* kconfig.h: explain IS_MODULE(), IS_ENABLED()Bjorn Helgaas2021-06-051-2/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Extend IS_MODULE() and IS_ENABLED comments to explain why one might use "#if IS_ENABLED(CONFIG_FOO)" instead of "#ifdef CONFIG_FOO". To wit, "#ifdef CONFIG_FOO" is true only for CONFIG_FOO=y, while "#if IS_ENABLED(CONFIG_FOO)" is true for both CONFIG_FOO=y and CONFIG_FOO=m. This is because "CONFIG_FOO=m" in .config does not result in "CONFIG_FOO" being defined. The actual definitions are in autoconf.h, where: CONFIG_FOO=y results in #define CONFIG_FOO 1 CONFIG_FOO=m results in #define CONFIG_FOO_MODULE 1 Signed-off-by: Bjorn Helgaas <bhelgaas@google.com> Acked-by: Randy Dunlap <rdunlap@infradead.org> Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <masahiroy@kernel.org>
* linux/kconfig.h: replace IF_ENABLED() with PTR_IF() in <linux/kernel.h>Masahiro Yamada2021-05-091-6/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | <linux/kconfig.h> is included from all the kernel-space source files, including C, assembly, linker scripts. It is intended to contain a minimal set of macros to evaluate CONFIG options. IF_ENABLED() is an intruder here because (x ? y : z) is C code, which should not be included from assembly files or linker scripts. Also, <linux/kconfig.h> is no longer self-contained because NULL is defined in <linux/stddef.h>. Move IF_ENABLED() out to <linux/kernel.h> as PTR_IF(). PTF_IF() takes the general boolean expression instead of a CONFIG option so that it fits better in <linux/kernel.h>. * kbuild: rebuild GCC plugins when the compiler is upgradedMasahiro Yamada2021-03-111-2/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Linus reported a build error due to the GCC plugin incompatibility when the compiler is upgraded. [1] GCC plugins are tied to a particular GCC version. So, they must be rebuilt when the compiler is upgraded. This seems to be a long-standing flaw since the initial support of GCC plugins. Extend commit 8b59cd81dc5e ("kbuild: ensure full rebuild when the compiler is updated"), so that GCC plugins are covered by the compiler upgrade detection. * kconfig.h: Add IF_ENABLED() macroPaul Cercueil2021-01-181-0/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | IF_ENABLED(CONFIG_FOO, ptr) evaluates to (ptr) if CONFIG_FOO is set to 'y' or 'm', NULL otherwise. The (ptr) argument must be a pointer. The IF_ENABLED() macro can be very useful to help GCC drop dead code. For instance, consider the following: #ifdef CONFIG_FOO_SUSPEND static int foo_suspend(struct device *dev) { ... } #endif static struct pm_ops foo_ops = { #ifdef CONFIG_FOO_SUSPEND .suspend = foo_suspend, #endif }; While this works, the foo_suspend() macro is compiled conditionally, only when CONFIG_FOO_SUSPEND is set. This is problematic, as there could be a build bug in this function, we wouldn't have a way to know unless the config option is set. An alternative is to declare foo_suspend() always, but mark it as maybe unused: static int __maybe_unused foo_suspend(struct device *dev) { ... } static struct pm_ops foo_ops = { #ifdef CONFIG_FOO_SUSPEND .suspend = foo_suspend, #endif }; Again, this works, but the __maybe_unused attribute is required to instruct the compiler that the function may not be referenced anywhere, and is safe to remove without making a fuss about it. This makes the programmer responsible for tagging the functions that can be garbage-collected. With this patch, it is now possible to write the following: static int foo_suspend(struct device *dev) { ... } static struct pm_ops foo_ops = { .suspend = IF_ENABLED(CONFIG_FOO_SUSPEND, foo_suspend), }; The foo_suspend() function will now be automatically dropped by the compiler, and it does not require any specific attribute. * kbuild: ensure full rebuild when the compiler is updatedMasahiro Yamada2020-05-121-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Commit 21c54b774744 ("kconfig: show compiler version text in the top comment") added the environment variable, CC_VERSION_TEXT in the comment of the top Kconfig file. It can detect the compiler update, and invoke the syncconfig because all environment variables referenced in Kconfig files are recorded in include/config/auto.conf.cmd This commit makes it a CONFIG option in order to ensure the full rebuild when the compiler is updated. This works like follows: include/config/kconfig.h contains "CONFIG_CC_VERSION_TEXT" in the comment block. The top Makefile specifies "-include $(srctree)/include/linux/kconfig.h" to guarantee it is included from all kernel source files. fixdep parses every source file and all headers included from it, searching for words prefixed with "CONFIG_". Then, fixdep finds CONFIG_CC_VERSION_TEXT in include/config/kconfig.h and adds include/config/cc/version/text.h into every .*.cmd file. When the compiler is updated, syncconfig is invoked because init/Kconfig contains the reference to the environment variable CC_VERTION_TEXT. CONFIG_CC_VERSION_TEXT is updated to the new version string, and include/config/cc/version/text.h is touched. In the next rebuild, Make will rebuild every files since the timestamp of include/config/cc/version/text.h is newer than that of target. Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <masahiroy@kernel.org>
* kbuild: get <linux/compiler_types.h> out of <linux/kconfig.h>Masahiro Yamada2018-03-311-3/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Since commit 28128c61e08e ("kconfig.h: Include compiler types to avoid missed struct attributes"), <linux/kconfig.h> pulls in kernel-space headers to unrelated places. Commit 0f9da844d877 ("MIPS: boot: Define __ASSEMBLY__ for its.S build") suppress the build error by defining __ASSEMBLY__, but ITS (i.e. DTS) is not assembly, and should not include <linux/compiler_types.h> in the first place. Looking at arch/s390/tools/Makefile, host programs gen_facilities and gen_opcode_table now pull in <linux/compiler_types.h> as well. The motivation for that commit was to define necessary attributes before any struct is defined. Obviously, this happens only in C. It is enough to include <linux/compiler_types.h> only when compiling C files, and only when compiling kernel space. Move the include to c_flags. This works around the issue through that same file, defining either __BIG_ENDIAN or __LITTLE_ENDIAN depending on CONFIG_CPU_BIG_ENDIAN, which is now always set on all architectures since commit 4c97a0c8fee3 ("arch: define CPU_BIG_ENDIAN for all fixed big endian archs"). * | kconfig.h: Include compiler types to avoid missed struct attributesKees Cook2018-02-221-0/+3
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The header files for some structures could get included in such a way that struct attributes (specifically __randomize_layout from path.h) would be parsed as variable names instead of attributes. This could lead to some instances of a structure being unrandomized, causing nasty GPFs, etc. This patch makes sure the compiler_types.h header is included in kconfig.h so that we've always got types and struct attributes defined, since kconfig.h is included from the compiler command line. * License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman2017-11-021-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. * kconfig.h: remove config_enabled() macroMasahiro Yamada2016-10-271-3/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The use of config_enabled() is ambiguous. For config options, IS_ENABLED(), IS_REACHABLE(), etc. will make intention clearer. Sometimes config_enabled() has been used for non-config options because it is useful to check whether the given symbol is defined or not. I have been tackling on deprecating config_enabled(), and now is the time to finish this work. Some new users have appeared for v4.9-rc1, but it is trivial to replace them: - arch/x86/mm/kaslr.c replace config_enabled() with IS_ENABLED() because CONFIG_X86_ESPFIX64 and CONFIG_EFI are boolean. - include/asm-generic/export.h replace config_enabled() with __is_defined(). Then, config_enabled() can be removed now. Going forward, please use IS_ENABLED(), IS_REACHABLE(), etc. for config options, and __is_defined() for non-config symbols. * kconfig.h: allow to use IS_{ENABLE,REACHABLE} in macro expansionMasahiro Yamada2016-06-201-6/+18
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The typical usage of IS_ENABLED() is if (IS_ENABLED(CONFIG_FOO)) { ... } or #if IS_ENABLED(CONFIG_FOO) ... #endif The current implementation of IS_ENABLED() includes "||" operator, which works well in those expressions like above. However, there is a case where we want to evaluate a config option beyond those use cases. For example, the OF_TABLE() in include/asm-generic/vmlinux.lds.h needs to evaluate a config option in macro expansion: #define ___OF_TABLE(cfg, name) _OF_TABLE_##cfg(name) #define __OF_TABLE(cfg, name) ___OF_TABLE(cfg, name) #define OF_TABLE(cfg, name) __OF_TABLE(config_enabled(cfg), name) #define _OF_TABLE_0(name) #define _OF_TABLE_1(name) \ ... Here, we can not use IS_ENABLED() because of the "||" operator in its define. It is true config_enabled() works well, but it is a bit ambiguous to be used against config options. This commit makes IS_ENABLED() available in more generic context by calculating "or" with macro expansion only. Do likewise for IS_REACHABLE(). | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The macro MODULE is not a config option, it is a per-file build option. So, config_enabled(MODULE) is not sensible. (There is another case in include/linux/export.h, where config_enabled() is used against a non-config option.) This commit renames some macros in include/linux/kconfig.h for the use for non-config macros and replaces config_enabled(MODULE) with __is_defined(MODULE). I am keeping config_enabled() because it is still referenced from some places, but I expect it would be deprecated in the future. | * include/linux/kconfig.h: ese macros which are already definedMichal Simek2015-04-171-8/+7
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | It is better to use macros which are already available because then there is just one location which needs to be change. * | [media] Add and use IS_REACHABLE macroArnd Bergmann2015-04-081-0/+9
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | In the media drivers, the v4l2 core knows about all submodules and calls into them from a common function. However this cannot work if the modules that get called are loadable and the core is built-in. In that case we get drivers/built-in.o: In function `set_type': drivers/media/v4l2-core/tuner-core.c:301: undefined reference to `tea5767_attach' drivers/media/v4l2-core/tuner-core.c:307: undefined reference to `tea5761_attach' drivers/media/v4l2-core/tuner-core.c:349: undefined reference to `tda9887_attach' drivers/media/v4l2-core/tuner-core.c:405: undefined reference to `xc4000_attach' This was working previously, until the IS_ENABLED() macro was used to replace the construct like #if defined(CONFIG_DVB_CX24110) || (defined(CONFIG_DVB_CX24110_MODULE) && defined(MODULE)) with the difference that the new code no longer checks whether it is being built as a loadable module itself. To fix this, this new patch adds an 'IS_REACHABLE' macro, which evaluates true in exactly the condition that was used previously. The downside of this is that this trades an obvious link error for a more subtle runtime failure, but it is clear that the change that introduced the link error was unintentional and it seems better to revert it for now. Also, a similar change was originally created by Trent Piepho and then reverted by teh change to the IS_ENABLED macro. Ideally Kconfig would be used to avoid the case of a broken dependency, or the code restructured in a way to turn around the dependency, but either way would require much larger changes here. * kconfig: fix IS_ENABLED to not require all options to be definedPaul Gortmaker2012-04-121-4/+18
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Using IS_ENABLED() within C (vs. within CPP #if statements) in its current form requires us to actually define every possible bool/tristate Kconfig option twice (__enabled_* and __enabled_*_MODULE variants). This results in a huge autoconf.h file, on the order of 16k lines for a x86_64 defconfig. Fixing IS_ENABLED to be able to work on the smaller subset of just things that we really have defined is step one to fixing this. Which means it has to not choke when fed non-enabled options, such as: include/linux/netdevice.h:964:1: warning: "__enabled_CONFIG_FCOE_MODULE" is not defined [-Wundef] The original prototype of how to implement a C and preprocessor compatible way of doing this came from the Google+ user "comex ." in response to Linus' crowdsourcing challenge for a possible improvement on his earlier C specific solution: #define config_enabled(x) (__stringify(x)[0] == '1') In this implementation, I've chosen variable names that hopefully make how it works more understandable. * kconfig: Introduce IS_ENABLED(), IS_BUILTIN() and IS_MODULE()Michal Marek2011-07-291-0/+32
Replace the config_is_*() macros with a variant that allows for grepping for usage of CONFIG_* options in the code. Usage: if (IS_ENABLED(CONFIG_NUMA)) or #if IS_ENABLED(CONFIG_NUMA) The IS_ENABLED() macro evaluates to 1 if the argument is set (to either 'y' or 'm'), IS_BUILTIN() tests if the option is 'y' and IS_MODULE() test if the option is 'm'. Only boolean and tristate options are supported. Reviewed-by: Arnaud Lacombe <lacombar@gmail.com> Acked-by: Randy Dunlap <rdunlap@xenotime.net> Signed-off-by: Michal Marek <mmarek@suse.cz>
