| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | During system-wide PM, genpd relies on its PM callbacks to be invoked for all its attached devices, as to deal with powering off/on the PM domain. In other words, genpd is not compatible with the direct_complete path, if executed by the PM core for any of its attached devices. However, when genpd's ->prepare() callback invokes pm_generic_prepare(), it does not take into account that it may return 1. Instead it treats that as an error internally and expects the PM core to abort the prepare phase and roll back. This leads to genpd not properly powering on/off the PM domain, because its internal counters gets wrongly balanced. To fix the behaviour, allow drivers to return 1 from their ->prepare() callbacks, but let's return 0 from genpd's ->prepare() callback in such case, as that prevents the PM core from running the direct_complete path for the device. Moreover, it tries to refresh QoS values for already suspended devices in a quite questionable way. For the above reasons, rework it to be a bit more consistent. First off, note that dev_pm_qos_read_value() in dev_update_qos_constraint() and __default_power_down_ok() is evaluated for devices in suspend. Moreover, that only happens if the effective_constraint_ns value for them is negative (meaning "no suspend"). It is not evaluated in any other cases, so effectively the QoS values are only updated for devices in suspend that should not have been suspended in the first place. In all of the other cases, the QoS values taken into account are the effective ones from the time before the device has been suspended, so generally devices need to be resumed and suspended again for new QoS values to take effect anyway. Thus evaluating dev_update_qos_constraint() in those two places doesn't make sense at all, so drop it. Second, initialize effective_constraint_ns to 0 ("no constraint") rather than to (-1) ("no suspend"), which makes more sense in general and in case effective_constraint_ns is never updated (the device is in suspend all the time or it is never suspended) it doesn't affect the device's parent and so on. Finally, rework default_suspend_ok() to explicitly handle the "no restriction" and "no suspend" special cases. Signed-off-by: Rafael J. To enable this, currently each PM Domain or driver has to provide its own gpd_dev_ops.active_wakeup() callback. Introduce a new flag GENPD_FLAG_ACTIVE_WAKEUP to consolidate this. If specified, all slave devices configured as wakeup sources will be kept active during system suspend. PM Domains that need more fine-grained controls, based on the slave device, can still provide their own callbacks, as before. This patch enhances the genpd core to support such platforms. The performance levels (within the genpd core) are identified by positive integer values, a lower value represents lower performance state. This patch adds a new genpd API, which is called by user drivers (like OPP framework): - int dev_pm_genpd_set_performance_state(struct device *dev, unsigned int state); This updates the performance state constraint of the device on its PM domain. On success, the genpd will have its performance state set to a value which is >= "state" passed to this routine. The genpd core calls the genpd->set_performance_state() callback, if implemented, else -ENODEV is returned to the caller. The PM domain drivers need to implement the following callback if they want to support performance states. - int (*set_performance_state)(struct generic_pm_domain *genpd, unsigned int state); This is called internally by the genpd core on several occasions. The genpd core passes the genpd pointer and the aggregate of the performance states of the devices supported by that genpd to this callback. This callback must update the performance state of the genpd (in a platform dependent way). The power domains can avoid supplying above callback, if they don't support setting performance-states. Currently we aren't propagating performance state changes of a subdomain to its masters as we don't have hardware that needs it right now. Over that, the performance states of subdomain and its masters may not have one-to-one mapping and would require additional information. We can get back to this once we have hardware that needs it. This is stored in sugov_cpu->cpu. The value is set in sugov_register() but we clear it in sugov_start() which leads to always looking at the utilization of CPU0 instead of the correct one. Fix this by consolidating the initialization code into sugov_start(). This is a silent failure which can corrupt memory in unexpected places. On x86, the bytes of data being overwritten by relocations are always initialized to zero beforehand. Use that knowledge to add sanity checks to detect such cases before they corrupt memory. The reason I removed the leave_mm() calls in question is because the heuristic wasn't needed after that patch. With the original version of my PCID series, we never flushed a "lazy cpu" (i.e. a CPU running kernel thread) due a flush on the loaded mm. Unfortunately, that caused architectural issues, so now I've reinstated these flushes on non-PCID systems in: commit b956575bed91 ("x86/mm: Flush more aggressively in lazy TLB mode"). That, in turn, gives us a power management and occasionally performance regression as compared to old kernels: a process that goes into a deep idle state on a given CPU and gets its mm flushed due to activity on a different CPU will wake the idle CPU. Reinstate the old ugly heuristic: if a CPU goes into ACPI C3 or an intel_idle state that is likely to cause a TLB flush gets its mm switched to init_mm before going idle. FWIW, this heuristic is lousy. Whether we should change CR3 before idle isn't a good hint except insofar as the performance hit is a bit lower if the TLB is getting flushed by the idle code anyway. What we really want to know is whether we anticipate being idle long enough that the mm is likely to be flushed before we wake up. This is more a matter of the expected latency than the idle state that gets chosen. This heuristic also completely fails on systems that don't know whether the TLB will be flushed (e.g. AMD systems?). OTOH it may be a bit obsolete anyway -- PCID systems don't presently benefit from this heuristic at all. We also shouldn't do this callback from innermost bit of the idle code due to the RCU nastiness it causes. All the information need is available before rcu_idle_enter() needs to happen. After investigating, I found the crash only happens when sample is of zero length symbol. Powerpc kernel has many such symbols which does not contain length details in vmlinux binary and thus start and end addresses of such symbols are same. Structure struct sym_hist { u64 nr_samples; u64 period; struct sym_hist_entry addr[0]; }; has last member 'addr[]' of size zero. 'addr[]' is an array of addresses that belongs to one symbol (function). If function consist of 100 instructions, 'addr' points to an array of 100 'struct sym_hist_entry' elements. For zero length symbol, it points to the *empty* array, i.e. no members in the array and thus offset 0 is also invalid for such array. static int __symbol__inc_addr_samples(...) { ... offset = addr - sym->start; h = annotation__histogram(notes, evidx); h->nr_samples++; h->addr[offset].nr_samples++; h->period += sample->period; h->addr[offset].period += sample->period; ... } Here, when 'addr' is same as 'sym->start', 'offset' becomes 0, which is valid for normal symbols but *invalid* for zero length symbols and thus updating h->addr[offset] causes memory corruption. Fix this by adding one dummy element for zero length symbols. This problem happened before, and was partially fixed with: 3d1e236022cc ("objtool: Prevent GCC from merging annotate_unreachable()") That commit tried to ensure that each instance of the annotate_unreachable() inline asm statement has a unique label. It used the __LINE__ macro to generate the label number. However, even the line number isn't necessarily unique when used in an inline function with multiple callers (in this case, __alloc_pages_node()'s use of VM_BUG_ON). The reason for this is: The watchdog functions are serialized via the watchdog_mutex and cpu hotplug locking, but the enable of the perf based watchdog happens in context of the unpark callback of the smpboot thread. But that unpark function is not synchronous inside the locking. The unparking of the thread just wakes it up and leaves so there is no guarantee when the thread is executing. If it starts running _before_ the cleanup happened then it will create a event and overwrite the dead event pointer. The new event is then cleaned up because the event is marked dead. lock(watchdog_mutex); lockup_detector_reconfigure(); cpus_read_lock(); stop(); park() update(); start(); unpark() cpus_read_unlock(); thread runs() overwrite dead event ptr cleanup(); free new event, which is active inside perf.... unlock(watchdog_mutex); The park side is safe as that actually waits for the thread to reach parked state. Commit a33d44843d45 removed the protection against this kind of scenario under the stupid assumption that the hotplug serialization and the watchdog_mutex cover everything. Bring it back. Fix it by using inc_not_zero() and simply retrying the loop when we fail to get a refcount. In that case put_pi_state() should remove the entry from the list.
