Indeed, "status" is a bit vague: it can easily be confused with the connected/disconnected status of the connector. This function has nothing to do with connected/disconnected: it merely sends a notification that a connector's property has changed (e.g. HDCP, privacy screen, etc). The link will be created only if the firmware is able to describe the connection beween the two connectors. Currently, even if a display uses a USB Type-C port, there is no way for the userspace to find which port is used for which display. With the symlink, display information would be accessible from Type-C connectors and port information would be accessible from DRM connectors. Associating the two subsystems, userspace would have potential to expose and utilize more complex information. ChromeOS intend to use this information for metrics collection. For example, we want to tell which port is deriving which displays. Also, combined with USB PD information, we can tell whether user is charging their device through display. Chromium patch for parsing the symlink from the kernel is at http://crrev.com/c/4317207. We already have a framework in typec port-mapper.c where it goes through component devices and runs the bind functions for those with matching _PLD (physical location of device). https://elixir.bootlin.com/linux/v5.18.1/source/drivers/usb/typec/ port-mapper.c Since _PLD is ACPI specific field, this linking would only work on ACPI x86 as long as _PLD field for Type-C connectors and DRM connectors are correctly added to the firmware. Currently, even if we can derive the connector id from modeset, we do not have a way to find the corresponding connector's syspath. This is helpful when determining the root connector of MST tree. When a tree of multiple MST hub is connected to the system, modeset describes the tree in the PATH blob. ChromeOS intend to use this information for metrics collection. For example, we want to tell which port is deriving which displays even with a MST hub. The "big" change in here is the addition of a new macro, container_of_const() that will preserve the "const-ness" of a pointer passed into it. The "problem" of the current container_of() macro is that if you pass in a "const *", out of it can comes a non-const pointer unless you specifically ask for it. For many usages, we want to preserve the "const" attribute by using the same call. For a specific example, this series changes the kobj_to_dev() macro to use it, allowing it to be used no matter what the const value is. This prevents every subsystem from having to declare 2 different individual macros (i.e. kobj_const_to_dev() and kobj_to_dev()) and having the compiler enforce the const value at build time, which having 2 macros would not do either. The driver for all of this have been discussions with the Rust kernel developers as to how to properly mark driver core, and kobject, objects as being "non-mutable". The changes to the kobject and driver core in this pull request are the result of that, as there are lots of paths where kobjects and device pointers are not modified at all, so marking them as "const" allows the compiler to enforce this. So, a nice side affect of the Rust development effort has been already to clean up the driver core code to be more obvious about object rules. All of this has been bike-shedded in quite a lot of detail on lkml with different names and implementations resulting in the tiny version we have in here, much better than my original proposal. Lots of subsystem maintainers have acked the changes as well. The adding of the fwnode pointer allows drivers to associate a fwnode that represents a connector with that connector. When the new fwnode pointer points to an ACPI-companion, then the new acpi_bus_type will cause the ACPI subsys to bind the device instantiated for the connector with the fwnode by calling acpi_bind_one(). This will result in a firmware_node symlink under /sys/class/card#-<connecter-name>/ which helps to verify that the fwnode-s and connectors are properly matched. For example: ls -l /sys/class/drm/card0-HDMI-A-1/ddc lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Jun 24 10:42 /sys/class/drm/card0-HDMI-A-1/ddc \ -> ../../../../soc/13880000.i2c/i2c-2 This makes it easy for user to associate a display with its ddc adapter and use e.g. ddcutil to control the chosen monitor. This patch adds an i2c_adapter pointer to struct drm_connector. Particular drivers can then use it instead of using their own private instance. If a connector contains a ddc, then create a symbolic link in sysfs. However, as it turns out, they're each used just once and don't bring any benefit. They're also grossly mis-named and lack name-spacing. This patch inlines them, or moves them into drm_internal.h as appropriate: - CORE_AUTHOR and CORE_DESC are inlined into corresponding MODULE_*() macros. It's just confusing having to follow 2 pointers when trying to find the definition of these fields. Grep'ping for MODULE_AUTHOR() should reveal the full information, if there's no strong reason not to. - CORE_NAME, CORE_DATE, CORE_MAJOR, CORE_MINOR, and CORE_PATCHLEVEL are inlined into the sysfs 'version' attribute. They're stripped everywhere else (which is just some printk() statements). CORE_NAME just doesn't make *any* sense, as we hard-code it in many places, anyway. The other constants are outdated and just serve binary-compatibility purposes. Hence, inline them in 'version' sysfs attribute (we might even try dropping it..). - DRM_IF_MAJOR and DRM_IF_MINOR are moved into drm_internal.h as they're only used by the global ioctl handlers. Furthermore, versioning interfaces breaks backports and as such is deprecated, anyway. We just keep them for historic reasons. I doubt anyone will ever modify them again. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The PM core introduced the ability to keep devices runtime suspended during the entire system suspend/resume process with commit aae4518b3124 ("PM / sleep: Mechanism to avoid resuming runtime-suspended devices unnecessarily"). Before this so-called "direct-complete" procedure was introduced, devices were always runtime resumed only to be immediately put to sleep again using their ->suspend hook. Direct-complete is enabled by returning a positive value from the ->prepare hook. The PCI core usually does this automatically. Direct-complete is only available for a device if all children use it as well. Currently we cannot support direct-complete for DRM drivers because the DRM core automatically registers multiple DRM minors which belong to device class drm_class, and drm_class uses a struct dev_pm_ops which lacks the ->prepare callback. While this could be solved by adding the missing ->prepare callback, closer inspection shows that there are no DRM drivers left which declare the legacy ->suspend and ->resume callbacks in their drm_driver struct. The last ones to remove them were i915 with commit 1751fcf9f92e ("drm/i915: Fix module initialisation, v2.") and exynos with commit e7fefb1d5af5 ("drm/exynos: remove legacy ->suspend()/resume()"). Consequently the struct dev_pm_ops of drm_class is now dead code. Remove it. If no dev_pm_ops is declared for a device, the PM core automatically enables direct-complete for it, thereby making that mechanism available to the parent DRM PCI devices. Since it would be real work to fix up the locking (with atomic we're now chasing pointers when reading properties) and it seems unused lets just nuke this all. It's easier. Of course we'll keep the properties themselves, those are still exposed through the KMS ioctls.
