So it hasn't been so useful for drivers. We have only one user of the API in tree. Unlikely out-of-tree drivers use the API. Even if we fix dma_is_consistent() in some architectures, it doesn't look useful at all. It was invented long ago for some old systems that can't allocate coherent memory at all. It's better to export only APIs that are definitely necessary for drivers. Let's remove this API. Architectures define it as ARCH_KMALLOC_MINALIGN (it's used to make sure that malloc'ed buffer is DMA-safe; the buffer doesn't share a cache with the others). So we can unify dma_get_cache_alignment implementations. This patch: dma_get_cache_alignment() needs to know if an architecture defines ARCH_KMALLOC_MINALIGN or not (needs to know if architecture has DMA alignment restriction). However, slab.h define ARCH_KMALLOC_MINALIGN if architectures doesn't define it. Let's rename ARCH_KMALLOC_MINALIGN to ARCH_DMA_MINALIGN. ARCH_KMALLOC_MINALIGN is used only in the internals of slab/slob/slub (except for crypto). Paraphrased from the 1989 BSD patch by David Borman @ cray.com: These are the changes needed for the kernel to support LINEMODE in the server. There is a new bit in the termios local flag word, EXTPROC. When this bit is set, several aspects of the terminal driver are disabled. Input line editing, character echo, and mapping of signals are all disabled. This allows the telnetd to turn off these functions when in linemode, but still keep track of what state the user wants the terminal to be in. New ioctl: TIOCSIG Generate a signal to processes in the current process group of the pty. There is a new mode for packet driver, the TIOCPKT_IOCTL bit. When packet mode is turned on in the pty, and the EXTPROC bit is set, then whenever the state of the pty is changed, the next read on the master side of the pty will have the TIOCPKT_IOCTL bit set. This allows the process on the server side of the pty to know when the state of the terminal has changed; it can then issue the appropriate ioctl to retrieve the new state. Since the original BSD patches accompanied the source code for telnet I've left that reference here, but obviously the feature is useful for any remote terminal protocol, including ssh. The corresponding feature has existed in the BSD tty driver since 1989. We do this via make_coherent() by making the pages uncacheable. This used to work fine, until we allowed highmem with highpte - we now have a page table which is mapped as required, and is not available for modification via update_mmu_cache(). Ralf Beache suggested getting rid of the PTE value passed to update_mmu_cache(): On MIPS update_mmu_cache() calls __update_tlb() which walks pagetables to construct a pointer to the pte again. Passing a pte_t * is much more elegant. Maybe we might even replace the pte argument with the pte_t? Ben Herrenschmidt would also like the pte pointer for PowerPC: Passing the ptep in there is exactly what I want. I want that -instead- of the PTE value, because I have issue on some ppc cases, for I$/D$ coherency, where set_pte_at() may decide to mask out the _PAGE_EXEC. So, pass in the mapped page table pointer into update_mmu_cache(), and remove the PTE value, updating all implementations and call sites to suit. This value was exported via a SOL_PACKET level cmsg. AFter I completed that work it was requested that this feature be generalized so that any datagram oriented socket could make use of this option. As such I've created this patch, It creates a new SOL_SOCKET level option called SO_RXQ_OVFL, which when enabled exports a SOL_SOCKET level cmsg that reports the nubmer of times the sk_receive_queue overflowed between any two given frames. It also augments the AF_PACKET protocol to take advantage of this new feature (as it previously did not touch sk->sk_drops, which this patch uses to record the overflow count). Tested successfully by me. Notes: 1) Unlike my previous patch, this patch simply records the sk_drops value, which is not a number of drops between packets, but rather a total number of drops. Deltas must be computed in user space. 2) While this patch currently works with datagram oriented protocols, it will also be accepted by non-datagram oriented protocols. I'm not sure if thats agreeable to everyone, but my argument in favor of doing so is that, for those protocols which aren't applicable to this option, sk_drops will always be zero, and reporting no drops on a receive queue that isn't used for those non-participating protocols seems reasonable to me. This is accomplished by using a file on the internal vfsmount. MAP_HUGETLB is a modifier of MAP_ANONYMOUS and so must be specified with it. The region will behave the same as a MAP_ANONYMOUS region using small pages. The patch also adds the MAP_STACK flag, which was previously defined only on some architectures but not on others. Since MAP_STACK is meant to be a hint only, architectures can define it without assigning a specific meaning to it.
