* futex: Add sys_futex_wait()peterz@infradead.org2023-09-211-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | To complement sys_futex_waitv()/wake(), add sys_futex_wait(). This syscall implements what was previously known as FUTEX_WAIT_BITSET except it uses 'unsigned long' for the value and bitmask arguments, takes timespec and clockid_t arguments for the absolute timeout and uses FUTEX2 flags. The 'unsigned long' allows FUTEX2_SIZE_U64 on 64bit platforms. Masahiro Yamada made some clean-up in the build system to address reports by the 0day bot. The most notable changes come from Artur Rojek who addressed a number of issues in the DMA code, in particular a fix for the DMA channel offset calculation that was introduced in in 7f47c7189b3e ("sh: dma: More legacy cpu dma chainsawing.") in 2012! | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | IRQ0 is no longer returned by platform_get_irq() and its ilk -- they now return -EINVAL instead. However, the kernel code supporting SH3/4-based SoCs still maps the IRQ #s starting at 0 -- modify that code to start the IRQ #s from 16 instead. The patch should mostly affect the AP-SH4A-3A/AP-SH4AD-0A boards as they indeed are using IRQ0 for the SMSC911x compatible Ethernet chip. The compiler option '-fstrict-flex-arrays=3' has been enabled globally, and has been in -next for the entire devel cycle. This changes compiler diagnostics (though mainly just -Warray-bounds which is disabled) and potential UBSAN_BOUNDS and FORTIFY _warning_ coverage. In other words, there are no new restrictions, just potentially new warnings. Any new FORTIFY warnings we've seen have been fixed (usually in their respective subsystem trees). For more details, see commit df8fc4e934c12b. The under-development compiler attribute __counted_by has been added so that we can start annotating flexible array members with their associated structure member that tracks the count of flexible array elements at run-time. It is possible (likely?) that the exact syntax of the attribute will change before it is finalized, but GCC and Clang are working together to sort it out. Any changes can be made to the macro while we continue to add annotations. As an example of that last case, I have a treewide commit waiting with such annotations found via Coccinelle: https://git.kernel.org/linus/adc5b3cb48a049563dc673f348eab7b6beba8a9b Also see commit dd06e72e68bcb4 for more details. | |/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | strlcpy() reads the entire source buffer first. This read may exceed the destination size limit. This is both inefficient and can lead to linear read overflows if a source string is not NUL-terminated [1]. In an effort to remove strlcpy() completely [2], replace strlcpy() here with strscpy(). No return values were used, so direct replacement is safe. There were some hacks to make that work, but the behavior was surprising as do_idle() doesn't expect an offlined CPU to return from the dead (in arch_cpu_idle_dead()). Now that Xen has been fixed, and the arch-specific implementations of arch_cpu_idle_dead() also don't return, give it a __noreturn attribute. This will cause the compiler to complain if an arch-specific implementation might return. It also improves code generation for both caller and callee. Also fixes the following warning: vmlinux.o: warning: objtool: do_idle+0x25f: unreachable instruction Reported-by: Paul E. McKenney <paulmck@kernel.org> Tested-by: Paul E. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The Store Queue code allocates a bitmap buffer with the size of multiple of sizeof(long) in sq_api_init(). While the buffer size is calculated correctly, the code uses the wrong element size to allocate the buffer which results in the allocated bitmap buffer being too small. Fix this by allocating the buffer with kcalloc() with element size sizeof(long) instead of kzalloc() whose elements size defaults to sizeof(char). Fixes: d7c30c682a27 ("sh: Store Queue API rework.") | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Current arch_cpu_idle() is called with IRQs disabled, but will return with IRQs enabled. However, the very first thing the generic code does after calling arch_cpu_idle() is raw_local_irq_disable(). This means that architectures that can idle with IRQs disabled end up doing a pointless 'enable-disable' dance. Therefore, push this IRQ disabling into the idle function, meaning that those architectures can avoid the pointless IRQ state flipping. This commit gets rid of the latter. Create vmlinux.a to collect all the objects that are unconditionally linked to vmlinux. The objects listed in head-y are moved to the head of vmlinux.a by using 'ar m'. With this, arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile can consistently use obj-y for builtin objects. There is no *.o that is directly linked to vmlinux. Drop unneeded code in scripts/clang-tools/gen_compile_commands.py. $(AR) mPi needs 'T' to workaround the llvm-ar bug. The most notable new feature here is the addition of the memcpy() overflow warning (under CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE), which is the next step on the path to killing the common class of "trivially detectable" buffer overflow conditions (i.e. on arrays with sizes known at compile time) that have resulted in many exploitable vulnerabilities over the years (e.g. BleedingTooth). This feature is expected to still have some undiscovered false positives. It's been in -next for a full development cycle and all the reported false positives have been fixed in their respective trees. All the known-bad code patterns we could find with Coccinelle are also either fixed in their respective trees or in flight. The commit message in commit 54d9469bc515 ("fortify: Add run-time WARN for cross-field memcpy()") for the feature has extensive details, but I'll repeat here that this is a warning _only_, and is not intended to actually block overflows (yet). The many patches fixing array sizes and struct members have been landing for several years now, and we're finally able to turn this on to find any remaining stragglers. Summary: Various fixes across several hardening areas: - loadpin: Fix verity target enforcement (Matthias Kaehlcke). - zero-call-used-regs: Add missing clobbers in paravirt (Bill Wendling). - CFI: clean up sparc function pointer type mismatches (Bart Van Assche). - Clang: Adjust compiler flag detection for various Clang changes (Sami Tolvanen, Kees Cook). - fortify: Fix warnings in arch-specific code in sh, ARM, and xen. Improvements to existing features: - testing: improve overflow KUnit test, introduce fortify KUnit test, add more coverage to LKDTM tests (Bart Van Assche, Kees Cook). - overflow: Relax overflow type checking for wider utility. Commit 40966e316f86 ("kthread: Ensure struct kthread is present for all kthreads") caused init and the user mode helper threads that call kernel_execve to have struct kthread allocated for them. This struct kthread going away during execve in turned made a use after free of struct kthread possible. Here, commit 343f4c49f243 ("kthread: Don't allocate kthread_struct for init and umh") is enough to fix the use after free and is simple enough to be backportable. The rest of the changes pass struct kernel_clone_args to clean things up and cause the code to make sense. In making init and the user mode helpers tasks purely user mode tasks I ran into two complications. The function task_tick_numa was detecting tasks without an mm by testing for the presence of PF_KTHREAD. The initramfs code in populate_initrd_image was using flush_delayed_fput to ensuere the closing of all it's file descriptors was complete, and flush_delayed_fput does not work in a userspace thread. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Add fn and fn_arg members into struct kernel_clone_args and test for them in copy_thread (instead of testing for PF_KTHREAD | PF_IO_WORKER). This allows any task that wants to be a user space task that only runs in kernel mode to use this functionality. The code on x86 is an exception and still retains a PF_KTHREAD test because x86 unlikely everything else handles kthreads slightly differently than user space tasks that start with a function. The functions that created tasks that start with a function have been updated to set ".fn" and ".fn_arg" instead of ".stack" and ".stack_size". |/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Patch series "Convert vmcore to use an iov_iter", v5. For some reason several people have been sending bad patches to fix compiler warnings in vmcore recently. Here's how it should be done. Compile-tested only on x86. As noted in the first patch, s390 should take this conversion a bit further, but I'm not inclined to do that work myself. This patch (of 3): Instead of passing in a 'buf' and 'userbuf' argument, pass in an iov_iter. s390 needs more work to pass the iov_iter down further, or refactor, but I'd be more comfortable if someone who can test on s390 did that work. It's more convenient to convert the whole of read_from_oldmem() to take an iov_iter at the same time, so rename it to read_from_oldmem_iter() and add a temporary read_from_oldmem() wrapper that creates an iov_iter. Much of that confusion was around task_work and TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL (which I have now decoupled making the semantics clearer). For people who don't know tracehook.h is a vestiage of an attempt to implement uprobes like functionality that was never fully merged, and was later superseeded by uprobes when uprobes was merged. For many years now we have been removing what tracehook functionaly a little bit at a time.
