* tools/thermal/tmon: Fix compilation warning for wrong formatFlorian Eckert2024-01-021-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The following warnings are shown during compilation: tui.c: In function 'show_cooling_device': tui.c:216:40: warning: format '%d' expects argument of type 'int', but argument 7 has type 'long unsigned int' [-Wformat=] 216 | "%02d %12.12s%6d %6d", | ~~^ | | | int | %6ld ...... 219 | ptdata.cdi[j].cur_state, | ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | | | long unsigned int tui.c:216:44: warning: format '%d' expects argument of type 'int', but argument 8 has type 'long unsigned int' [-Wformat=] 216 | "%02d %12.12s%6d %6d", | ~~^ | | | int | %6ld ...... 220 | ptdata.cdi[j].max_state); | ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | | | long unsigned int To fix this, the correct string format must be used for printing. * tools/thermal: Remove unused 'mds' and 'nrhandler' variablesKuan-Wei Chiu2023-10-151-16/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | In the previous code, the 'mds' and 'nrhandler' variables were not utilized in the codebase. Additionally, there was a potential NULL pointer dereference and memory leak due to improper handling of memory reallocation failure. This patch removes the unused 'mds' and 'nrhandler' variables along with the associated code, addressing the unused variable issue, NULL pointer dereference issue and the memory leak issue. * tools/thermal: Fix possible path truncationsFlorian Fainelli2022-08-031-11/+13
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | A build with -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 enabled will produce the following warnings: sysfs.c:63:30: warning: '%s' directive output may be truncated writing up to 255 bytes into a region of size between 0 and 255 [-Wformat-truncation=] snprintf(filepath, 256, "%s/%s", path, filename); ^~ Bump up the buffer to PATH_MAX which is the limit and account for all of the possible NUL and separators that could lead to exceeding the allocated buffer sizes. * tools/thermal: Add thermal daemon skeletonDaniel Lezcano2022-05-193-0/+370
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This change provides a simple daemon skeleton. It is an example of how to use the thermal library which wraps all the complex code related to the netlink and transforms it into a callback oriented code. The goal of this skeleton is to give a base brick for anyone interested in writing its own thermal engine or as an example to rely on to write its own thermal monitoring implementation. In the future, it will evolve with more features and hopefully more logic. | | | | | | | | | | | | | The 'thermometer' tool allows to capture the temperature of a set of thermal zones defined in a configuration file at a specified rate. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Since commit 57fd251c7896 ("kbuild: split cc-option and friends to scripts/Makefile.compiler"), some kselftests fail to build. The tools/ directory opted out Kbuild, and went in a different direction. People copied scripts and Makefiles to the tools/ directory to create their own build system. tools/build/Build.include mimics scripts/Kbuild.include, but some tool Makefiles include the Kbuild one to import a feature that is missing in tools/build/Build.include: - Commit ec04aa3ae87b ("tools/thermal: tmon: use "-fstack-protector" only if supported") included scripts/Kbuild.include from tools/thermal/tmon/Makefile to import the cc-option macro. - Commit c2390f16fc5b ("selftests: kvm: fix for compilers that do not support -no-pie") included scripts/Kbuild.include from tools/testing/selftests/kvm/Makefile to import the try-run macro. - Commit 9cae4ace80ef ("selftests/bpf: do not ignore clang failures") included scripts/Kbuild.include from tools/testing/selftests/bpf/Makefile to import the .DELETE_ON_ERROR target. - Commit 0695f8bca93e ("selftests/powerpc: Handle Makefile for unrecognized option") included scripts/Kbuild.include from tools/testing/selftests/powerpc/pmu/ebb/Makefile to import the try-run macro. Copy what they need into tools/build/Build.include, and make them include it instead of scripts/Kbuild.include. * tools/thermal: tmon: fix for segfaultFrank Asseg2018-03-272-6/+7
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Fixes a segfault occurring when e.g. <TAB> is pressed multiple times in the ncurses tmon application. The segfault is caused by incrementing cur_thermal_record in the main function without checking if it's value reached NR_THERMAL_RECORD immediately. Since the boundary check only occurred in update_thermal_data a race condition existed, which lead to an attempted read beyond the last element of the trec array. The fix was implemented by moving the cur_thermal_record incrementation to the update_thermal_data function using a temporary variable on which the boundary condition is checked before updating cur_thread_record, so that the variable is never incremented beyond the trec array's boundary. It seems the segfault does not occur on every machine: On a HP EliteBook G4 the segfault happens, while it does not happen on a Thinkpad T540p. * | License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman2017-11-022-0/+2
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Some distros (e.g., Arch Linux) don't package the tinfo library separately from ncurses, so don't unconditionally include it. Instead, use pkg-config. The $(STATIC) ugliness is to handle the reported build case from commit 6b533269fb25 ("tools/thermal: tmon: fix compilation errors when building statically"), where a developer wants to be able to build with: make LDFLAGS=-static which requires an additional pkg-config flag. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The number of rows in the dialog vary according to the number of cooling devices. However, some of the windowing computations were assuming a fixed number of rows. This computation is OK when we have between 4 and 9 cooling devices (and they wrap to the next column), but with fewer devices, we end up printing off the end of the window. This unifies the row computation into a single function and uses that throughout the TUI code. This also accounts for increasing the number of rows when there are more than 9 total cooling devices. * tools/thermal: Introduce tmon, a tool for thermal subsystemJacob Pan2013-11-078-0/+2160
Increasingly, Linux is running on thermally constrained devices. The simple thermal relationship between processor and fan has become past for modern computers. As hardware vendors cope with the thermal constraints on their products, more sensors are added, new cooling capabilities are introduced. The complexity of the thermal relationship can grow exponentially among cooling devices, zones, sensors, and trip points. They can also change dynamically. To expose such relationship to the userspace, Linux generic thermal layer introduced sysfs entry at /sys/class/thermal with a matrix of symbolic links, trip point bindings, and device instances. To traverse such matrix by hand is not a trivial task. Testing is also difficult in that thermal conditions are often exception cases that hard to reach in normal operations. TMON is conceived as a tool to help visualize, tune, and test the complex thermal subsystem. Signed-off-by: Jacob Pan <jacob.jun.pan@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Zhang Rui <rui.zhang@intel.com>
