* autofs: remove left-over autofs4 stubsLinus Torvalds2018-06-112-55/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | There's no need to retain the fs/autofs4 directory for backward compatibility. Adding an AUTOFS4_FS fragment to the autofs Kconfig and a module alias for autofs4 is sufficient for almost all cases. Not keeping fs/autofs4 remnants will prevent "insmod <path>/autofs4/autofs4.ko" from working but this shouldn't be used in automation scripts rather than modprobe(8). There were some comments about things to look out for with the module rename in the fs/autofs4/Kconfig that is removed by this patch, see the commit patch if you are interested. One potential problem with this change is that when the fs/autofs/Kconfig fragment for AUTOFS4_FS is removed any AUTOFS4_FS entries will be removed from the kernel config, resulting in no autofs file system being built if there is no AUTOFS_FS entry also. This would have also happened if the fs/autofs4 remnants had remained and is most likely to be a problem with automated builds. Please check your build configurations before the removal which will occur after the next couple of kernel releases. * autofs: comment on selinux changes needed for module autoloadIan Kent2018-06-071-0/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Due to the autofs4 module using a file system type name of autofs different from the module containing directory name autoload did not function properly. To work around this kernel configurations have often elected to build the module into the kernel. This can result in selinux policies that prohibit autoloading of the autofs module which need to be changed. Add a comment about this to "possible changes" section of the autofs4 module help. * autofs: mount point create should honour passed in modeIan Kent2018-04-201-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The autofs file system mkdir inode operation blindly sets the created directory mode to S_IFDIR | 0555, ingoring the passed in mode, which can cause selinux dac_override denials. But the function also checks if the caller is the daemon (as no-one else should be able to do anything here) so there's no point in not honouring the passed in mode, allowing the daemon to set appropriate mode when required. * fs: add ksys_close() wrapper; remove in-kernel calls to sys_close()Dominik Brodowski2018-04-021-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Using the ksys_close() wrapper allows us to get rid of in-kernel calls to the sys_close() syscall. The ksys_ prefix denotes that this function is meant as a drop-in replacement for the syscall. In particular, it uses the same calling convention as sys_close(), with one subtle difference: The few places which checked the return value did not care about the return value re-writing in sys_close(), so simply use a wrapper around __close_fd(). This patch is part of a series which removes in-kernel calls to syscalls. On this basis, the syscall entry path can be streamlined. * | autofs: revert "autofs: take more care to not update last_used on path walk"Ian Kent2017-11-291-11/+6
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | While commit 092a53452bb7 ("autofs: take more care to not update last_used on path walk") helped (partially) resolve a problem where automounts were not expiring due to aggressive accesses from user space it has a side effect for very large environments. This change helps with the expire problem by making the expire more aggressive but, for very large environments, that means more mount requests from clients. When there are a lot of clients that can mean fairly significant server load increases. It turns out I put the last_used in this position to solve this very problem and failed to update my own thinking of the autofs expire policy. So the patch being reverted introduces a regression which should be fixed. * autofs: don't fail mount for transient errorNeilBrown2017-11-171-1/+14
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently if the autofs kernel module gets an error when writing to the pipe which links to the daemon, then it marks the whole moutpoint as catatonic, and it will stop working. It is possible that the error is transient. This can happen if the daemon is slow and more than 16 requests queue up. If a subsequent process tries to queue a request, and is then signalled, the write to the pipe will return -ERESTARTSYS and autofs will take that as total failure. So change the code to assess -ERESTARTSYS and -ENOMEM as transient failures which only abort the current request, not the whole mountpoint. It isn't a crash or a data corruption, but having autofs mountpoints suddenly stop working is rather inconvenient. Ian said: : And given the problems with a half dozen (or so) user space applications : consuming large amounts of CPU under heavy mount and umount activity this : could happen more easily than we expect. * Fix up over-eager 'wait_queue_t' renamingLinus Torvalds2017-07-102-10/+10
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Commit ac6424b981bc ("sched/wait: Rename wait_queue_t => wait_queue_entry_t") had scripted the renaming incorrectly, and didn't actually check that the 'wait_queue_t' was a full token. As a result, it also triggered on 'wait_queue_token', and renamed that to 'wait_queue_entry_token' entry in the autofs4 packet structure definition too. That was entirely incorrect, and not intended. The end result built fine when building just the kernel - because everything had been renamed consistently there - but caused problems in user space because the "struct autofs_packet_missing" type is exported as part of the uapi. This scripts it all back again: git grep -lw wait_queue_entry_token | xargs sed -i 's/wait_queue_entry_token/wait_queue_token/g' and checks the end result. |/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Rename: wait_queue_t => wait_queue_entry_t 'wait_queue_t' was always a slight misnomer: its name implies that it's a "queue", but in reality it's a queue *entry*. The 'real' queue is the wait queue head, which had to carry the name. Start sorting this out by renaming it to 'wait_queue_entry_t'. This also allows the real structure name 'struct __wait_queue' to lose its double underscore and become 'struct wait_queue_entry', which is the more canonical nomenclature for such data types. * rcu: Separate the RCU synchronization types and APIs into ↵Ingo Molnar2017-03-021-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | <linux/rcupdate_wait.h> So rcupdate.h is a pretty complex header, in particular it includes <linux/completion.h> which includes <linux/wait.h> - creating a dependency that includes <linux/wait.h> in <linux/sched.h>, which prevents the isolation of <linux/sched.h> from the derived <linux/wait.h> header. Solve part of the problem by decoupling rcupdate.h from completions: this can be done by separating out the rcu_synchronize types and APIs, and updating their usage sites. Since this is a mostly RCU-internal types this will not just simplify <linux/sched.h>'s dependencies, but will make all the hundreds of .c files that include rcupdate.h but not completions or wait.h build faster. ( For rcutiny this means that two dependent APIs have to be uninlined, but that shouldn't be much of a problem as they are rare variants. ) Acked-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org> Cc: Mike Galbraith <efault@gmx.de> Cc: Paul E. * autofs: take more care to not update last_used on path walkIan Kent2017-02-271-6/+11
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | GUI environments seem to be becoming more agressive at scanning filesystems, to the point where autofs cannot expire mounts at all. This is one key reason the update of the autofs dentry info last_used field is done in the expire system when the dentry is seen to be in use. But somewhere along the way instances of the update has crept back into the autofs path walk functions which, with the more aggressive file access patterns, is preventing expiration. Changing the update in the path walk functions allows autofs to at least make progress in spite of frequent immediate re-mounts from file accesses. * fs: Better permission checking for submountsEric W. Biederman2017-02-021-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | To support unprivileged users mounting filesystems two permission checks have to be performed: a test to see if the user allowed to create a mount in the mount namespace, and a test to see if the user is allowed to access the specified filesystem. The automount case is special in that mounting the original filesystem grants permission to mount the sub-filesystems, to any user who happens to stumble across the their mountpoint and satisfies the ordinary filesystem permission checks. Attempting to handle the automount case by using override_creds almost works. It preserves the idea that permission to mount the original filesystem is permission to mount the sub-filesystem. Unfortunately using override_creds messes up the filesystems ordinary permission checks. Solve this by being explicit that a mount is a submount by introducing vfs_submount, and using it where appropriate. vfs_submount uses a new mount internal mount flags MS_SUBMOUNT, to let sget and friends know that a mount is a submount so they can take appropriate action. sget and sget_userns are modified to not perform any permission checks on submounts. follow_automount is modified to stop using override_creds as that has proven problemantic. do_mount is modified to always remove the new MS_SUBMOUNT flag so that we know userspace will never by able to specify it. autofs4 is modified to stop using current_real_cred that was put in there to handle the previous version of submount permission checking. cifs is modified to pass the mountpoint all of the way down to vfs_submount. debugfs is modified to pass the mountpoint all of the way down to trace_automount by adding a new parameter. To make this change easier a new typedef debugfs_automount_t is introduced to capture the type of the debugfs automount function. The direct mount expire needs the same treatment because to make autofs expires namespace aware may_umount_tree() needs to to use a similar method to may_umount() when checking if a mount tree is in use. This means may_umount_tree() will end up taking the namespace_sem for the check so the autofs direct mount expire won't be allowed to hold a spin lock over the check. * autofs: remove possibly misleading /* #define DEBUG */Tomohiro Kusumi2016-10-111-2/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Having this in autofs_i.h gives illusion that uncommenting this enables pr_debug(), but it doesn't enable all the pr_debug() in autofs because inclusion order matters. XFS has the same DEBUG macro in its core header fs/xfs/xfs.h, however XFS seems to have a rule to include this prior to other XFS headers as well as kernel headers. This is not the case with autofs, and DEBUG could be enabled via Makefile, so autofs should just get rid of this comment to make the code less confusing. It's a comment, so there is literally no functional difference.
