| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is ignored (apart from emitting a warning) and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns void. Eventually after all drivers are converted, .remove_new() is renamed to .remove(). Trivially convert these drivers from always returning zero in the remove callback to the void returning variant. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The DT of_device.h and of_platform.h date back to the separate of_platform_bus_type before it as merged into the regular platform bus. As part of that merge prepping Arm DT support 13 years ago, they "temporarily" include each other. They also include platform_device.h and of.h. As a result, there's a pretty much random mix of those include files used throughout the tree. In order to detangle these headers and replace the implicit includes with struct declarations, users need to explicitly include the correct includes. Separate these from the few drivers that use ndo_do_ioctl to implement SIOCBOND, SIOCBR and SIOCWANDEV commands. This is caused by the emac hardware not knowing the forced link parameters for speed, duplex, pause, etc. This begs the question, how this was working on the original driver code, when it was necessary to set the phy_address and phy_map to 0xffffffff. This has caused a link speed mismatch issue for the AR8035 as the emac driver kept trying to connect with 10/100MBps on a 1GBit/s link. This patch also unifies shared code between emac_setup_aneg() and emac_mdio_setup_forced(). And furthermore it removes a chunk of emac_mdio_init_phy(), that was copying the same data into itself. Russell Senior provided steps to reproduce the issue: |Disconnect ethernet cable, apply power, wait until device has booted, |plug in ethernet, check for interfaces, no eth0 is listed. | |This appears to be a problem during probing of the AR8035 Phy chip. |When ethernet has no link, the phy detection fails, and eth0 is not |created. Plugging ethernet later has no effect, because there is no |interface as far as the kernel is concerned. This is because the AR8035 PHY doesn't provide the TX Clock, if the ethernet cable is not attached. This causes the reset to timeout and the PHY detection code in emac_init_phy() is unable to detect the AR8035 PHY. As a result, the emac driver bails out early and the user left with no ethernet. In order to stay compatible with existing configurations, the driver tries the current reset approach at first. Only if the first attempt timed out, it does perform one more retry with the clock temporarily switched to the internal source for just the duration of the reset. Since evidently no one has cared enough to fix this in the last 8 years, and it's very rare for drivers to register sysrq handlers (for good reason), just remove the dead code. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch adds glue-code that allows the EMAC driver to interface with the existing dt-supported PHYs in drivers/net/phy. Because currently, the emac driver maintains a small library of supported phys for in a private phy.c file located in the drivers directory. The support is limited to mostly single ethernet transceiver like the: CIS8201, BCM5248, ET1011C, Marvell 88E1111 and 88E1112, AR8035. However, routers like the Netgear WNDR4700 and Cisco Meraki MX60(W) have a 5-port switch (AR8327N) attached to the EMAC. The switch chip is supported by the qca8k mdio driver, which uses the generic phy library. Another reason is that PHYLIB also supports the BCM54610, which was used for the Western Digital My Book Live. This will now also make EMAC select PHYLIB. All callers have been audited for calls to alloc_etherdev* or ether_setup directly, which means they all have a valid dev->min_mtu and dev->max_mtu. Now eth_change_mtu prints out a netdev_warn about being deprecated, for the benefit of out-of-tree drivers that might be utilizing it. Of note, dvb_net.c actually had dev->mtu = 4096, while using eth_change_mtu, meaning that if you ever tried changing it's mtu, you couldn't set it above 1500 anymore.
