Pull vdso data page handling updates from Thomas Gleixner:
"First steps of consolidating the VDSO data page handling.
The VDSO data page handling is architecture specific for historical
reasons, but there is no real technical reason to do so.
Aside of that VDSO data has become a dump ground for various
mechanisms and fail to provide a clear separation of the
functionalities.
Clean this up by:
- consolidating the VDSO page data by getting rid of architecture
specific warts especially in x86 and PowerPC.
- removing the last includes of header files which are pulling in
other headers outside of the VDSO namespace.
- seperating timekeeping and other VDSO data accordingly.
Further consolidation of the VDSO page handling is done in subsequent
changes scheduled for the next merge window.
This also lays the ground for expanding the VDSO time getters for
independent PTP clocks in a generic way without making every
architecture add support seperately"

The systemcfg page through procfs is only a backwards-compatible
interface for very old applications.
Make it possible to be disabled.
This also creates a convenient config #define to guard any accesses to
the systemcfg page.

Fixes boot failures on 6.9 on PPC_BOOK3S_32 machines using Open Firmware.
On these machines, the kernel refuses to boot from non-zero
PHYSICAL_START, which occurs when CRASH_DUMP is on.
Since most PPC_BOOK3S_32 machines boot via Open Firmware, it should
default to off for them. Users booting via some other mechanism can still
turn it on explicitly.
Does not change the default on any other architectures for the
time being.

DMA ops are a helper for architectures and not for drivers to override
the DMA implementation.
Unfortunately driver authors keep ignoring this. Make the fact more
clear by renaming the symbol to ARCH_HAS_DMA_OPS and having the two drivers
overriding their dma_ops depend on that. These drivers should probably be
marked broken, but we can give them a bit of a grace period for that.

This is an adaptation of commit f3a112c0c40d ("x86,rethook,kprobes:
Replace kretprobe with rethook on x86") to powerpc.
Rethook follows the existing kretprobe implementation, but separates
it from kprobes so that it can be used by fprobe (ftrace-based
function entry/exit probes). As such, this patch also enables fprobe
to work on powerpc. The only other change compared to the existing
kretprobe implementation is doing the return address fixup in
arch_rethook_fixup_return().
Reference to other archs:
commit b57c2f124098 ("riscv: add riscv rethook implementation")
commit 7b0a096436c2 ("LoongArch: Replace kretprobe with rethook")
Note:
=====
In future, rethook will be only for kretprobe, and kretprobe
will be replaced by fprobe.
https://lore.kernel.org/all/172000134410.63468.13742222887213469474.stgit@devnote2/
We will adapt the above implementation for powerpc once its upstream.
Until then, we can have this implementation of rethook to serve
current kretprobe usecases.

book3s/32 platforms have usually more memory than 8xx, but it is still
not worth reserving a full segment (256 Mbytes) for module text.
64Mbytes should be far enough.
Also fix TASK_SIZE when EXECMEM is not selected, and add a build
verification for overlap of module execmem space with user segments.

8xx boards don't have much memory, the two I know have respectively
32Mbytes and 128Mbytes, so there is no point in having 256 Mbytes of
memory for module text.
Reduce it to 32Mbytes for 8xx, that's more than enough.
Nevertheless, make it a configurable value so that it can be customised
if needed.
Also add a build verification for overlap of module execmem space
with user PMD.

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/crng/random
Pull random number generator updates from Jason Donenfeld:
"Originally I'd planned on sending each of the vDSO getrandom()
architecture ports to their respective arch trees. But as we started
to work on this, we found lots of interesting issues in the shared
code and infrastructure, the fixes for which the various archs needed
to base their work.
So in the end, this turned into a nice collaborative effort fixing up
issues and porting to 5 new architectures -- arm64, powerpc64,
powerpc32, s390x, and loongarch64 -- with everybody pitching in and
commenting on each other's code. It was a fun development cycle.
This contains:
- Numerous fixups to the vDSO selftest infrastructure, getting it
running successfully on more platforms, and fixing bugs in it.
- Additions to the vDSO getrandom & chacha selftests. Basically every
time manual review unearthed a bug in a revision of an arch patch,
or an ambiguity, the tests were augmented.
By the time the last arch was submitted for review, s390x, v1 of
the series was essentially fine right out of the gate.
- Fixes to the the generic C implementation of vDSO getrandom, to
build and run successfully on all archs, decoupling it from
assumptions we had (unintentionally) made on x86_64 that didn't
carry through to the other architectures.
- Port of vDSO getrandom to LoongArch64, from Xi Ruoyao and acked by
Huacai Chen.
- Port of vDSO getrandom to ARM64, from Adhemerval Zanella and acked
by Will Deacon.
- Port of vDSO getrandom to PowerPC, in both 32-bit and 64-bit
varieties, from Christophe Leroy and acked by Michael Ellerman.
- Port of vDSO getrandom to S390X from Heiko Carstens, the arch
maintainer.
While it'd be natural for there to be things to fix up over the course
of the development cycle, these patches got a decent amount of review
from a fairly diverse crew of folks on the mailing lists, and, for the
most part, they've been cooking in linux-next, which has been helpful
for ironing out build issues.
In terms of architectures, I think that mostly takes care of the
important 64-bit archs with hardware still being produced and running
production loads in settings where vDSO getrandom is likely to help.
Arguably there's still RISC-V left, and we'll see for 6.13 whether
they find it useful and submit a port"

To be consistent with other VDSO functions, the function is called
__kernel_getrandom()
__arch_chacha20_blocks_nostack() fonction is implemented basically
with 32 bits operations. It performs 4 QUARTERROUND operations in
parallele. There are enough registers to avoid using the stack:
On input:
r3: output bytes
r4: 32-byte key input
r5: 8-byte counter input/output
r6: number of 64-byte blocks to write to output
During operation:
stack: pointer to counter (r5) and non-volatile registers (r14-131)
r0: counter of blocks (initialised with r6)
r4: Value '4' after key has been read, used for indexing
r5-r12: key
r14-r15: block counter
r16-r31: chacha state
At the end:
r0, r6-r12: Zeroised
r5, r14-r31: Restored
Performance on powerpc 885 (using kernel selftest):
~# ./vdso_test_getrandom bench-single
vdso: 25000000 times in 62.938002291 seconds
libc: 25000000 times in 535.581916866 seconds
syscall: 25000000 times in 531.525042806 seconds
Performance on powerpc 8321 (using kernel selftest):
~# ./vdso_test_getrandom bench-single
vdso: 25000000 times in 16.899318858 seconds
libc: 25000000 times in 131.050596522 seconds
syscall: 25000000 times in 129.794790389 seconds
This first patch adds support for VDSO32. As selftests cannot easily
be generated only for VDSO32, and because the following patch brings
support for VDSO64 anyway, this patch opts out all code in
__arch_chacha20_blocks_nostack() so that vdso_test_chacha will not
fail to compile and will not crash on PPC64/PPC64LE, allthough the
selftest itself will fail.

While Documentation/kbuild/kconfig-language.rst provides a brief
explanation, there are recurring confusions regarding the usage of a
prompt followed by 'if <expr>'. This conditional controls _only_ the
prompt.
A typical usage is as follows:
menuconfig BLOCK
bool "Enable the block layer" if EXPERT
default y
When EXPERT=n, the prompt is hidden, but this config entry is still
active, and BLOCK is set to its default value 'y'. This is reasonable
because you are likely want to enable the block device support. When
EXPERT=y, the prompt is shown, allowing you to toggle BLOCK.
Please note that it is different from 'depends on EXPERT', which would
enable and disable the entire config entry.
However, this conditional prompt has never worked in a choice block.
The following two work in the same way: when EXPERT is disabled, the
choice block is entirely disabled.
[Test Code 1]
choice
prompt "choose" if EXPERT
config A
bool "A"
config B
bool "B"
endchoice
[Test Code 2]
choice
prompt "choose"
depends on EXPERT
config A
bool "A"
config B
bool "B"
endchoice
I believe the first case should hide only the prompt, producing the
default:
CONFIG_A=y
# CONFIG_B is not set
The next commit will change (fix) the behavior of the conditional prompt
in choice blocks.
I see several choice blocks wrongly using a conditional prompt, where
'depends on' makes more sense.
To preserve the current behavior, this commit converts such misuses.
I did not touch the following entry in arch/x86/Kconfig:
choice
prompt "Memory split" if EXPERT
default VMSPLIT_3G
This is truly the correct use of the conditional prompt; when EXPERT=n,
this choice block should silently select the reasonable VMSPLIT_3G,
although the resulting PAGE_OFFSET will not be affected anyway.
Presumably, the one in fs/jffs2/Kconfig is also correct, but I converted
it to 'depends on' to avoid any potential behavioral change.

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/akpm/mm
Pull MM updates from Andrew Morton:
- In the series "mm: Avoid possible overflows in dirty throttling" Jan
Kara addresses a couple of issues in the writeback throttling code.
These fixes are also targetted at -stable kernels.
- Ryusuke Konishi's series "nilfs2: fix potential issues related to
reserved inodes" does that. This should actually be in the
mm-nonmm-stable tree, along with the many other nilfs2 patches. My
bad.
- More folio conversions from Kefeng Wang in the series "mm: convert to
folio_alloc_mpol()"
- Kemeng Shi has sent some cleanups to the writeback code in the series
"Add helper functions to remove repeated code and improve readability
of cgroup writeback"
- Kairui Song has made the swap code a little smaller and a little
faster in the series "mm/swap: clean up and optimize swap cache
index".
- In the series "mm/memory: cleanly support zeropage in
vm_insert_page*(), vm_map_pages*() and vmf_insert_mixed()" David
Hildenbrand has reworked the rather sketchy handling of the use of
the zeropage in MAP_SHARED mappings. I don't see any runtime effects
here - more a cleanup/understandability/maintainablity thing.
- Dev Jain has improved selftests/mm/va_high_addr_switch.c's handling
of higher addresses, for aarch64. The (poorly named) series is
"Restructure va_high_addr_switch".
- The core TLB handling code gets some cleanups and possible slight
optimizations in Bang Li's series "Add update_mmu_tlb_range() to
simplify code".
- Jane Chu has improved the handling of our
fake-an-unrecoverable-memory-error testing feature MADV_HWPOISON in
the series "Enhance soft hwpoison handling and injection".
- Jeff Johnson has sent a billion patches everywhere to add
MODULE_DESCRIPTION() to everything. Some landed in this pull.
- In the series "mm: cleanup MIGRATE_SYNC_NO_COPY mode", Kefeng Wang
has simplified migration's use of hardware-offload memory copying.
- Yosry Ahmed performs more folio API conversions in his series "mm:
zswap: trivial folio conversions".
- In the series "large folios swap-in: handle refault cases first",
Chuanhua Han inches us forward in the handling of large pages in the
swap code. This is a cleanup and optimization, working toward the end
objective of full support of large folio swapin/out.
- In the series "mm,swap: cleanup VMA based swap readahead window
calculation", Huang Ying has contributed some cleanups and a possible
fixlet to his VMA based swap readahead code.
- In the series "add mTHP support for anonymous shmem" Baolin Wang has
taught anonymous shmem mappings to use multisize THP. By default this
is a no-op - users must opt in vis sysfs controls. Dramatic
improvements in pagefault latency are realized.
- David Hildenbrand has some cleanups to our remaining use of
page_mapcount() in the series "fs/proc: move page_mapcount() to
fs/proc/internal.h".
- David also has some highmem accounting cleanups in the series
"mm/highmem: don't track highmem pages manually".
- Build-time fixes and cleanups from John Hubbard in the series
"cleanups, fixes, and progress towards avoiding "make headers"".
- Cleanups and consolidation of the core pagemap handling from Barry
Song in the series "mm: introduce pmd|pte_needs_soft_dirty_wp helpers
and utilize them".
- Lance Yang's series "Reclaim lazyfree THP without splitting" has
reduced the latency of the reclaim of pmd-mapped THPs under fairly
common circumstances. A 10x speedup is seen in a microbenchmark.
It does this by punting to aother CPU but I guess that's a win unless
all CPUs are pegged.
- hugetlb_cgroup cleanups from Xiu Jianfeng in the series
"mm/hugetlb_cgroup: rework on cftypes".
- Miaohe Lin's series "Some cleanups for memory-failure" does just that
thing.
- Someone other than SeongJae has developed a DAMON feature in Honggyu
Kim's series "DAMON based tiered memory management for CXL memory".
This adds DAMON features which may be used to help determine the
efficiency of our placement of CXL/PCIe attached DRAM.
- DAMON user API centralization and simplificatio work in SeongJae
Park's series "mm/damon: introduce DAMON parameters online commit
function".
- In the series "mm: page_type, zsmalloc and page_mapcount_reset()"
David Hildenbrand does some maintenance work on zsmalloc - partially
modernizing its use of pageframe fields.
- Kefeng Wang provides more folio conversions in the series "mm: remove
page_maybe_dma_pinned() and page_mkclean()".
- More cleanup from David Hildenbrand, this time in the series
"mm/memory_hotplug: use PageOffline() instead of PageReserved() for
!ZONE_DEVICE". It "enlightens memory hotplug more about PageOffline()
pages" and permits the removal of some virtio-mem hacks.
- Barry Song's series "mm: clarify folio_add_new_anon_rmap() and
__folio_add_anon_rmap()" is a cleanup to the anon folio handling in
preparation for mTHP (multisize THP) swapin.
- Kefeng Wang's series "mm: improve clear and copy user folio"
implements more folio conversions, this time in the area of large
folio userspace copying.
- The series "Docs/mm/damon/maintaier-profile: document a mailing tool
and community meetup series" tells people how to get better involved
with other DAMON developers. From SeongJae Park.
- A large series ("kmsan: Enable on s390") from Ilya Leoshkevich does
that.
- David Hildenbrand sends along more cleanups, this time against the
migration code. The series is "mm/migrate: move NUMA hinting fault
folio isolation + checks under PTL".
- Jan Kara has found quite a lot of strangenesses and minor errors in
the readahead code. He addresses this in the series "mm: Fix various
readahead quirks".
- SeongJae Park's series "selftests/damon: test DAMOS tried regions and
{min,max}_nr_regions" adds features and addresses errors in DAMON's
self testing code.
- Gavin Shan has found a userspace-triggerable WARN in the pagecache
code. The series "mm/filemap: Limit page cache size to that supported
by xarray" addresses this. The series is marked cc:stable.
- Chengming Zhou's series "mm/ksm: cmp_and_merge_page() optimizations
and cleanup" cleans up and slightly optimizes KSM.
- Roman Gushchin has separated the memcg-v1 and memcg-v2 code - lots of
code motion. The series (which also makes the memcg-v1 code
Kconfigurable) are "mm: memcg: separate legacy cgroup v1 code and put
under config option" and "mm: memcg: put cgroup v1-specific memcg
data under CONFIG_MEMCG_V1"
- Dan Schatzberg's series "Add swappiness argument to memory.reclaim"
adds an additional feature to this cgroup-v2 control file.
- The series "Userspace controls soft-offline pages" from Jiaqi Yan
permits userspace to stop the kernel's automatic treatment of
excessive correctable memory errors. In order to permit userspace to
monitor and handle this situation.
- Kefeng Wang's series "mm: migrate: support poison recover from
migrate folio" teaches the kernel to appropriately handle migration
from poisoned source folios rather than simply panicing.
- SeongJae Park's series "Docs/damon: minor fixups and improvements"
does those things.
- In the series "mm/zsmalloc: change back to per-size_class lock"
Chengming Zhou improves zsmalloc's scalability and memory
utilization.
- Vivek Kasireddy's series "mm/gup: Introduce memfd_pin_folios() for
pinning memfd folios" makes the GUP code use FOLL_PIN rather than
bare refcount increments. So these paes can first be moved aside if
they reside in the movable zone or a CMA block.
- Andrii Nakryiko has added a binary ioctl()-based API to
/proc/pid/maps for much faster reading of vma information. The series
is "query VMAs from /proc/<pid>/maps".
- In the series "mm: introduce per-order mTHP split counters" Lance
Yang improves the kernel's presentation of developer information
related to multisize THP splitting.
- Michael Ellerman has developed the series "Reimplement huge pages
without hugepd on powerpc (8xx, e500, book3s/64)". This permits
userspace to use all available huge page sizes.
- In the series "revert unconditional slab and page allocator fault
injection calls" Vlastimil Babka removes a performance-affecting and
not very useful feature from slab fault injection.

Replace 4xx usage with 44x, and replace 4xx_SOC with 44x.
Also, as pointed out by Christophe, if 44x || BOOKE can be simplified to
just test BOOKE, because 44x always selects BOOKE.
Retain the CONFIG_4xx symbol, as there are drivers that use it to mean
4xx || 44x, those will need updating before CONFIG_4xx can be removed.

When building a 32-bit kernel, some toolchains do not allow mixing soft
float and hard float object files:
LD vmlinux.o
powerpc64le-unknown-linux-musl-ld: lib/test_fpu_impl.o uses hard float, arch/powerpc/kernel/udbg.o uses soft float
powerpc64le-unknown-linux-musl-ld: failed to merge target specific data of file lib/test_fpu_impl.o

make[1]: *** [Makefile:1152: vmlinux_o] Error 2
make: *** [Makefile:240: __sub-make] Error 2
This is not an issue when building a 64-bit kernel. To unbreak the
build, limit ARCH_HAS_KERNEL_FPU_SUPPORT to 64-bit kernels. This is okay
because the only real user of this option, amdgpu, was previously
limited to PPC64 anyway; see commit a28e4b672f04 ("drm/amd/display: use
ARCH_HAS_KERNEL_FPU_SUPPORT").

Pull mm updates from Andrew Morton:
"The usual shower of singleton fixes and minor series all over MM,
documented (hopefully adequately) in the respective changelogs.
Notable series include:
- Lucas Stach has provided some page-mapping cleanup/consolidation/
maintainability work in the series "mm/treewide: Remove pXd_huge()
API".
- In the series "Allow migrate on protnone reference with
MPOL_PREFERRED_MANY policy", Donet Tom has optimized mempolicy's
MPOL_PREFERRED_MANY mode, yielding almost doubled performance in
one test.
- In their series "Memory allocation profiling" Kent Overstreet and
Suren Baghdasaryan have contributed a means of determining (via
/proc/allocinfo) whereabouts in the kernel memory is being
allocated: number of calls and amount of memory.
- Matthew Wilcox has provided the series "Various significant MM
patches" which does a number of rather unrelated things, but in
largely similar code sites.
- In his series "mm: page_alloc: freelist migratetype hygiene"
Johannes Weiner has fixed the page allocator's handling of
migratetype requests, with resulting improvements in compaction
efficiency.
- In the series "make the hugetlb migration strategy consistent"

reflect that as well.
Let's make the config option reflect that.

- Enable BPF Kernel Functions (kfuncs) in the powerpc BPF JIT.
- Allow per-process DEXCR (Dynamic Execution Control Register) settings
via prctl, notably NPHIE which controls hashst/hashchk for ROP
protection.
- Install powerpc selftests in sub-directories. Note this changes the
way run_kselftest.sh needs to be invoked for powerpc selftests.
- Change fadump (Firmware Assisted Dump) to better handle memory
add/remove.
- Add support for passing additional parameters to the fadump kernel.
- Add support for updating the kdump image on CPU/memory add/remove

Due to CPU/Memory hotplug or online/offline events, the elfcorehdr
(which describes the CPUs and memory of the crashed kernel) and FDT
(Flattened Device Tree) of kdump image becomes outdated. Consequently,
attempting dump collection with an outdated elfcorehdr or FDT can lead
to failed or inaccurate dump collection.
Going forward, CPU hotplug or online/offline events are referred as
CPU/Memory add/remove events.
The current solution to address the above issue involves monitoring the
CPU/Memory add/remove events in userspace using udev rules and whenever
there are changes in CPU and memory resources, the entire kdump image
is loaded again. The kdump image includes kernel, initrd, elfcorehdr,
FDT, purgatory. Given that only elfcorehdr and FDT get outdated due to
CPU/Memory add/remove events, reloading the entire kdump image is
inefficient. More importantly, kdump remains inactive for a substantial
amount of time until the kdump reload completes.
To address the aforementioned issue, commit 247262756121 ("crash: add
generic infrastructure for crash hotplug support") added a generic
infrastructure that allows architectures to selectively update the kdump
image component during CPU or memory add/remove events within the kernel
itself.
In the event of a CPU or memory add/remove events, the generic crash
hotplug event handler, `crash_handle_hotplug_event()`, is triggered. It
then acquires the necessary locks to update the kdump image and invokes
the architecture-specific crash hotplug handler,
`arch_crash_handle_hotplug_event()`, to update the required kdump image
components.
This patch adds crash hotplug handler for PowerPC and enable support to
update the kdump image on CPU add/remove events. Support for memory
add/remove events is added in a subsequent patch with the title
"powerpc: add crash memory hotplug support"
As mentioned earlier, only the elfcorehdr and FDT kdump image components
need to be updated in the event of CPU or memory add/remove events.
However, on PowerPC architecture crash hotplug handler only updates the
FDT to enable crash hotplug support for CPU add/remove events. Here's
why.
The elfcorehdr on PowerPC is built with possible CPUs, and thus, it does
not need an update on CPU add/remove events. On the other hand, the FDT
needs to be updated on CPU add events to include the newly added CPU. If
the FDT is not updated and the kernel crashes on a newly added CPU, the
kdump kernel will fail to boot due to the unavailability of the crashing
CPU in the FDT. During the early boot, it is expected that the boot CPU
must be a part of the FDT; otherwise, the kernel will raise a BUG and
fail to boot. For more information, refer to commit 36ae37e3436b0
("powerpc: Make boot_cpuid common between 32 and 64-bit"). Since it is
okay to have an offline CPU in the kdump FDT, no action is taken in case
of CPU removal.
There are two system calls, `kexec_file_load` and `kexec_load`, used to
load the kdump image. Few changes have been made to ensure kernel can
safely update the FDT of kdump image loaded using both system calls.
For kexec_file_load syscall the kdump image is prepared in kernel. So to
support an increasing number of CPUs, the FDT is constructed with extra
buffer space to ensure it can accommodate a possible number of CPU
nodes. Additionally, a call to fdt_pack (which trims the unused space
once the FDT is prepared) is avoided if this feature is enabled.
For the kexec_load syscall, the FDT is updated only if the
KEXEC_CRASH_HOTPLUG_SUPPORT kexec flag is passed to the kernel by
userspace (kexec tools). When userspace passes this flag to the kernel,
it indicates that the FDT is built to accommodate possible CPUs, and the
FDT segment is excluded from SHA calculation, making it safe to update.
The changes related to this feature are kept under the CRASH_HOTPLUG
config, and it is enabled by default.

This reverts commit 6fcb574125e6 ("powerpc: Kconfig: disable
CONFIG_COMPAT for clang < 12").
Now that the minimum supported version of LLVM for building the kernel has
been bumped to 13.0.1, this condition is always true, as the build will
fail during the configuration stage for older LLVM versions. Remove it.

significant reductions in system time and modest but measurable
reductions in overall runtimes. The series is "mm/zswap: optimize the
scalability of zswap rb-tree".
- Chengming Zhou has also provided the series "mm/zswap: optimize zswap
lru list" which provides measurable runtime benefits in some
swap-intensive situations.
- And Chengming Zhou further optimizes zswap in the series "mm/zswap:
optimize for dynamic zswap_pools". Measured improvements are modest.
- zswap cleanups and simplifications from Yosry Ahmed in the series
"mm: zswap: simplify zswap_swapoff()".
- In the series "Add DAX ABI for memmap_on_memory", Vishal Verma has
contributed several DAX cleanups as well as adding a sysfs tunable to
control the memmap_on_memory setting when the dax device is
hotplugged as system memory.
- Johannes Weiner has added the large series "mm: zswap: cleanups",
which does that.
- More DAMON work from SeongJae Park in the series
"mm/damon: make DAMON debugfs interface deprecation unignorable"
"selftests/damon: add more tests for core functionalities and corner cases"
"Docs/mm/damon: misc readability improvements"
"mm/damon: let DAMOS feeds and tame/auto-tune itself"
- In the series "mm/mempolicy: weighted interleave mempolicy and sysfs
extension" Rakie Kim has developed a new mempolicy interleaving
policy wherein we allocate memory across nodes in a weighted fashion
rather than uniformly. This is beneficial in heterogeneous memory
environments appearing with CXL.
- Christophe Leroy has contributed some cleanup and consolidation work
against the ARM pagetable dumping code in the series "mm: ptdump:
Refactor CONFIG_DEBUG_WX and check_wx_pages debugfs attribute".
- Luis Chamberlain has added some additional xarray selftesting in the
series "test_xarray: advanced API multi-index tests".
- Muhammad Usama Anjum has reworked the selftest code to make its
human-readable output conform to the TAP ("Test Anything Protocol")
format. Amongst other things, this opens up the use of third-party
tools to parse and process out selftesting results.
- Ryan Roberts has added fork()-time PTE batching of THP ptes in the
series "mm/memory: optimize fork() with PTE-mapped THP". Mainly
targeted at arm64, this significantly speeds up fork() when the
process has a large number of pte-mapped folios.
- David Hildenbrand also gets in on the THP pte batching game in his
series "mm/memory: optimize unmap/zap with PTE-mapped THP". It
implements batching during munmap() and other pte teardown
situations. The microbenchmark improvements are nice.
- And in the series "Transparent Contiguous PTEs for User Mappings"
Ryan Roberts further utilizes arm's pte's contiguous bit ("contpte
mappings"). Kernel build times on arm64 improved nicely. Ryan's
series "Address some contpte nits" provides some followup work.
- In the series "mm/hugetlb: Restore the reservation" Breno Leitao has
fixed an obscure hugetlb race which was causing unnecessary page
faults. He has also added a reproducer under the selftest code.
- In the series "selftests/mm: Output cleanups for the compaction
test", Mark Brown did what the title claims.
- Kinsey Ho has added the series "mm/mglru: code cleanup and
refactoring".
- Even more zswap material from Nhat Pham. The series "fix and extend
zswap kselftests" does as claimed.
- In the series "Introduce cpu_dcache_is_aliasing() to fix DAX
regression" Mathieu Desnoyers has cleaned up and fixed rather a mess
in our handling of DAX on archiecctures which have virtually aliasing
data caches. The arm architecture is the main beneficiary.
- Lokesh Gidra's series "per-vma locks in userfaultfd" provides
dramatic improvements in worst-case mmap_lock hold times during
certain userfaultfd operations.
- Some page_owner enhancements and maintenance work from Oscar Salvador
in his series
"page_owner: print stacks and their outstanding allocations"
"page_owner: Fixup and cleanup"
- Uladzislau Rezki has contributed some vmalloc scalability
improvements in his series "Mitigate a vmap lock contention". It
realizes a 12x improvement for a certain microbenchmark.
- Some kexec/crash cleanup work from Baoquan He in the series "Split
crash out from kexec and clean up related config items".
- Some zsmalloc maintenance work from Chengming Zhou in the series
"mm/zsmalloc: fix and optimize objects/page migration"
"mm/zsmalloc: some cleanup for get/set_zspage_mapping()"
- Zi Yan has taught the MM to perform compaction on folios larger than
order=0. This a step along the path to implementaton of the merging
of large anonymous folios. The series is named "Enable >0 order folio
memory compaction".
- Christoph Hellwig has done quite a lot of cleanup work in the
pagecache writeback code in his series "convert write_cache_pages()
to an iterator".
- Some modest hugetlb cleanups and speedups in Vishal Moola's series
"Handle hugetlb faults under the VMA lock".
- Zi Yan has changed the page splitting code so we can split huge pages
into sizes other than order-0 to better utilize large folios. The
series is named "Split a folio to any lower order folios".
- David Hildenbrand has contributed the series "mm: remove
total_mapcount()", a cleanup.
- Matthew Wilcox has sought to improve the performance of bulk memory
freeing in his series "Rearrange batched folio freeing".
- Gang Li's series "hugetlb: parallelize hugetlb page init on boot"
provides large improvements in bootup times on large machines which
are configured to use large numbers of hugetlb pages.
- Matthew Wilcox's series "PageFlags cleanups" does that.
- Qi Zheng's series "minor fixes and supplement for ptdesc" does that
also. S390 is affected.
- Cleanups to our pagemap utility functions from Peter Xu in his series
"mm/treewide: Replace pXd_large() with pXd_leaf()".
- Nico Pache has fixed a few things with our hugepage selftests in his
series "selftests/mm: Improve Hugepage Test Handling in MM
Selftests".
- Also, of course, many singleton patches to many things. Please see
the individual changelogs for details.

In PowerPC, the crash dumping and kexec reboot share code in
arch_kexec_locate_mem_hole(), in which struct crash_mem is used.
Here enfoce enforce KEXEC and KEXEC_FILE to select CRASH_DUMP for now.

In kdump kernel, /proc/vmcore is an elf file mapping the crashed kernel's
old memory content. Its elf header is constructed in 1st kernel and passed
to kdump kernel via elfcorehdr_addr. Config CRASH_DUMP enables the code
of 1st kernel's old memory accessing in different architectures.
Currently, config FA_DUMP has dependency on CRASH_DUMP because fadump
needs access global variable 'elfcorehdr_addr' to judge if it's in
kdump kernel within function is_kdump_kernel(). In the current
kernel/crash_dump.c, variable 'elfcorehdr_addr' is defined, and function
setup_elfcorehdr() used to parse kernel parameter to fetch the passed
value of elfcorehdr_addr. Only for accessing elfcorehdr_addr, FA_DUMP
really doesn't have to depends on CRASH_DUMP.
To remove the dependency of FA_DUMP on CRASH_DUMP to avoid confusion,
rename kernel/crash_dump.c to kernel/elfcorehdr.c, and build it when
CONFIG_VMCORE_INFO is ebabled. With this, FA_DUMP doesn't need to depend
on CRASH_DUMP.

Now move the relevant codes into separate files:
kernel/crash_reserve.c, include/linux/crash_reserve.h.
And add config item CRASH_RESERVE to control its enabling.
And also update the old ifdeffery of CONFIG_CRASH_CORE, including of
<linux/crash_core.h> and config item dependency on CRASH_CORE
accordingly.
And also do renaming as follows:
- arch/xxx/kernel/{crash_core.c => vmcore_info.c}

Patch series "Split crash out from kexec and clean up related config
items", v3.
Motivation:
=============
Previously, LKP reported a building error. When investigating, it can't
be resolved reasonablly with the present messy kdump config items.
https://lore.kernel.org/oe-kbuild-all/202312182200.Ka7MzifQ-lkp@intel.com/
The kdump (crash dumping) related config items could causes confusions:
Firstly,
CRASH_CORE enables codes including
- crashkernel reservation;
- elfcorehdr updating;
- vmcoreinfo exporting;
- crash hotplug handling;
Now fadump of powerpc, kcore dynamic debugging and kdump all selects
CRASH_CORE, while fadump
- fadump needs crashkernel parsing, vmcoreinfo exporting, and accessing
global variable 'elfcorehdr_addr';
- kcore only needs vmcoreinfo exporting;
- kdump needs all of the current kernel/crash_core.c.
So only enabling PROC_CORE or FA_DUMP will enable CRASH_CORE, this
mislead people that we enable crash dumping, actual it's not.
Secondly,
It's not reasonable to allow KEXEC_CORE select CRASH_CORE.
Because KEXEC_CORE enables codes which allocate control pages, copy
kexec/kdump segments, and prepare for switching. These codes are
shared by both kexec reboot and kdump. We could want kexec reboot,
but disable kdump. In that case, CRASH_CORE should not be selected.
--------------------
CONFIG_CRASH_CORE=y
CONFIG_KEXEC_CORE=y
CONFIG_KEXEC=y
CONFIG_KEXEC_FILE=y
---------------------
Thirdly,
It's not reasonable to allow CRASH_DUMP select KEXEC_CORE.
That could make KEXEC_CORE, CRASH_DUMP are enabled independently from
KEXEC or KEXEC_FILE. However, w/o KEXEC or KEXEC_FILE, the KEXEC_CORE
code built in doesn't make any sense because no kernel loading or
switching will happen to utilize the KEXEC_CORE code.
---------------------
CONFIG_CRASH_CORE=y
CONFIG_KEXEC_CORE=y
CONFIG_CRASH_DUMP=y
---------------------
In this case, what is worse, on arch sh and arm, KEXEC relies on MMU,
while CRASH_DUMP can still be enabled when !MMU, then compiling error is
seen as the lkp test robot reported in above link.
------arch/sh/Kconfig------
config ARCH_SUPPORTS_KEXEC
def_bool MMU
config ARCH_SUPPORTS_CRASH_DUMP
def_bool BROKEN_ON_SMP
---------------------------
Changes:
===========
1, split out crash_reserve.c from crash_core.c;
2, split out vmcore_infoc. from crash_core.c;
3, move crash related codes in kexec_core.c into crash_core.c;
4, remove dependency of FA_DUMP on CRASH_DUMP;
5, clean up kdump related config items;
6, wrap up crash codes in crash related ifdefs on all 8 arch-es
which support crash dumping, except of ppc;
Achievement:
===========
With above changes, I can rearrange the config item logic as below (the right
item depends on or is selected by the left item):
PROC_KCORE -----------> VMCORE_INFO
|----------> VMCORE_INFO
FA_DUMP----|
|----------> CRASH_RESERVE
---->VMCORE_INFO
/
|---->CRASH_RESERVE
KEXEC --| /|
|--> KEXEC_CORE--> CRASH_DUMP-->/-|---->PROC_VMCORE
KEXEC_FILE --| \ |
\---->CRASH_HOTPLUG
KEXEC --|
|--> KEXEC_CORE (for kexec reboot only)
KEXEC_FILE --|
Test
========
On all 8 architectures, including x86_64, arm64, s390x, sh, arm, mips,
riscv, loongarch, I did below three cases of config item setting and
building all passed. Take configs on x86_64 as exampmle here:
(1) Both CONFIG_KEXEC and KEXEC_FILE is unset, then all kexec/kdump
items are unset automatically:
# Kexec and crash features
# CONFIG_KEXEC is not set
# CONFIG_KEXEC_FILE is not set
# end of Kexec and crash features
(2) set CONFIG_KEXEC_FILE and 'make olddefconfig':
---------------
# Kexec and crash features
CONFIG_CRASH_RESERVE=y
CONFIG_VMCORE_INFO=y
CONFIG_KEXEC_CORE=y
CONFIG_KEXEC_FILE=y
CONFIG_CRASH_DUMP=y
CONFIG_CRASH_HOTPLUG=y
CONFIG_CRASH_MAX_MEMORY_RANGES=8192
# end of Kexec and crash features
---------------
(3) unset CONFIG_CRASH_DUMP in case 2 and execute 'make olddefconfig':
------------------------
# Kexec and crash features
CONFIG_KEXEC_CORE=y
CONFIG_KEXEC_FILE=y
# end of Kexec and crash features
------------------------
Note:
For ppc, it needs investigation to make clear how to split out crash
code in arch folder. Hope Hari and Pingfan can help have a look, see if
it's doable. Now, I make it either have both kexec and crash enabled, or
disable both of them altogether.
This patch (of 14):
Both kdump and fa_dump of ppc rely on crashkernel reservation. Move the
relevant codes into separate files: crash_reserve.c,
include/linux/crash_reserve.h.
And also add config item CRASH_RESERVE to control its enabling of the
codes. And update config items which has relationship with crashkernel
reservation.
And also change ifdeffery from CONFIG_CRASH_CORE to CONFIG_CRASH_RESERVE
when those scopes are only crashkernel reservation related.
And also rename arch/XXX/include/asm/{crash_core.h => crash_reserve.h} on
arm64, x86 and risc-v because those architectures' crash_core.h is only
related to crashkernel reservation.

for the reintroduction of the UBSAN signed integer overflow sanitizer
so that we can continue to make improvements on the compiler side to
make this sanitizer a more viable future security hardening option.
Summary:
- string.h and related header cleanups (Tanzir Hasan, Andy
Shevchenko)
- VMCI memcpy() usage and struct_size() cleanups (Vasiliy Kovalev,
Harshit Mogalapalli)

For simplicity in splitting out UBSan options into separate rules,
remove CONFIG_UBSAN_SANITIZE_ALL, effectively defaulting to "y", which
is how it is generally used anyway. (There are no ":= y" cases beyond
where a specific file is enabled when a top-level ":= n" is in effect.)

arc, arm64, parisc and powerpc all have their own Kconfig symbols
in place of the common CONFIG_PAGE_SIZE_4KB symbols. Change these
so the common symbols are the ones that are actually used, while
leaving the arhcitecture specific ones as the user visible
place for configuring it, to avoid breaking user configs.

There are reports of kernels crashing due to stack overflow while
running OpenShift (Kubernetes). The primary contributor to the stack
usage seems to be openvswitch, which is used by OVN-Kubernetes (based on
OVN (Open Virtual Network)), but NFS also contributes in some stack
traces.
There may be some opportunities to reduce stack usage in the openvswitch
code, but doing so potentially require tradeoffs vs performance, and
also requires testing across architectures.
Looking at stack usage across the kernel (using -fstack-usage), shows
that ppc64le stack frames are on average 50-100% larger than the
equivalent function built for x86-64. Which is not surprising given the
minimum stack frame size is 32 bytes on ppc64le vs 16 bytes on x86-64.
So increase the default stack size to 32KB for the modern 64-bit Book3S
platforms, ie. pseries (virtualised) and powernv (bare metal). That
leaves the older systems like G5s, and the AmigaOne (pasemi) with a 16KB
stack which should be sufficient on those machines.

commit 23baf831a32c ("mm, treewide: redefine MAX_ORDER sanely") has
changed the definition of MAX_ORDER to be inclusive. This has caused
issues with code that was not yet upstream and depended on the previous
definition.
To draw attention to the altered meaning of the define, rename MAX_ORDER
to MAX_PAGE_ORDER.

The cleanup for the CONFIG_KEXEC Kconfig logic accidentally changed the
'depends on CRYPTO=y' dependency to a plain 'depends on CRYPTO', which
causes a link failure when all the crypto support is in a loadable module
and kexec_file support is built-in:
x86_64-linux-ld: vmlinux.o: in function `__x64_sys_kexec_file_load':
(.text+0x32e30a): undefined reference to `crypto_alloc_shash'
x86_64-linux-ld: (.text+0x32e58e): undefined reference to `crypto_shash_update'
x86_64-linux-ld: (.text+0x32e6ee): undefined reference to `crypto_shash_final'
Both s390 and x86 have this problem, while ppc64 and riscv have the
correct dependency already. On riscv, the dependency is only used for the
purgatory, not for the kexec_file code itself, which may be a bit
surprising as it means that with CONFIG_CRYPTO=m, it is possible to enable
KEXEC_FILE but then the purgatory code is silently left out.
Move this into the common Kconfig.kexec file in a way that is correct
everywhere, using the dependency on CRYPTO_SHA256=y only when the
purgatory code is available. This requires reversing the dependency
between ARCH_SUPPORTS_KEXEC_PURGATORY and KEXEC_FILE, but the effect
remains the same, other than making riscv behave like the other ones.
On s390, there is an additional dependency on CRYPTO_SHA256_S390, which
should technically not be required but gives better performance. Remove
this dependency here, noting that it was not present in the initial
Kconfig code but was brought in without an explanation in commit
71406883fd357 ("s390/kexec_file: Add kexec_file_load system call").

Christophe reported that the change to ARCH_FORCE_MAX_ORDER to limit the
range to 10 had broken his ability to configure hugepages:
# echo 1 > /sys/kernel/mm/hugepages/hugepages-8192kB/nr_hugepages
sh: write error: Invalid argument
Several of the powerpc defconfigs previously set the
ARCH_FORCE_MAX_ORDER value to 12, via the definition in
arch/powerpc/configs/fsl-emb-nonhw.config, used by:

mpc85xx_smp_defconfig
corenet32_smp_defconfig
corenet64_smp_defconfig

Fix it by increasing the allowed range to 12 to restore the previous
behaviour.

FTRACE_MCOUNT_USE_PATCHABLE_FUNCTION_ENTRY
We recently added support for -fpatchable-function-entry and it is
enabled by default on ppc32 (ppc64 needs gcc v13.1.0). When building the
kernel for ppc32 and also enabling CONFIG_LD_DEAD_CODE_DATA_ELIMINATION,
we see the below build error with older gcc versions:
powerpc-linux-gnu-ld: init/main.o(__patchable_function_entries): error: need linked-to section for --gc-sections
This error is thrown since __patchable_function_entries section would be
garbage collected with --gc-sections since it does not reference any
other kept sections. This has subsequently been fixed with:

using -fpatchable-function-entry to avoid this bug.
