* License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman2017-11-021-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. * ext4: Add statx supportDavid Howells2017-04-031-0/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Return enhanced file attributes from the Ext4 filesystem. This includes the following: (1) The inode creation time (i_crtime) as stx_btime, setting STATX_BTIME. (2) Certain FS_xxx_FL flags are mapped to stx_attribute flags. This requires that all ext4 inodes have a getattr call, not just some of them, so to this end, split the ext4_getattr() function and only call part of it where appropriate. * | fscrypto: make filename crypto functions return 0 on successEric Biggers2016-09-151-3/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Several filename crypto functions: fname_decrypt(), fscrypt_fname_disk_to_usr(), and fscrypt_fname_usr_to_disk(), returned the output length on success or -errno on failure. However, the output length was redundant with the value written to 'oname->len'. It is also potentially error-prone to make callers have to check for '< 0' instead of '!= 0'. Therefore, make these functions return 0 instead of a length, and make the callers who cared about the return value being a length use 'oname->len' instead. For consistency also make other callers check for a nonzero result rather than a negative result. This change also fixes the inconsistency of fname_encrypt() actually already returning 0 on success, not a length like the other filename crypto functions and as documented in its function comment. * mm, fs: get rid of PAGE_CACHE_* and page_cache_{get,release} macrosKirill A. Shutemov2016-04-041-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} macros were introduced *long* time ago with promise that one day it will be possible to implement page cache with bigger chunks than PAGE_SIZE. This promise never materialized. And unlikely will. We have many places where PAGE_CACHE_SIZE assumed to be equal to PAGE_SIZE. And it's constant source of confusion on whether PAGE_CACHE_* or PAGE_* constant should be used in a particular case, especially on the border between fs and mm. Global switching to PAGE_CACHE_SIZE != PAGE_SIZE would cause to much breakage to be doable. Let's stop pretending that pages in page cache are special. They are not. The changes are pretty straight-forward: - <foo> << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - <foo> >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} -> PAGE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN}; - page_cache_get() -> get_page(); - page_cache_release() -> put_page(); This patch contains automated changes generated with coccinelle using script below. For some reason, coccinelle doesn't patch header files. I've called spatch for them manually. The only adjustment after coccinelle is revert of changes to PAGE_CAHCE_ALIGN definition: we are going to drop it later. There are few places in the code where coccinelle didn't reach. I'll fix them manually in a separate patch. Comments and documentation also will be addressed with the separate patch. virtual patch @@ expression E; @@ - E << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) + E @@ expression E; @@ - E >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) + E @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT + PAGE_SHIFT @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_SIZE + PAGE_SIZE @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_MASK + PAGE_MASK @@ expression E; @@ - PAGE_CACHE_ALIGN(E) + PAGE_ALIGN(E) @@ expression E; @@ - page_cache_get(E) + get_page(E) @@ expression E; @@ - page_cache_release(E) + put_page(E) Signed-off-by: Kirill A. | * ext4 crypto: use per-inode tfm structureTheodore Ts'o2015-05-311-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | As suggested by Herbert Xu, we shouldn't allocate a new tfm each time we read or write a page. Instead we can use a single tfm hanging off the inode's crypt_info structure for all of our encryption needs for that inode, since the tfm can be used by multiple crypto requests in parallel. Also use cmpxchg() to avoid races that could result in crypt_info structure getting doubly allocated or doubly freed. Signed-off-by: Theodore Ts'o <tytso@mit.edu>

This reduces the size usage of an in-memory inode when it is not using encryption. 2) We drop the ext4_fname_crypto_ctx entirely, and use the per-inode encryption structure instead. This remove an unnecessary memory allocation and free for the fname_crypto_ctx as well as allowing us to reuse the ctfm in a directory for multiple lookups and file creations. 3) We also cache the inode's policy information in the ext4_crypt_info structure so we don't have to continually read it out of the extended attributes. 4) We now keep the keyring key in the inode's encryption structure instead of releasing it after we are done using it to derive the per-inode key. This allows us to test to see if the key has been revoked; if it has, we prevent the use of the derived key and free it. 5) When an inode is released (or when the derived key is freed), we will use memset_explicit() to zero out the derived key, so it's not left hanging around in memory. This implies that when a user logs out, it is important to first revoke the key, and then unlink it, and then finally, to use "echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches" to release any decrypted pages and dcache entries from the system caches. 6) All this, and we also shrink the number of lines of code by around 100. :-) Signed-off-by: Theodore Ts'o <tytso@mit.edu>

* ext4: Remove CONFIG_EXT4_FS_XATTRTao Ma2012-12-101-4/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Ted has sent out a RFC about removing this feature. Eric and Jan confirmed that both RedHat and SUSE enable this feature in all their product. David also said that "As far as I know, it's enabled in all Android kernels that use ext4." So it seems OK for us. And what's more, as inline data depends its implementation on xattr, and to be frank, I don't run any test again inline data enabled while xattr disabled. So I think we should add inline data and remove this config option in the same release. [ The savings if you disable CONFIG_EXT4_FS_XATTR is only 27k, which isn't much in the grand scheme of things. Since no one seems to be testing this configuration except for some automated compile farms, on balance we are better removing this config option, and so that it is effectively always enabled. -- tytso ] Cc: David Brown <davidb@codeaurora.org> Cc: Eric Sandeen <sandeen@redhat.com> Reviewed-by: Jan Kara <jack@suse.cz> Signed-off-by: Tao Ma <boyu.mt@taobao.com> Signed-off-by: "Theodore Ts'o" <tytso@mit.edu>
* ext4: symlink must be handled via filesystem specific operationDmitry Monakhov2010-05-161-0/+2
| | | | | | | | generic setattr implementation is no longer responsible for quota transfer so synlinks must be handled via ext4_setattr. Signed-off-by: Dmitry Monakhov <dmonakhov@openvz.org> Signed-off-by: "Theodore Ts'o" <tytso@mit.edu>
* ext4: Rename ext4dev to ext4Theodore Ts'o2008-10-101-2/+2
| | | | | | | | The ext4 filesystem is getting stable enough that it's time to drop the "dev" prefix. Also remove the requirement for the TEST_FILESYS flag. Signed-off-by: "Theodore Ts'o" <tytso@mit.edu>

| | | | | | | | | | Move ext4 headers out of include/linux. This is just the trivial move, there's some more thing that could be done later. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Mingming Cao <cmm@us.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: "Theodore Ts'o" <tytso@mit.edu>
* [PATCH] mark struct inode_operations const 1Arjan van de Ven2007-02-121-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | Many struct inode_operations in the kernel can be "const". Marking them const moves these to the .rodata section, which avoids false sharing with potential dirty data. In addition it'll catch accidental writes at compile time to these shared resources.
