* [PATCH] remove set_wmb - arch removalSteven Rostedt2006-07-141-1/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | set_wmb should not be used in the kernel because it just confuses the code more and has no benefit. Since it is not currently used in the kernel this patch removes it so that new code does not include it. All archs define set_wmb(var, value) to do { var = value; wmb(); } while(0) except ia64 and sparc which use a mb() instead. But this is still moot since it is not used anyway. Hasn't been tested on any archs but x86 and x86_64 (and only compiled tested) Signed-off-by: Steven Rostedt <rostedt@goodmis.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

* | [AF_UNIX]: Datagram getpeersecCatherine Zhang2006-06-291-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch implements an API whereby an application can determine the label of its peer's Unix datagram sockets via the auxiliary data mechanism of recvmsg. Patch purpose: This patch enables a security-aware application to retrieve the security context of the peer of a Unix datagram socket. The application can then use this security context to determine the security context for processing on behalf of the peer who sent the packet. Patch design and implementation: The design and implementation is very similar to the UDP case for INET sockets. Basically we build upon the existing Unix domain socket API for retrieving user credentials. Linux offers the API for obtaining user credentials via ancillary messages (i.e., out of band/control messages that are bundled together with a normal message). To retrieve the security context, the application first indicates to the kernel such desire by setting the SO_PASSSEC option via getsockopt. Then the application retrieves the security context using the auxiliary data mechanism. An example server application for Unix datagram socket should look like this: toggle = 1; toggle_len = sizeof(toggle); setsockopt(sockfd, SOL_SOCKET, SO_PASSSEC, &toggle, &toggle_len); recvmsg(sockfd, &msg_hdr, 0); if (msg_hdr.msg_controllen > sizeof(struct cmsghdr)) { cmsg_hdr = CMSG_FIRSTHDR(&msg_hdr); if (cmsg_hdr->cmsg_len <= CMSG_LEN(sizeof(scontext)) && cmsg_hdr->cmsg_level == SOL_SOCKET && cmsg_hdr->cmsg_type == SCM_SECURITY) { memcpy(&scontext, CMSG_DATA(cmsg_hdr), sizeof(scontext)); } } sock_setsockopt is enhanced with a new socket option SOCK_PASSSEC to allow a server socket to receive security context of the peer. Testing: We have tested the patch by setting up Unix datagram client and server applications. We verified that the server can retrieve the security context using the auxiliary data mechanism of recvmsg. * | [PATCH] vgacon: make VGA_MAP_MEM take size, remove extra useBjorn Helgaas2006-06-221-1/+1
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | VGA_MAP_MEM translates to ioremap() on some architectures. It makes sense to do this to vga_vram_base, because we're going to access memory between vga_vram_base and vga_vram_end. But it doesn't really make sense to map starting at vga_vram_end, because we aren't going to access memory starting there. On ia64, which always has to be different, ioremapping vga_vram_end gives you something completely incompatible with ioremapped vga_vram_start, so vga_vram_size ends up being nonsense. As a bonus, we often know the size up front, so we can use ioremap() correctly, rather than giving it a zero size. Signed-off-by: Bjorn Helgaas <bjorn.helgaas@hp.com> Cc: "Antonino A. * [PATCH] m32r: Fix pt_regs for !COFNIG_ISA_DSP_LEVEL2 targetHirokazu Takata2006-04-193-15/+17
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This modification is required to fix debugging function for m32r targets with !CONFIG_ISA_DSP_LEVEL2, by unifying 'struct pt_regs' and 'struct sigcontext' size for all M32R ISA. Some m32r processor core with !CONFIG_ISA_DSP_LEVEL2 configuration has only single accumulator a0 (ex. VDEC2 core, M32102 core, etc.), the others with CONFIG_ISA_DSP_LEVEL2 has two accumulators, a0 and a1. This means there are two variations of thread context. So far, we reduced and changed stackframe size at a syscall for their context size. However, this causes a problem that a GDB for processors with CONFIG_ISA_DSP_LEVEL2 cannot be used for processors with !CONFIG_ISA_DSP_LEVEL2. From the viewpoint of GDB support, we should reduce such variation of stackframe size for simplicity. In this patch, dummy members are added to 'struct pt_regs' and 'struct sigcontext' to adjust their size for !CONFIG_ISA_DSP_LEVEL2. This modification is also a one step for a GDB update in future. Currently, on the m32r, GDB can access process's context by using ptrace functions in a simple way of register by register access. By unifying stackframe size, we have a possibility to make use of ptrace functions of not only a single register access but also block register access, PTRACE_{GETREGS,PUTREGS}. However, for this purpose, we might have to modify stackframe structure some more; for example, PSW (processor status word) register should be pre-processed before pushing to stack at a syscall, and so on. In this case, we must update carefully both kernel and GDB at a time... * [PATCH] Configurable NODES_SHIFTYasunori Goto2006-04-111-15/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Current implementations define NODES_SHIFT in include/asm-xxx/numnodes.h for each arch. Its definition is sometimes configurable. Indeed, ia64 defines 5 NODES_SHIFT values in the current git tree. But it looks a bit messy. SGI-SN2(ia64) system requires 1024 nodes, and the number of nodes already has been changeable by config. Suitable node's number may be changed in the future even if it is other architecture. So, I wrote configurable node's number. This patch set defines just default value for each arch which needs multi nodes except ia64. But, it is easy to change to configurable if necessary. On ia64 the number of nodes can be already configured in generic ia64 and SN2 config. But, NODES_SHIFT is defined for DIG64 and HP'S machine too. So, I changed it so that all platforms can be configured via CONFIG_NODES_SHIFT. It would be simpler. * [PATCH] unify PFN_* macrosDave Hansen2006-03-271-4/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Just about every architecture defines some macros to do operations on pfns. They're all virtually identical. This patch consolidates all of them. One minor glitch is that at least i386 uses them in a very skeletal header file. To keep away from #include dependency hell, I stuck the new definitions in a new, isolated header. Of all of the implementations, sh64 is the only one that varied by a bit. It used some masks to ensure that any sign-extension got ripped away before the arithmetic is done. This has been posted to that sh64 maintainers and the development list. Compiles on x86, x86_64, ia64 and ppc64. * [PATCH] POLLRDHUP/EPOLLRDHUP handling for half-closed devices notificationsDavide Libenzi2006-03-251-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Implement the half-closed devices notifiation, by adding a new POLLRDHUP (and its alias EPOLLRDHUP) bit to the existing poll/select sets. Since the existing POLLHUP handling, that does not report correctly half-closed devices, was feared to be changed, this implementation leaves the current POLLHUP reporting unchanged and simply add a new bit that is set in the few places where it makes sense. The same thing was discussed and conceptually agreed quite some time ago: http://lkml.org/lkml/2003/7/12/116 Since this new event bit is added to the existing Linux poll infrastruture, even the existing poll/select system calls will be able to use it. As far as the existing POLLHUP handling, the patch leaves it as is. The pollrdhup-2.6.16.rc5-0.10.diff defines the POLLRDHUP for all the existing archs and sets the bit in the six relevant files. The other attached diff is the simple change required to sys/epoll.h to add the EPOLLRDHUP definition. There is "a stupid program" to test POLLRDHUP delivery here: http://www.xmailserver.org/pollrdhup-test.c It tests poll(2), but since the delivery is same epoll(2) will work equally. * [PATCH] madvise MADV_DONTFORK/MADV_DOFORKMichael S. Tsirkin2006-02-141-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently, copy-on-write may change the physical address of a page even if the user requested that the page is pinned in memory (either by mlock or by get_user_pages). This happens if the process forks meanwhile, and the parent writes to that page. As a result, the page is orphaned: in case of get_user_pages, the application will never see any data hardware DMA's into this page after the COW. In case of mlock'd memory, the parent is not getting the realtime/security benefits of mlock. In particular, this affects the Infiniband modules which do DMA from and into user pages all the time. This patch adds madvise options to control whether memory range is inherited across fork. Useful e.g. for when hardware is doing DMA from/into these pages. Could also be useful to an application wanting to speed up its forks by cutting large areas out of consideration. Signed-off-by: Michael S. * [PATCH] mutex subsystem, add default include/asm-*/mutex.h filesArjan van de Ven2006-01-091-0/+9
| | | | | | | | | | | | | add the per-arch mutex.h files for the remaining architectures. We default to asm-generic/mutex-dec.h, because that performs quite well on most arches. Arches that do not have atomic decrement/increment instructions should switch to mutex-xchg.h instead. Arches can also provide their own implementation for the mutex fastpath primitives. * [PATCH] mutex subsystem, add atomic_xchg() to all archesIngo Molnar2006-01-091-0/+1
| | | | | | | add atomic_xchg() to all the architectures. Needed by the new mutex code. Signed-off-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu> Signed-off-by: Arjan van de Ven <arjan@infradead.org>
* [PATCH] consolidate asm/futex.hJeff Dike2006-01-081-48/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | Most of the architectures have the same asm/futex.h. This consolidates them into asm-generic, with the arches including it from their own asm/futex.h. In the case of UML, this reverts the old broken futex.h and goes back to using the same one as almost everyone else. * [PATCH] m32r: Update _port2addr to use NONCACHE_OFFSETHirokazu Takata2006-01-061-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | Modify _port2addr*() routines in arch/m32r/kernel/io_*.c to use NONCACHE_OFFSET instead of hard-coding of a constant address. This modification is also required to support an M3A-ZA36 FPGA eva board in case an MMU-less synthesizable m32r core is used. * [PATCH] m32r: Update syscall macros for MMU-less targetsHirokazu Takata2006-01-061-6/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch is for updating m32r's MMU-less support. Some legacy MMU-less m32r chips cannot return from a trap handler to the right-hand side 16-bit halfword code of a 32-bit instrucion code pair, because a "trap" instruction specification was expanded in M32R-II ISA. This modification forces "trap" instructions to be placed in word alignment location with a parallel "nop" code. * [PATCH] m32r: Support M32104UT target platformHirokazu Takata2006-01-067-18/+222
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch is for supporting a new target platform, Renesas M32104UT evaluation board. The M32104UT is an eval board based on an uT-Engine specification. This board has an MMU-less M32R family processor, M32104. http://www-wa0.personal-media.co.jp/pmc/archive/te/te_m32104_e.pdf This board is one of the most popular M32R platform, so we have ported Linux/M32R to it. * [PATCH] atomic_long_t & include/asm-generic/atomic.h V2Christoph Lameter2006-01-061-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Several counters already have the need to use 64 atomic variables on 64 bit platforms (see mm_counter_t in sched.h). We have to do ugly ifdefs to fall back to 32 bit atomic on 32 bit platforms. The VM statistics patch that I am working on will also make more extensive use of atomic64. This patch introduces a new type atomic_long_t by providing definitions in asm-generic/atomic.h that works similar to the c "long" type. Its 32 bits on 32 bit platforms and 64 bits on 64 bit platforms. Also cleans up the determination of the mm_counter_t in sched.h. * [PATCH] madvise(MADV_REMOVE): remove pages from tmpfs shm backing storeBadari Pulavarty2006-01-061-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Here is the patch to implement madvise(MADV_REMOVE) - which frees up a given range of pages & its associated backing store. Current implementation supports only shmfs/tmpfs and other filesystems return -ENOSYS. "Some app allocates large tmpfs files, then when some task quits and some client disconnect, some memory can be released. However the only way to release tmpfs-swap is to MADV_REMOVE". - Andrea Arcangeli Databases want to use this feature to drop a section of their bufferpool (shared memory segments) - without writing back to disk/swap space. This feature is also useful for supporting hot-plug memory on UML. Concerns raised by Andrew Morton: - "We have no plan for holepunching! If we _do_ have such a plan (or might in the future) then what would the API look like? I think sys_holepunch(fd, start, len), so we should start out with that." - Using madvise is very weird, because people will ask "why do I need to mmap my file before I can stick a hole in it?" - None of the other madvise operations call into the filesystem in this manner. A broad question is: is this capability an MM operation or a filesytem operation? truncate, for example, is a filesystem operation which sometimes has MM side-effects. madvise is an mm operation and with this patch, it gains FS side-effects, only they're really, really significant ones." Comments: - Andrea suggested the fs operation too but then it's more efficient to have it as a mm operation with fs side effects, because they don't immediatly know fd and physical offset of the range. It's possible to fixup in userland and to use the fs operation but it's more expensive, the vmas are already in the kernel and we can use them. Short term plan & Future Direction: - We seem to need this interface only for shmfs/tmpfs files in the short term. We have to add hooks into the filesystem for correctness and completeness. This is what this patch does. - In the future, plan is to support both fs and mmap apis also. This also involves (other) filesystem specific functions to be implemented. - Current patch doesn't support VM_NONLINEAR - which can be addressed in the future. * [PATCH] consolidate sys_ptrace()Christoph Hellwig2005-11-071-0/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The sys_ptrace boilerplate code (everything outside the big switch statement for the arch-specific requests) is shared by most architectures. This patch moves it to kernel/ptrace.c and leaves the arch-specific code as arch_ptrace. Some architectures have a too different ptrace so we have to exclude them. They continue to keep their implementations. For sh64 I had to add a sh64_ptrace wrapper because it does some initialization on the first call. For um I removed an ifdefed SUBARCH_PTRACE_SPECIAL block, but SUBARCH_PTRACE_SPECIAL isn't defined anywhere in the tree. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch removes page_pte_prot and page_pte macros from all architectures. Some architectures define both, some only page_pte (broken) and others none.
