Core code: - Prevent freeing an interrupt in the devres code which is not managed by devres in the first place. - Use seq_put_decimal_ull_width() for decimal values output in /proc/interrupts which increases performance significantly as it avoids parsing the format strings over and over. - Optimize raising the timer and hrtimer soft interrupts by using the 'set bit only' variants instead of the combined version which checks whether ksoftirqd should be woken up. The latter is a pointless exercise as both soft interrupts are raised in the context of the timer interrupt and therefore never wake up ksoftirqd. - Delegate timer/hrtimer soft interrupt processing to a dedicated thread on RT. Timer and hrtimer soft interrupts are always processed in ksoftirqd on RT enabled kernels. This can lead to high latencies when other soft interrupts are delegated to ksoftirqd as well. The separate thread allows to run them seperately under a RT scheduling policy to reduce the latency overhead. Drivers: - New drivers or extensions of existing drivers to support Renesas RZ/V2H(P), Aspeed AST27XX, T-HEAD C900 and ATMEL sam9x7 interrupt chips - Support for multi-cluster GICs on MIPS. MIPS CPUs can come with multiple CPU clusters, where each CPU cluster has its own GIC (Generic Interrupt Controller). This requires to access the GIC of a remote cluster through a redirect register block. In text, such references look like one of the following: mov $0x0,%rax R_X86_64_32S .init.text+0x7e0a0 lea 0x0(%rip),%rax R_X86_64_PC32 autoremove_wake_function-0x4 Either way the function pointer is denoted by a relocation, so objtool just reads that. However there are some "lea xxx(%rip)" cases which don't use relocations because they're referencing code in the same translation unit. Objtool doesn't have visibility to those. The only currently known instances of that are a few hand-coded asm text references which don't actually need ENDBR. So it's not actually a problem at the moment. However if we enable -fpie, the compiler would start generating them and there would definitely be bugs in the IBT sealing. Detect non-relocated text references and handle them appropriately. X86_FEATURE_AMD_HETEROGENEOUS_CORES is used to identify whether the SoC supports heterogeneous core type by reading CPUID leaf Fn_0x80000026. On performance cores the scaling factor of 196 is used. On efficiency cores the scaling factor is the value reported as the highest perf. Efficiency cores have the same preferred core rankings. This however doesn't work on AMD CPPC shared memory designs that have AMD preferred cores enabled because _CPC needs to be analyzed from all cores to judge if preferred cores are enabled. This issue manifests to users as a warning since commit 21fb59ab4b97 ("ACPI: CPPC: Adjust debug messages in amd_set_max_freq_ratio() to warn"): ``` Could not retrieve highest performance (-19) ``` However the warning isn't the cause of this, it was actually commit 279f838a61f9 ("x86/amd: Detect preferred cores in amd_get_boost_ratio_numerator()") which exposed the issue. To fix this problem, change arch_init_invariance_cppc() into a new weak symbol that is called at the end of acpi_processor_driver_init(). Each architecture that supports it can declare the symbol to override the weak one. Define it for x86, in arch/x86/kernel/acpi/cppc.c, and for all of the architectures using the generic arch_topology.c code. The same problem might apply in case a PV guest is configured to use the host memory map. This conflict can be solved by mapping the ACPI data to a different guest physical address, but mapping the data via acpi_os_ioremap() must still be possible using the host physical address, as this address might be generated by AML when referencing some of the ACPI data. When configured to support running as a Xen PV domain, have an implementation of acpi_os_ioremap() being aware of the possibility to need above mentioned translation of a host physical address to the guest physical address. This modification requires to #include linux/acpi.h in some sources which need to include asm/acpi.h directly. |/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | On a platform using the "Multiprocessor Wakeup Structure"[1] to startup secondary CPUs the control processor needs to memremap() the physical address of the MP Wakeup Structure mailbox to the variable acpi_mp_wake_mailbox, which holds the virtual address of mailbox. To wake up the AP the control processor writes the APIC ID of AP, the wakeup vector and the ACPI_MP_WAKE_COMMAND_WAKEUP command into the mailbox. Current implementation doesn't consider the case which restricts boot time CPU bringup to 1 with the kernel parameter "maxcpus=1" and brings other CPUs online later from user space as it sets acpi_mp_wake_mailbox to read-only after init. So when the first AP is tried to brought online after init, the attempt to update the variable results in a kernel panic. The memremap() call that initializes the variable cannot be moved into acpi_parse_mp_wake() because memremap() is not functional at that point in the boot process. Also as the APs might never be brought up, keep the memremap() call in acpi_wakeup_cpu() so that the operation only takes place when needed. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | MADT Multiprocessor Wakeup structure version 1 brings support for CPU offlining: BIOS provides a reset vector where the CPU has to jump to for offlining itself. The new TEST mailbox command can be used to test whether the CPU offlined itself which means the BIOS has control over the CPU and can online it again via the ACPI MADT wakeup method. Add CPU offlining support for the ACPI MADT wakeup method by implementing custom cpu_die(), play_dead() and stop_this_cpu() SMP operations. CPU offlining makes it possible to hand over secondary CPUs over kexec, not limiting the second kernel to a single CPU. The change conforms to the approved ACPI spec change proposal. See the Link. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | ACPI MADT doesn't allow to offline a CPU after it was onlined. This limits kexec: the second kernel won't be able to use more than one CPU. To prevent a kexec kernel from onlining secondary CPUs, invalidate the mailbox address in the ACPI MADT wakeup structure which prevents a kexec kernel to use it. This is safe as the booting kernel has the mailbox address cached already and acpi_wakeup_cpu() uses the cached value to bring up the secondary CPUs. And if this is the case, Linux erroneously treat this cstate as C16, while actually this should be valid C0 instead of C16, as per the specifications. Since ACPI firmware is out of Linux kernel scope, fix the kernel handling of 0xF ->(to) C0 in this situation. This is found when a tweaked ACPI C-state table is presented by Qemu to VM. As this is ensured by counting the vCPUs before enumeration happens: - lift the restrictions in the CPUID evaluation and the MADT parser - Utilize MADT registration for Dom0 - Keep the fake APIC ID registration for DomU - Fix the XEN APIC fake so the readout of the local APIC ID works for Dom0 via the hypercall and for DomU by returning the registered fake APIC IDs. With that the XEN/PV fake approximates usefulness. It overrides the x86_init.mpparse.parse_smp_config() callback, resets num_processors and counts how many of them are provided by the hypervisor. This is in the way of cleaning up the APIC registration. Prevent MADT registration for XEN/PV temporarily until the rework is completed and XEN/PV can use the MADT again. The affected systems have APIC MADT tables where all entries have invalid APIC IDs (0xFF), which means they register exactly zero CPUs. But the condition to ignore the entries of APIC IDs < 255 in the X2APIC MADT table is solely based on the count of MADT APIC table entries. As a consequence, the affected machines enumerate no secondary CPUs at all because the APIC table has entries and therefore the X2APIC table entries with APIC IDs < 255 are ignored. Change the condition so that the APIC table preference for APIC IDs < 255 only becomes effective when the APIC table has valid APIC ID entries. IOW, an APIC table full of invalid APIC IDs is considered to be empty which in consequence enables the X2APIC table entries with a APIC ID < 255 and restores the expected behaviour. The newer models have the topology CPUID leaf 0xB correctly implemented and are not affected. - Make SMT control more robust against enumeration failures SMT control was added to allow controlling SMT at boottime or runtime. The primary purpose was to provide a simple mechanism to disable SMT in the light of speculation attack vectors. It turned out that the code is sensible to enumeration failures and worked only by chance for XEN/PV. XEN/PV has no real APIC enumeration which means the primary thread mask is not set up correctly. By chance a XEN/PV boot ends up with smp_num_siblings == 2, which makes the hotplug control stay at its default value "enabled". So the mask is never evaluated. The ongoing rework of the topology evaluation caused XEN/PV to end up with smp_num_siblings == 1, which sets the SMT control to "not supported" and the empty primary thread mask causes the hotplug core to deny the bringup of the APS. Make the decision logic more robust and take 'not supported' and 'not implemented' into account for the decision whether a CPU should be booted or not. - Fake primary thread mask for XEN/PV Pretend that all XEN/PV vCPUs are primary threads, which makes the usage of the primary thread mask valid on XEN/PV. That is consistent with because all of the topology information on XEN/PV is fake or even non-existent. - Encapsulate topology information in cpuinfo_x86 Move the randomly scattered topology data into a separate data structure for readability and as a preparatory step for the topology evaluation overhaul. - Consolidate APIC ID data type to u32 It's fixed width hardware data and not randomly u16, int, unsigned long or whatever developers decided to use. - Cure the abuse of cpuinfo for persisting logical IDs. Per CPU cpuinfo is used to persist the logical package and die IDs. That's really not the right place simply because cpuinfo is subject to be reinitialized when a CPU goes through an offline/online cycle. Use separate per CPU data for the persisting to enable the further topology management rework. Debugging revealed that the BIOS of these systems leaves the legacy PIC in uninitialized state which makes the PIC detection fail and the kernel switches to a dummy implementation. Unfortunately this fallback causes quite some code to fail as it depends on checks for the number of legacy PIC interrupts or the availability of the real PIC. In theory there is no reason to use the PIC on any modern system when IO/APIC is available, but the dependencies on the related checks cannot be resolved trivially and on short notice. This needs lots of analysis and rework. The PIC detection has been added to avoid quirky checks and force selection of the dummy implementation all over the place, especially in VM guest scenarios. So it's not an option to revert the relevant commit as that would break a lot of other scenarios. One solution would be to try to initialize the PIC on detection fail and retry the detection, but that puts the burden on everything which does not have a PIC. Fortunately the ACPI/MADT table header has a flag field, which advertises in bit 0 that the system is PCAT compatible, which means it has a legacy 8259 PIC. Evaluate that bit and if set avoid the detection routine and keep the real PIC installed, which then gets initialized (for nothing) and makes the rest of the code with all the dependencies work again. The real-mode startup code is already serialized with a bit-spinlock to protect the real-mode stack. In parallel startup mode the smpboot_control variable obviously cannot contain the Linux CPU number so the APs have to determine their Linux CPU number on their own. This is required to find the CPUs per CPU offset in order to find the idle task stack and other per CPU data. To achieve this, export the cpuid_to_apicid[] array so that each AP can find its own CPU number by searching therein based on its APIC ID. Introduce a flag in the top bits of smpboot_control which indicates that the AP should find its CPU number by reading the APIC ID from the APIC. This is required because CPUID based APIC ID retrieval can only provide the initial APIC ID, which might have been overruled by the firmware. Some AMD APUs come up with APIC ID = initial APIC ID + 0x10, so the APIC ID to CPU number lookup would fail miserably if based on CPUID. Also virtualization can make its own APIC ID assignements. The only requirement is that the APIC IDs are consistent with the APCI/MADT table. For the boot CPU or in case parallel bringup is disabled the control bits are empty and the CPU number is directly available in bit 0-23 of smpboot_control.
