| * vga16fb: drop powerpc supportArnd Bergmann2023-10-171-8/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | I noticed that commit 0db5b61e0dc07 ("fbdev/vga16fb: Create EGA/VGA devices in sysfb code") broke vga16fb on non-x86 platforms, because the sysfb code never creates a vga-framebuffer device when screen_info.orig_video_isVGA is set to '1' instead of VIDEO_TYPE_VGAC. However, it turns out that the only architecture that has allowed building vga16fb in the past 20 years is powerpc, and this only worked on two 32-bit platforms and never on 64-bit powerpc. The last machine that actually used this was removed in linux-3.10, so this is all dead code and can be removed. The big-endian support in vga16fb.c could also be removed, but I'd just leave this in place. * | fbdev/vga16fb: Initialize fb_ops to fbdev I/O-memory helpersThomas Zimmermann2023-10-191-0/+2
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Initialize the instance of struct fb_ops with fbdev initializer macros for framebuffers in I/O address space. Set the read/write, draw and mmap callbacks to the correct implementation and avoid implicit defaults. Also select the necessary I/O helpers in Kconfig. Fbdev drivers sometimes rely on the callbacks being NULL for a default implementation to be invoked; hence requiring the I/O helpers to be built in any case. Setting all callbacks in all drivers explicitly will allow to make the I/O helpers optional. This benefits systems that do not use these functions. No functional changes. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The flag FBINFO_FLAG_DEFAULT is 0 and has no effect, as struct fbinfo.flags has been allocated to zero by framebuffer_alloc(). So do not set it. Flags should signal differences from the default values. After cleaning up all occurrences of FBINFO_DEFAULT, the token will be removed. v4: * clarify commit message (Geert, Dan) v2: * fix commit message (Miguel) Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Acked-by: Sam Ravnborg <sam@ravnborg.org> Cc: Jaya Kumar <jayalk@intworks.biz> Cc: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de> Cc: Peter Jones <pjones@redhat.com> Cc: Sascha Hauer <s.hauer@pengutronix.de> Cc: Pengutronix Kernel Team <kernel@pengutronix.de> Cc: Shawn Guo <shawnguo@kernel.org> Cc: Fabio Estevam <festevam@gmail.com> Cc: NXP Linux Team <linux-imx@nxp.com> Cc: Maik Broemme <mbroemme@libmpq.org> Cc: Jingoo Han <jingoohan1@gmail.com> Cc: Sudip Mukherjee <sudipm.mukherjee@gmail.com> Cc: Teddy Wang <teddy.wang@siliconmotion.com> Cc: Michal Januszewski <spock@gentoo.org> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20230715185343.7193-15-tzimmermann@suse.de
* fbdev: vga16fb: Convert to platform remove callback returning voidUwe Kleine-König2023-04-241-4/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is (mostly) ignored and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns void. Trivially convert this driver from always returning zero in the remove callback to the void returning variant. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Move the device-creation from vga16fb to sysfb code. The driver's videomode checks are independent from device creation, so move them into vga16fb's probe function. This will allow to create the module init/exit code automatically. | * video: vga16fb: Fix logic that checks for the display standardJavier Martinez Canillas2022-01-121-0/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The vga16fb framebuffer driver supports both Enhanced Graphics Adapter (EGA) and Video Graphics Array (VGA) 16 color graphic cards. But the logic to check whether the EGA or VGA standard are used is not correct. It just checks if screen_info.orig_video_isVGA is set, but it should check if is set to VIDEO_TYPE_VGAC instead. This means that it assumes to be VGA even if is set to VIDEO_TYPE_EGAC. All non-x86 architectures though treat orig_video_isVGA as a boolean so only do the change for x86 and keep the old logic for the other arches. |/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The vga16fb framebuffer driver only supports Enhanced Graphics Adapter (EGA) and Video Graphics Array (VGA) 16 color graphic cards. But it doesn't check if the adapter is one of those or if a VGA16 mode is used. This means that the driver will be probed even if a VESA BIOS Extensions (VBE) or Graphics Output Protocol (GOP) interface is used. This issue has been present for a long time but it was only exposed by commit d391c5827107 ("drivers/firmware: move x86 Generic System Framebuffers support") since the platform device registration to match the {vesa, efi}fb drivers is done later as a consequence of that change. All non-x86 architectures though treat orig_video_isVGA as a boolean so only do the supported video mode check for x86 and not for other arches. * treewide: remove editor modelines and cruftMasahiro Yamada2021-05-071-10/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The section "19) Editor modelines and other cruft" in Documentation/process/coding-style.rst clearly says, "Do not include any of these in source files." I recently receive a patch to explicitly add a new one. Let's do treewide cleanups, otherwise some people follow the existing code and attempt to upstream their favoriate editor setups. It is even nicer if scripts/checkpatch.pl can check it. If we like to impose coding style in an editor-independent manner, I think editorconfig (patch [1]) is a saner solution. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Now that the fbops member of struct fb_info is const, we can start making the ops const as well. This does not cover all drivers; some actually modify the fbops struct, for example to adjust for different configurations, and others do more involved things that I'd rather not touch in practically obsolete drivers. The drivers/video directory is a mess. It contains generic video related files, directories for backlight, console, linux logo, lots of fbdev device drivers, fbdev framework files. Make some order into the chaos by creating drivers/video/fbdev directory, and move all fbdev related files there. No functionality is changed, although I guess it is possible that some subtle Makefile build order related issue could be created by this patch.
