeded update_status call from chipsfb.c since the backlight core now receives software blanking notifications too. Signed-off-by: Richard Purdie <rpurdie@rpsys.net>
* backlight: Fix external uses of backlight internal semaphoreRichard Purdie2007-02-201-6/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | backlight_device->sem has a very specific use as documented in the header file. The external users of this are using it for a different reason, to serialise access to the update_status() method. backlight users were supposed to implement their own internal serialisation of update_status() if needed but everyone is doing things differently and incorrectly. Therefore add a global mutex to take care of serialisation for everyone, once and for all. Locking for get_brightness remains optional since most users don't need it. Also update the lcd class in a similar way. Signed-off-by: Richard Purdie <rpurdie@rpsys.net>
* [PATCH] powermac: Combined fixes for backlight codeMichael Hanselmann2006-07-101-2/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch fixes several problems: - pmac_backlight_key() is called under interrupt context, and therefore can't use mutexes or semaphores, so defer the backlight level for later, as it's not critical (original code by Aristeu S. Rozanski F. <aris@valeta.org>). - Add exports for functions that might be called from modules - Fix Kconfig depdencies on PMAC_BACKLIGHT. - Fix locking issues on calls from inside the driver (reported by Aristeu S. Rozanski F., too) - Fix wrong calculation of backlight values in some of the drivers - Replace pmac_backlight_key_up/down by inline functions [akpm@osdl.org: fix function prototypes] Signed-off-by: Michael Hanselmann <linux-kernel@hansmi.ch> Acked-by: Aristeu S. * [PATCH] vt: Remove VT-specific declarations and definitions from tty.hJon Smirl2006-07-101-1/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | MAX_NR_CONSOLES, fg_console, want_console and last_console are more of a function of the VT layer than the TTY one. Moving these to vt.h and vt_kern.h allows all of the framebuffer and VT console drivers to remove their dependency on tty.h. * [PATCH] Rewritten backlight infrastructure for portable Apple computersMichael Hanselmann2006-06-251-4/+26
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch contains a total rewrite of the backlight infrastructure for portable Apple computers. Backward compatibility is retained. A sysfs interface allows userland to control the brightness with more steps than before. Userland is allowed to upload a brightness curve for different monitors, similar to Mac OS X. * [PATCH] fbcon/fbdev: Move softcursor out of fbdev to fbconAntonino A. Daplas2005-11-071-1/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | According to Jon Smirl, filling in the field fb_cursor with soft_cursor for drivers that do not support hardware cursors is redundant. The soft_cursor function is usable by all drivers because it is just a wrapper around fb_imageblit. And because soft_cursor is an fbcon-specific hook, the file is moved to the console directory. Thus, drivers that do not support hardware cursors can leave the fb_cursor field blank. For drivers that do, they can fill up this field with their own version. The end result is a smaller code size. And if the framebuffer console is not loaded, module/kernel size is also reduced because the soft_cursor module will also not be loaded. * [PATCH] swsusp: switch pm_message_t to structPavel Machek2005-09-051-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | This adds type-checking to pm_message_t, so that people can't confuse it with int or u32. It also allows us to fix "disk yoyo" during suspend (disk spinning down/up/down). * [PATCH] ppc32: Remove CONFIG_PMAC_PBOOKBenjamin Herrenschmidt2005-06-271-84/+92
| | | | | | | | | | | | This patch removes CONFIG_PMAC_PBOOK (PowerBook support). This is now split into CONFIG_PMAC_MEDIABAY for the actual hotswap bay that some powerbooks have, CONFIG_PM for power management related code, and just left out of any CONFIG_* option for some generally useful stuff that can be used on non-laptops as well. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
