By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. The previous xfs_cluster_write() code would only flush pages up to EOF at the time of the writepage, thus ensuring that any pages due to file-extending writes would be handled on a separate cycle and with a new, updated block mapping. The updated code establishes a block mapping in xfs_writepage_map() that could extend beyond EOF if the file has post-eof preallocation. Because we now use the generic writeback infrastructure and pass the cached mapping to each writepage call, there is no implicit EOF limit in place. If eofblocks trimming occurs during ->writepages(), any post-eof portion of the cached mapping becomes invalid. The eofblocks code has no means to serialize against writeback because there are no pages associated with post-eof blocks. Therefore if an eofblocks trim occurs and is followed by a file-extending buffered write, not only has the mapping become invalid, but we could end up writing a page to disk based on the invalid mapping. Consider the following sequence of events: - A buffered write creates a delalloc extent and post-eof speculative preallocation. - Writeback starts and on the first writepage cycle, the delalloc extent is converted to real blocks (including the post-eof blocks) and the mapping is cached. - The file is closed and xfs_release() trims post-eof blocks. The cached writeback mapping is now invalid. - Another buffered write appends the file with a delalloc extent. - The concurrent writeback cycle picks up the just written page because the writeback range end is LLONG_MAX. xfs_writepage_map() attributes it to the (now invalid) cached mapping and writes the data to an incorrect location on disk (and where the file offset is still backed by a delalloc extent). This problem is reproduced by xfstests test generic/464, which triggers racing writes, appends, open/closes and writeback requests. To address this problem, trim the mapping used during writeback to within EOF when the mapping is validated. This ensures the mapping is revalidated for any pages encountered beyond EOF as of the time the current mapping was cached or last validated. This should not ever occur in XFS, but we don't defend against it properly if it does. The only place where we remove bufferheads from a page is in xfs_vm_releasepage(), but we can't tell the difference here between "page is dirty so don't release" and "page is dirty but is being invalidated so release it". In some places that are invalidating pages ask for pages to be released and follow up afterward calling ->releasepage by checking whether the page was dirty and then aborting the invalidation. This is a possible vector for releasing buffers from a page but then leaving it in the mapping, so we really do need to avoid dirty pages in xfs_vm_releasepage(). To differentiate between invalidated pages and normal pages, we need to clear the page dirty flag when invalidating the pages. This can be done through xfs_vm_invalidatepage(), and will result xfs_vm_releasepage() seeing the page as clean which matches the bufferhead state on the page after calling block_invalidatepage(). Hence we can re-add the page dirty check in xfs_vm_releasepage to catch the case where we might be releasing a page that is actually dirty and so should not have the bufferheads on it removed. This will remove one possible vector of "dirty page with no bufferheads" and so help narrow down the search for the root cause of that problem. But we should at least handle it somehow, so return EFSCORRUPTED here. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | xfs_attr3_root_inactive() walks the attr fork tree to invalidate the associated blocks. xfs_attr3_node_inactive() recursively descends from internal blocks to leaf blocks, caching block address values along the way to revisit parent blocks, locate the next entry and descend down that branch of the tree. The code that attempts to reread the parent block is unsafe because it assumes that the local xfs_da_node_entry pointer remains valid after an xfs_trans_brelse() and re-read of the parent buffer. Under heavy memory pressure, it is possible that the buffer has been reclaimed and reallocated by the time the parent block is reread. This means that 'btree' can point to an invalid memory address, lead to a random/garbage value for child_fsb and cause the subsequent read of the attr fork to go off the rails and return a NULL buffer for an attr fork offset that is most likely not allocated. Note that this problem can be manufactured by setting XFS_ATTR_BTREE_REF to 0 to prevent LRU caching of attr buffers, creating a file with a multi-level attr fork and removing it to trigger inactivation. To address this problem, reinit the node/btree pointers to the parent buffer after it has been re-read. This ensures btree points to a valid record and allows the walk to proceed. Hence make the padded, 64 bit aligned version of the structure the one we always use for formatting the log and get rid of the 64 bit variant. But for dio writes that could extend file size we update the in-core inode size first, then convert the unwritten extents to real allocations at dio completion time in xfs_dio_write_end_io(). Thus a racing direct read could see the new i_size and find the unwritten extents first and read zeros instead of actual data, if the direct writer also takes a shared iolock. Fix it by updating the in-core inode size after the unwritten extent conversion. To do this, introduce a new boolean argument to xfs_iomap_write_unwritten() to tell if we want to update in-core i_size or not. The block_device has different life time rules from the gendisk and request_queue and is usually only available when the block device node is open. Other callers need to explicitly create one (e.g. the lightnvm passthrough code, or the new nvme multipathing code). For the actual I/O path all that we need is the gendisk, which exists once per block device. But given that the block layer also does partition remapping we additionally need a partition index, which is used for said remapping in generic_make_request. Note that all the block drivers generally want request_queue or sometimes the gendisk, so this removes a layer of indirection all over the stack. This has three major drawbacks: 1) It consumes memory unnecessarily. For every 4k page that is read via a DAX mmap() over a hole, we allocate a new page cache page. This means that if you read 1GiB worth of pages, you end up using 1GiB of zeroed memory. Instead of just inserting a common zero page we have to allocate a page cache page, zero it, and then insert it. Here are the average latencies of dax_load_hole() as measured by ftrace on a random test box: Old method, using zeroed page cache pages: 3.4 us New method, using the common 4k zero page: 0.8 us This was the average latency over 1 GiB of sequential reads done by this simple fio script: [global] size=1G filename=/root/dax/data fallocate=none [io] rw=read ioengine=mmap 3) The fact that we had to check for both DAX exceptional entries and for page cache pages in the radix tree made the DAX code more complex. Solve these issues by following the lead of the DAX PMD code and using a common 4k zero page instead. As with the PMD code we will now insert a DAX exceptional entry into the radix tree instead of a struct page pointer which allows us to remove all the special casing in the DAX code. Note that we do still pretty aggressively check for regular pages in the DAX radix tree, especially where we take action based on the bits set in the page. If we ever find a regular page in our radix tree now that most likely means that someone besides DAX is inserting pages (which has happened lots of times in the past), and we want to find that out early and fail loudly. This solution also removes the extra memory consumption. Another major change is that we remove dax_pfn_mkwrite() from our fault flow, and instead rely on the page fault itself to make the PTE dirty and writeable. The following description from the patch adding the vm_insert_mixed_mkwrite() call explains this a little more: "To be able to use the common 4k zero page in DAX we need to have our PTE fault path look more like our PMD fault path where a PTE entry can be marked as dirty and writeable as it is first inserted rather than waiting for a follow-up dax_pfn_mkwrite() => finish_mkwrite_fault() call. Right now we can rely on having a dax_pfn_mkwrite() call because we can distinguish between these two cases in do_wp_page(): case 1: 4k zero page => writable DAX storage case 2: read-only DAX storage => writeable DAX storage This distinction is made by via vm_normal_page(). vm_normal_page() returns false for the common 4k zero page, though, just as it does for DAX ptes. Instead of special casing the DAX + 4k zero page case we will simplify our DAX PTE page fault sequence so that it matches our DAX PMD sequence, and get rid of the dax_pfn_mkwrite() helper. We will instead use dax_iomap_fault() to handle write-protection faults. This means that insert_pfn() needs to follow the lead of insert_pfn_pmd() and allow us to pass in a 'mkwrite' flag. This optimization is incorrect in the following sequence of events: Task A Task B ------------------------------------------------------- xfs_file_fsync() _xfs_log_force_lsn() xlog_sync() [submit PREFLUSH] xfs_file_fsync() file_write_and_wait_range() [submit WRITE X] [endio WRITE X] _xfs_log_force_lsn() xlog_wait() [endio PREFLUSH] The write X is not guarantied to be on persistent storage when PREFLUSH request in completed, because write A was submitted after the PREFLUSH request, but xfs_file_fsync() of task A will be notified of log_flushed=1 and will skip explicit flush. If the system crashes after fsync of task A, write X may not be present on disk after reboot. This bug was discovered and demonstrated using Josef Bacik's dm-log-writes target, which can be used to record block io operations and then replay a subset of these operations onto the target device.
