* Kconfig: rename HAS_IOPORT to HAS_IOPORT_MAPUwe Kleine-König2014-04-071-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | If the renamed symbol is defined lib/iomap.c implements ioport_map and ioport_unmap and currently (nearly) all platforms define the port accessor functions outb/inb and friend unconditionally. So HAS_IOPORT_MAP is the better name for this. Consequently NO_IOPORT is renamed to NO_IOPORT_MAP. The motivation for this change is to reintroduce a symbol HAS_IOPORT that signals if outb/int et al are available. I will address that at least one merge window later though to keep surprises to a minimum and catch new introductions of (HAS|NO)_IOPORT. The changes in this commit were done using: $ git grep -l -E '(NO|HAS)_IOPORT' | xargs perl -p -i -e 's/\b((?:CONFIG_)?(?:NO|HAS)_IOPORT)\b/$1_MAP/' Signed-off-by: Uwe Kleine-König <u.kleine-koenig@pengutronix.de> Acked-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
* mm: per-thread vma cachingDavidlohr Bueso2014-04-071-1/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch is a continuation of efforts trying to optimize find_vma(), avoiding potentially expensive rbtree walks to locate a vma upon faults. The original approach (https://lkml.org/lkml/2013/11/1/410), where the largest vma was also cached, ended up being too specific and random, thus further comparison with other approaches were needed. There are two things to consider when dealing with this, the cache hit rate and the latency of find_vma(). Improving the hit-rate does not necessarily translate in finding the vma any faster, as the overhead of any fancy caching schemes can be too high to consider. We currently cache the last used vma for the whole address space, which provides a nice optimization, reducing the total cycles in find_vma() by up to 250%, for workloads with good locality. On the other hand, this simple scheme is pretty much useless for workloads with poor locality. Analyzing ebizzy runs shows that, no matter how many threads are running, the mmap_cache hit rate is less than 2%, and in many situations below 1%. The proposed approach is to replace this scheme with a small per-thread cache, maximizing hit rates at a very low maintenance cost. Invalidations are performed by simply bumping up a 32-bit sequence number. The only expensive operation is in the rare case of a seq number overflow, where all caches that share the same address space are flushed. Upon a miss, the proposed replacement policy is based on the page number that contains the virtual address in question. Concretely, the following results are seen on an 80 core, 8 socket x86-64 box: 1) System bootup: Most programs are single threaded, so the per-thread scheme does improve ~50% hit rate by just adding a few more slots to the cache. +----------------+----------+------------------+ | caching scheme | hit-rate | cycles (billion) | +----------------+----------+------------------+ | baseline | 50.61% | 19.90 | | patched | 73.45% | 13.58 | +----------------+----------+------------------+ 2) Kernel build: This one is already pretty good with the current approach as we're dealing with good locality. +----------------+----------+------------------+ | caching scheme | hit-rate | cycles (billion) | +----------------+----------+------------------+ | baseline | 75.28% | 11.03 | | patched | 88.09% | 9.31 | +----------------+----------+------------------+ 3) Oracle 11g Data Mining (4k pages): Similar to the kernel build workload. +----------------+----------+------------------+ | caching scheme | hit-rate | cycles (billion) | +----------------+----------+------------------+ | baseline | 70.66% | 17.14 | | patched | 91.15% | 12.57 | +----------------+----------+------------------+ 4) Ebizzy: There's a fair amount of variation from run to run, but this approach always shows nearly perfect hit rates, while baseline is just about non-existent. The amounts of cycles can fluctuate between anywhere from ~60 to ~116 for the baseline scheme, but this approach reduces it considerably. For instance, with 80 threads: +----------------+----------+------------------+ | caching scheme | hit-rate | cycles (billion) | +----------------+----------+------------------+ | baseline | 1.06% | 91.54 | | patched | 99.97% | 14.18 | +----------------+----------+------------------+ [akpm@linux-foundation.org: fix nommu build, per Davidlohr] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: document vmacache_valid() logic] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: attempt to untangle header files] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: add vmacache_find() BUG_ON] [hughd@google.com: add vmacache_valid_mm() (from Oleg)] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: coding-style fixes] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: adjust and enhance comments] Signed-off-by: Davidlohr Bueso <davidlohr@hp.com> Reviewed-by: Rik van Riel <riel@redhat.com> Acked-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org> Reviewed-by: Michel Lespinasse <walken@google.com> Cc: Oleg Nesterov <oleg@redhat.com> Tested-by: Hugh Dickins <hughd@google.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

* | mm, show_mem: remove SHOW_MEM_FILTER_PAGE_COUNTMel Gorman2014-01-211-3/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Commit 4b59e6c47309 ("mm, show_mem: suppress page counts in non-blockable contexts") introduced SHOW_MEM_FILTER_PAGE_COUNT to suppress PFN walks on large memory machines. Commit c78e93630d15 ("mm: do not walk all of system memory during show_mem") avoided a PFN walk in the generic show_mem helper which removes the requirement for SHOW_MEM_FILTER_PAGE_COUNT in that case. This patch removes PFN walkers from the arch-specific implementations that report on a per-node or per-zone granularity. ARM and unicore32 still do a PFN walk as they report memory usage on each bank which is a much finer granularity where the debugging information may still be of use. As the remaining arches doing PFN walks have relatively small amounts of memory, this patch simply removes SHOW_MEM_FILTER_PAGE_COUNT. |/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | We're going to be adding a few new barrier primitives, and in order to avoid endless duplication make more agressive use of asm-generic/barrier.h. Change the asm-generic/barrier.h such that it allows partial barrier definitions and fills out the rest with defaults. There are a few architectures (m32r, m68k) that could probably do away with their barrier.h file entirely but are kept for now due to their unconventional nop() implementation. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Unlike global OOM handling, memory cgroup code will invoke the OOM killer in any OOM situation because it has no way of telling faults occuring in kernel context - which could be handled more gracefully - from user-triggered faults. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Kernel faults are expected to handle OOM conditions gracefully (gup, uaccess etc.), so they should never invoke the OOM killer. | * | dump_stack: unify debug information printed by show_regs()Tejun Heo2013-04-301-5/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | show_regs() is inherently arch-dependent but it does make sense to print generic debug information and some archs already do albeit in slightly different forms. This patch introduces a generic function to print debug information from show_regs() so that different archs print out the same information and it's much easier to modify what's printed. show_regs_print_info() prints out the same debug info as dump_stack() does plus task and thread_info pointers. * Archs which didn't print debug info now do. alpha, arc, blackfin, c6x, cris, frv, h8300, hexagon, ia64, m32r, metag, microblaze, mn10300, openrisc, parisc, score, sh64, sparc, um, xtensa * Already prints debug info. Replaced with show_regs_print_info(). The printed information is superset of what used to be there. arm, arm64, avr32, mips, powerpc, sh32, tile, unicore32, x86 * s390 is special in that it used to print arch-specific information along with generic debug info. Heiko and Martin think that the arch-specific extra isn't worth keeping s390 specfic implementation. Converted to use the generic version. Note that now all archs print the debug info before actual register dumps. An example BUG() dump follows. kernel BUG at /work/os/work/kernel/workqueue.c:4841! invalid opcode: 0000 [#1] PREEMPT SMP DEBUG_PAGEALLOC Modules linked in: CPU: 0 PID: 1 Comm: swapper/0 Not tainted 3.9.0-rc1-work+ #7 Hardware name: empty empty/S3992, BIOS 080011 10/26/2007 task: ffff88007c85e040 ti: ffff88007c860000 task.ti: ffff88007c860000 RIP: 0010:[<ffffffff8234a07e>] [<ffffffff8234a07e>] init_workqueues+0x4/0x6 RSP: 0000:ffff88007c861ec8 EFLAGS: 00010246 RAX: ffff88007c861fd8 RBX: ffffffff824466a8 RCX: 0000000000000001 RDX: 0000000000000046 RSI: 0000000000000001 RDI: ffffffff8234a07a RBP: ffff88007c861ec8 R08: 0000000000000000 R09: 0000000000000000 R10: 0000000000000001 R11: 0000000000000000 R12: ffffffff8234a07a R13: 0000000000000000 R14: 0000000000000000 R15: 0000000000000000 FS: 0000000000000000(0000) GS:ffff88007dc00000(0000) knlGS:0000000000000000 CS: 0010 DS: 0000 ES: 0000 CR0: 000000008005003b CR2: ffff88015f7ff000 CR3: 00000000021f1000 CR4: 00000000000007f0 DR0: 0000000000000000 DR1: 0000000000000000 DR2: 0000000000000000 DR3: 0000000000000000 DR6: 00000000ffff0ff0 DR7: 0000000000000400 Stack: ffff88007c861ef8 ffffffff81000312 ffffffff824466a8 ffff88007c85e650 0000000000000003 0000000000000000 ffff88007c861f38 ffffffff82335e5d ffff88007c862080 ffffffff8223d8c0 ffff88007c862080 ffffffff81c47760 Call Trace: [<ffffffff81000312>] do_one_initcall+0x122/0x170 [<ffffffff82335e5d>] kernel_init_freeable+0x9b/0x1c8 [<ffffffff81c47760>] ? rest_init+0x140/0x140 [<ffffffff81c4776e>] kernel_init+0xe/0xf0 [<ffffffff81c6be9c>] ret_from_fork+0x7c/0xb0 [<ffffffff81c47760>] ? rest_init+0x140/0x140 ... v2: Typo fix in x86-32. v3: CPU number dropped from show_regs_print_info() as dump_stack_print_info() has been updated to print it. s390 specific implementation dropped as requested by s390 maintainers. | * | dump_stack: consolidate dump_stack() implementations and unify their behaviorsTejun Heo2013-04-301-6/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Both dump_stack() and show_stack() are currently implemented by each architecture. show_stack(NULL, NULL) dumps the backtrace for the current task as does dump_stack(). On some archs, dump_stack() prints extra information - pid, utsname and so on - in addition to the backtrace while the two are identical on other archs. The usages in arch-independent code of the two functions indicate show_stack(NULL, NULL) should print out bare backtrace while dump_stack() is used for debugging purposes when something went wrong, so it does make sense to print additional information on the task which triggered dump_stack(). There's no reason to require archs to implement two separate but mostly identical functions. It leads to unnecessary subtle information. This patch expands the dummy fallback dump_stack() implementation in lib/dump_stack.c such that it prints out debug information (taken from x86) and invokes show_stack(NULL, NULL) and drops arch-specific dump_stack() implementations in all archs except blackfin. Blackfin's dump_stack() does something wonky that I don't understand. Debug information can be printed separately by calling dump_stack_print_info() so that arch-specific dump_stack() implementation can still emit the same debug information. This is used in blackfin. This patch brings the following behavior changes. * On some archs, an extra level in backtrace for show_stack() could be printed. This is because the top frame was determined in dump_stack() on those archs while generic dump_stack() can't do that reliably. It can be compensated by inlining dump_stack() but not sure whether that'd be necessary. * Most archs didn't use to print debug info on dump_stack(). They do now. An example WARN dump follows. WARNING: at kernel/workqueue.c:4841 init_workqueues+0x35/0x505() Hardware name: empty Modules linked in: CPU: 0 PID: 1 Comm: swapper/0 Not tainted 3.9.0-rc1-work+ #9 0000000000000009 ffff88007c861e08 ffffffff81c614dc ffff88007c861e48 ffffffff8108f50f ffffffff82228240 0000000000000040 ffffffff8234a03c 0000000000000000 0000000000000000 0000000000000000 ffff88007c861e58 Call Trace: [<ffffffff81c614dc>] dump_stack+0x19/0x1b [<ffffffff8108f50f>] warn_slowpath_common+0x7f/0xc0 [<ffffffff8108f56a>] warn_slowpath_null+0x1a/0x20 [<ffffffff8234a071>] init_workqueues+0x35/0x505 ... v2: CPU number added to the generic debug info as requested by s390 folks and dropped the s390 specific dump_stack(). This loses %ksp from the debug message which the maintainers think isn't important enough to keep the s390-specific dump_stack() implementation. dump_stack_print_info() is moved to kernel/printk.c from lib/dump_stack.c. Because linkage is per objecct file, dump_stack_print_info() living in the same lib file as generic dump_stack() means that archs which implement custom dump_stack() - at this point, only blackfin - can't use dump_stack_print_info() as that will bring in the generic version of dump_stack() too. v1 The v1 patch broke build on blackfin due to this issue. Many SMP system's cpufreq drivers take care of this in individual drivers but the best place for this code is in cpufreq core.
