* mm, vmalloc: use __GFP_HIGHMEM implicitlyMichal Hocko2017-05-081-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | __vmalloc* allows users to provide gfp flags for the underlying allocation. This API is quite popular $ git grep "=[[:space:]]__vmalloc\|return[[:space:]]*__vmalloc" | wc -l 77 The only problem is that many people are not aware that they really want to give __GFP_HIGHMEM along with other flags because there is really no reason to consume precious lowmemory on CONFIG_HIGHMEM systems for pages which are mapped to the kernel vmalloc space. About half of users don't use this flag, though. This signals that we make the API unnecessarily too complex. This patch simply uses __GFP_HIGHMEM implicitly when allocating pages to be mapped to the vmalloc space. Current users which add __GFP_HIGHMEM are simplified and drop the flag. * cred: simpler, 1D supplementary groupsAlexey Dobriyan2016-10-071-46/+21
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Current supplementary groups code can massively overallocate memory and is implemented in a way so that access to individual gid is done via 2D array. If number of gids is <= 32, memory allocation is more or less tolerable (140/148 bytes). But if it is not, code allocates full page (!) regardless and, what's even more fun, doesn't reuse small 32-entry array. 2D array means dependent shifts, loads and LEAs without possibility to optimize them (gid is never known at compile time). All of the above is unnecessary. Switch to the usual trailing-zero-len-array scheme. Memory is allocated with kmalloc/vmalloc() and only as much as needed. Accesses become simpler (LEA 8(gi,idx,4) or even without displacement). Maximum number of gids is 65536 which translates to 256KB+8 bytes. I think kernel can handle such allocation. On my usual desktop system with whole 9 (nine) aux groups, struct group_info shrinks from 148 bytes to 44 bytes, yay! Nice side effects: - "gi->gid[i]" is shorter than "GROUP_AT(gi, i)", less typing, - fix little mess in net/ipv4/ping.c should have been using GROUP_AT macro but this point becomes moot, - aux group allocation is persistent and should be accounted as such. * kernel: conditionally support non-root users, groups and capabilitiesIulia Manda2015-04-151-3/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | There are a lot of embedded systems that run most or all of their functionality in init, running as root:root. For these systems, supporting multiple users is not necessary. This patch adds a new symbol, CONFIG_MULTIUSER, that makes support for non-root users, non-root groups, and capabilities optional. It is enabled under CONFIG_EXPERT menu. When this symbol is not defined, UID and GID are zero in any possible case and processes always have all capabilities. The following syscalls are compiled out: setuid, setregid, setgid, setreuid, setresuid, getresuid, setresgid, getresgid, setgroups, getgroups, setfsuid, setfsgid, capget, capset. Also, groups.c is compiled out completely. In kernel/capability.c, capable function was moved in order to avoid adding two ifdef blocks. This change saves about 25 KB on a defconfig build. The most minimal kernels have total text sizes in the high hundreds of kB rather than low MB. (The 25k goes down a bit with allnoconfig, but not that much. The kernel was booted in Qemu. All the common functionalities work. Adding users/groups is not possible, failing with -ENOSYS. * userns: Don't allow setgroups until a gid mapping has been setablishedEric W. Biederman2014-12-091-1/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | setgroups is unique in not needing a valid mapping before it can be called, in the case of setgroups(0, NULL) which drops all supplemental groups. The design of the user namespace assumes that CAP_SETGID can not actually be used until a gid mapping is established. Therefore add a helper function to see if the user namespace gid mapping has been established and call that function in the setgroups permission check. This is part of the fix for CVE-2014-8989, being able to drop groups without privilege using user namespaces. * groups: Consolidate the setgroups permission checksEric W. Biederman2014-12-051-1/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Today there are 3 instances of setgroups and due to an oversight their permission checking has diverged. Add a common function so that they may all share the same permission checking code. This corrects the current oversight in the current permission checks and adds a helper to avoid this in the future. A user namespace security fix will update this new helper, shortly. Cc: stable@vger.kernel.org Signed-off-by: "Eric W. Biederman" <ebiederm@xmission.com>
* kernel/groups.c: remove return value of set_groupsWang YanQing2014-04-031-12/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | After commit 6307f8fee295 ("security: remove dead hook task_setgroups"), set_groups will always return zero, so we could just remove return value of set_groups. This patch reduces code size, and simplfies code to use set_groups, because we don't need to check its return value any more. * userns: Kill nsown_capable it makes the wrong thing easyEric W. Biederman2013-08-301-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | nsown_capable is a special case of ns_capable essentially for just CAP_SETUID and CAP_SETGID. For the existing users it doesn't noticably simplify things and from the suggested patches I have seen it encourages people to do the wrong thing. So remove nsown_capable.
