| * Embed a struct path into struct nameidata instead of nd->{dentry,mnt}Jan Blunck2008-02-141-2/+2

In most cases there is no good reason why someone would want to use a dentry for itself. This series reflects that fact and embeds a struct path into nameidata. Together with the other patches of this series - it enforced the correct order of getting/releasing the reference count on <dentry, vfsmount> pairs - it prepares the VFS for stacking support since it is essential to have a struct path in every place where the stack can be traversed - it reduces the overall code size: without patch series: text data bss dec hex filename 5321639 858418 715768 6895825 6938d1 vmlinux with patch series: text data bss dec hex filename 5320026 858418 715768 6894212 693284 vmlinux This patch: Switch from nd->{dentry,mnt} to nd->path.{dentry,mnt} everywhere. * | NFS: Allow text-based mounts via compat_sys_mountChuck Lever2008-02-131-3/+0
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The compat_sys_mount() system call throws EINVAL for text-based NFSv4 mounts. The text-based mount interface assumes that any mount option blob that doesn't set the version field to "1" is a C string (ie not a legacy mount request). The compat_sys_mount() call treats blobs that don't set the version field to "1" as an error. We just relax the check in compat_sys_mount() a bit to allow C strings to be passed down to the NFSv4 client. * timerfd: new timerfd APIDavide Libenzi2008-02-051-5/+27
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This is the new timerfd API as it is implemented by the following patch: int timerfd_create(int clockid, int flags); int timerfd_settime(int ufd, int flags, const struct itimerspec *utmr, struct itimerspec *otmr); int timerfd_gettime(int ufd, struct itimerspec *otmr); The timerfd_create() API creates an un-programmed timerfd fd. The "clockid" parameter can be either CLOCK_MONOTONIC or CLOCK_REALTIME. The timerfd_settime() API give new settings by the timerfd fd, by optionally retrieving the previous expiration time (in case the "otmr" parameter is not NULL). The time value specified in "utmr" is absolute, if the TFD_TIMER_ABSTIME bit is set in the "flags" parameter. Otherwise it's a relative time. The timerfd_gettime() API returns the next expiration time of the timer, or {0, 0} if the timerfd has not been set yet. Like the previous timerfd API implementation, read(2) and poll(2) are supported (with the same interface). Here's a simple test program I used to exercise the new timerfd APIs: http://www.xmailserver.org/timerfd-test2.c [akpm@linux-foundation.org: coding-style cleanups] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: fix ia64 build] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: fix m68k build] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: fix mips build] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: fix alpha, arm, blackfin, cris, m68k, s390, sparc and sparc64 builds] [heiko.carstens@de.ibm.com: fix s390] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: fix powerpc build] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: fix sparc64 more] Signed-off-by: Davide Libenzi <davidel@xmailserver.org> Cc: Michael Kerrisk <mtk-manpages@gmx.net> Cc: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de> Cc: Davide Libenzi <davidel@xmailserver.org> Cc: Michael Kerrisk <mtk-manpages@gmx.net> Cc: Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Heiko Carstens <heiko.carstens@de.ibm.com> Cc: Michael Kerrisk <mtk.manpages@gmail.com> Cc: Davide Libenzi <davidel@xmailserver.org> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

* mm: variable length argument supportOllie Wild2007-07-191-75/+53
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Remove the arg+env limit of MAX_ARG_PAGES by copying the strings directly from the old mm into the new mm. We create the new mm before the binfmt code runs, and place the new stack at the very top of the address space. Once the binfmt code runs and figures out where the stack should be, we move it downwards. It is a bit peculiar in that we have one task with two mm's, one of which is inactive. * [PATCH] Add epoll compat_ code to fs/compat.cDavide Libenzi2007-03-081-0/+100
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | IA64 and ARM-OABI are currently using their own version of epoll compat_ code. An architecture needs epoll_event translation if alignof(u64) in 32 bit mode is different from alignof(u64) in 64 bit mode. If an architecture needs epoll_event translation, it must define struct compat_epoll_event in asm/compat.h and set CONFIG_HAVE_COMPAT_EPOLL_EVENT and use compat_sys_epoll_ctl and compat_sys_epoll_wait. All 64 bit architecture should use compat_sys_epoll_pwait. * [PATCH] fdtable: Make fdarray and fdsets equal in sizeVadim Lobanov2006-12-101-5/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently, each fdtable supports three dynamically-sized arrays of data: the fdarray and two fdsets. The code allows the number of fds supported by the fdarray (fdtable->max_fds) to differ from the number of fds supported by each of the fdsets (fdtable->max_fdset). In practice, it is wasteful for these two sizes to differ: whenever we hit a limit on the smaller-capacity structure, we will reallocate the entire fdtable and all the dynamic arrays within it, so any delta in the memory used by the larger-capacity structure will never be touched at all. Rather than hogging this excess, we shouldn't even allocate it in the first place, and keep the capacities of the fdarray and the fdsets equal. This patch removes fdtable->max_fdset. As an added bonus, most of the supporting code becomes simpler. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 758333458aa719bfc26ec16eafd4ad3a9e96014d fixes the not checked copy_to_user return value of compat_sys_pselect7. I ran into this too because of an old source tree, but my fix would look quite a bit different to Andi's fix. The reason is that the compat function IMHO should behave the very same as the non-compat function if possible. Since sys_pselect7 does not return -EFAULT in this specific case, change the compat code so it behaves like sys_pselect7. * [PATCH] VFS: Make filldir_t and struct kstat deal in 64-bit inode numbersDavid Howells2006-10-031-5/+13
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | These patches make the kernel pass 64-bit inode numbers internally when communicating to userspace, even on a 32-bit system. They are required because some filesystems have intrinsic 64-bit inode numbers: NFS3+ and XFS for example. The 64-bit inode numbers are then propagated to userspace automatically where the arch supports it. Problems have been seen with userspace (eg: ld.so) using the 64-bit inode number returned by stat64() or getdents64() to differentiate files, and failing because the 64-bit inode number space was compressed to 32-bits, and so overlaps occur. This patch: Make filldir_t take a 64-bit inode number and struct kstat carry a 64-bit inode number so that 64-bit inode numbers can be passed back to userspace. The stat functions then returns the full 64-bit inode number where available and where possible. If it is not possible to represent the inode number supplied by the filesystem in the field provided by userspace, then error EOVERFLOW will be issued. Similarly, the getdents/readdir functions now pass the full 64-bit inode number to userspace where possible, returning EOVERFLOW instead when a directory entry is encountered that can't be properly represented. Note that this means that some inodes will not be stat'able on a 32-bit system with old libraries where they were before - but it does mean that there will be no ambiguity over what a 32-bit inode number refers to. Note similarly that directory scans may be cut short with an error on a 32-bit system with old libraries where the scan would work before for the same reasons. It is judged unlikely that this situation will occur because modern glibc uses 64-bit capable versions of stat and getdents class functions exclusively, and that older systems are unlikely to encounter unrepresentable inode numbers anyway. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Revert Andrew Morton's patch to temporarily hack around the lack of a declaration of sigset_t in linux/compat.h to make the block-disablement patches build on IA64. * [PATCH] csa: convert CONFIG tag for extended accounting routinesJay Lan2006-10-011-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | There were a few accounting data/macros that are used in CSA but are #ifdef'ed inside CONFIG_BSD_PROCESS_ACCT. This patch is to change those ifdef's from CONFIG_BSD_PROCESS_ACCT to CONFIG_TASK_XACCT. A few defines are moved from kernel/acct.c and include/linux/acct.h to kernel/tsacct.c and include/linux/tsacct_kern.h. * [PATCH] VFS: Permit filesystem to perform statfs with a known root dentryDavid Howells2006-06-231-4/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Give the statfs superblock operation a dentry pointer rather than a superblock pointer. This complements the get_sb() patch. That reduced the significance of sb->s_root, allowing NFS to place a fake root there. However, NFS does require a dentry to use as a target for the statfs operation. This permits the root in the vfsmount to be used instead. linux/mount.h has been added where necessary to make allyesconfig build successfully. Interest has also been expressed for use with the FUSE and XFS filesystems. * [PATCH] NFS: fix error handling on access_ok in compat_sys_nfsservctlLin Feng Shen2006-05-211-85/+92
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Functions compat_nfs_svc_trans, compat_nfs_clnt_trans, compat_nfs_exp_trans, compat_nfs_getfd_trans and compat_nfs_getfs_trans, which are called by compat_sys_nfsservctl(fs/compat.c), don't handle the return value of access_ok properly. access_ok return 1 when the addr is valid, and 0 when it's not, but these functions have the reversed understanding. When the address is valid, they always return -EFAULT to compat_sys_nfsservctl. An example is to run /usr/sbin/rpc.nfsd(32bit program on Power5). It doesn't function as expected. strace showes that nfsservctl returns -EFAULT. The patch fixes this by correcting the error handling on the return value of access_ok in the five functions. * [PATCH] select: fix returned timevalAndrew Morton2006-02-111-12/+25
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | With David Woodhouse <dwmw2@infradead.org> select() presently has a habit of increasing the value of the user's `timeout' argument on return. We were writing back a timeout larger than the original. We _deliberately_ round up, since we know we must wait at _least_ as long as the caller asks us to. The patch adds a couple of helper functions for magnitude comparison of timespecs and of timevals, and uses them to prevent the various poll and select functions from returning a timeout which is larger than the one which was passed in. The patch also fixes a bug in compat_sys_pselect7(): it was adding the new timeout value to the old one and was returning that. It should just return the new timeout value. (We have various handy timespec/timeval-to-from-nsec conversion functions in time.h. But this code open-codes it all). Cc: "David S. * [PATCH] compat: fix compat_sys_openat and friendsStephen Rothwell2006-02-011-6/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Most of the 64 bit architectures will zero extend the first argument to compat_sys_{openat,newfstatat,futimesat} which will fail if the 32 bit syscall was passed AT_FDCWD (which is a small negative number). * [PATCH] Fix regression added by ppoll/pselect code.David S. Miller2006-01-191-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The compat layer timeout handling changes in: 9f72949f679df06021c9e43886c9191494fdb007 are busted. This is most easily seen with an X application that uses sub-second select/poll timeout such as emacs. You hit a key and it takes a second or so before the app responds. The two ROUND_UP() calls upon entry are using {tv,ts}_sec where it should instead be using {tv_usec,ts_nsec}, which perfectly explains the observed incorrect behavior. Another bug shot down with git bisect. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
* [PATCH] Add pselect/ppoll system call implementationDavid Woodhouse2006-01-181-37/+223
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The following implementation of ppoll() and pselect() system calls depends on the architecture providing a TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK flag in the thread_info. These system calls have to change the signal mask during their operation, and signal handlers must be invoked using the new, temporary signal mask. The old signal mask must be restored either upon successful exit from the system call, or upon returning from the invoked signal handler if the system call is interrupted. We can't simply restore the original signal mask and return to userspace, since the restored signal mask may actually block the signal which interrupted the system call. The TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK flag deals with this by causing the syscall exit path to trap into do_signal() just as TIF_SIGPENDING does, and by causing do_signal() to use the saved signal mask instead of the current signal mask when setting up the stack frame for the signal handler -- or by causing do_signal() to simply restore the saved signal mask in the case where there is no handler to be invoked. The first patch implements the sys_pselect() and sys_ppoll() system calls, which are present only if TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK is defined. That #ifdef should go away in time when all architectures have implemented it. The second patch implements TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK for the PowerPC kernel (in the -mm tree), and the third patch then removes the arch-specific implementations of sys_rt_sigsuspend() and replaces them with generic versions using the same trick. The fourth and fifth patches, provided by David Howells, implement TIF_RESTORE_SIGMASK for FR-V and i386 respectively, and the sixth patch adds the syscalls to the i386 syscall table. This patch: Add the pselect() and ppoll() system calls, providing core routines usable by the original select() and poll() system calls and also the new calls (with their semantics w.r.t timeouts). * [PATCH] vfs: *at functions: coreUlrich Drepper2006-01-181-6/+42
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Here is a series of patches which introduce in total 13 new system calls which take a file descriptor/filename pair instead of a single file name. These functions, openat etc, have been discussed on numerous occasions. They are needed to implement race-free filesystem traversal, they are necessary to implement a virtual per-thread current working directory (think multi-threaded backup software), etc. We have in glibc today implementations of the interfaces which use the /proc/self/fd magic. But this code is rather expensive. Here are some results (similar to what Jim Meyering posted before). The test creates a deep directory hierarchy on a tmpfs filesystem. Then rm -fr is used to remove all directories. Without syscall support I get this: real 0m31.921s user 0m0.688s sys 0m31.234s With syscall support the results are much better: real 0m20.699s user 0m0.536s sys 0m20.149s The interfaces are for obvious reasons currently not much used. But they'll be used. coreutils (and Jeff's posixutils) are already using them. Furthermore, code like ftw/fts in libc (maybe even glob) will also start using them. I expect a patch to make follow soon. Every program which is walking the filesystem tree will benefit.
